LOL, talk about a thread out of left field.

There is no best programming language, it all depends on what you're trying to do. Trade-offs and compromises are the real questions.

C with a minimal add on of specialized assembler routines(SIMD) if absolutely needed.
But it really depends on the things you're trying to accomplish.

That's like asking what's the best tool in a toolbox.
The answer is "yes".

  • A wife asks her Fortran programmer husband to go to the store;
  • The wife says, “Go to store, buy 6 apples, if they have eggs, buy 12.”
  • Fortran programmer goes to store and asks, “Do you have eggs?”
  • Store clerk says, “yes”
  • Fortran programmer says, “Then a dozen apples, please.”

Funny!

Lisp - ISO/IEC 13816
Originally specified in 1958, Lisp is the second-oldest high-level programming language in widespread use today; only Fortran is older (by one year). Like Fortran, Lisp has changed a great deal since its early days, and a number of dialects have existed over its history. Today, the most widely known general-purpose Lisp dialects are Common Lisp and Scheme.

Is the reason I nearly dropped out at Uni my first year. At 18 I could eat Pascal, Delphi, C variants for lunch, but that SHIT had me pulling my hair. There's still tons of legacy code running at finance/insurance firms. My uncle was still banging out COBOL till 2 years ago. It's mostly just your older programmers that's comfortable in COBOL. When I was still writing code for a living C# was becoming popular so we used that a lot. Or Java.

C variants you'll only use when doing hardcore engineering where you need tight control and code straight to the metal. If you're going to do fancy UI stuff where tight control don't matter as much, C# or Java. IMO
