Romney projected winner in Washington state caucusesBy Michael O'Brien and John Bailey

Mitt Romney is the projected winner of the Republican Washington state caucuses, NBC News declared Saturday evening.

Romney and the other three remaining Republican presidential candidates waged a tougher-than-expected battle for Saturday's Washington votes.

Each candidate has spent time and money in recent weeks in hopes of picking up a victory -- and political momentum -- in Washington, whose caucuses serve as a precursor to Super Tuesday, next week's slate of 10 caucuses and primaries across the country.

Results from the Washington state caucuses are updated here. With 51 percent of the votes counted, Romney garnered 38 percent; Ron Paul and Rick Santorum each had 24 percent, and Newt Gingrich, 11 percent.

The contests are expected to rehash a fight this past week between Romney and Santorum in Michigan, where Republicans handed the native Romney a narrow victory over Santorum. Reflecting the growing importance of single states' nominating contests this cycle, all four candidates have visited the state in recent weeks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In years past, Washington’s contest took place after the nomination was already by and large sewn up. In 2008, the Republican primary took place in late February after John McCain’s big night on Super Tuesday and after Romney had already dropped out of the race. This year’s attention from the press and the candidates is unusual, and underscores how difficult it's been for Republicans to draw their nominating process into an orderly conclusion.

Romney was in the state overnight Thursday and Friday morning. He raised $600,000 from supporters, and pleaded with supporters at a separate rally to show up on Saturday and participate in the caucuses.

"So I know most of you don’t know how to get to a caucus site. So if you go to Romney 'W-A' now -- you know what the 'W-A' stands for, RomneyWA.com -- it will tell you, if you put your address in, where the closest caucus site is," the former Massachusetts governor said. "Then you can show up and it won’t take a long time, it will just make a big difference. So please make sure and go to the caucus site. Get your friends to do the same thing."

Romney's hoping to build on momentum from this past Tuesday, when he easily won Arizona's primary and edged Santorum in his native Michigan.

Santorum was in Washington as recently as Thursday, and he decried the GOP's "good 'ol boys" who wish to see Romney become the nominee.

"The best chance for us to win is to not to go along with the good ‘ol boys who always want to nominate a moderate. The best chance for us to win is to create clear, sharp contrasts," Santorum said, continuing with a line of attack that almost scored him an upset win over Romney in Michigan earlier this week.

Santorum -- as well as Gingrich -- each swung through the state in mid-February around the time the state's Democratic governor signed into law new legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in the state.

“This is the first time in our history that all the candidates have come out before the caucuses,” said Kirby Wilbur, the chairman of the Washington GOP. “For a political party, it’s exciting when the candidates pay attention to you.”

Paul, the Texas representative, also spent Friday in Washington. His campaign has focused more intently on caucuses rather than primaries because caucuses tend to favor the type of enthusiastic supporter Paul enjoys. But he has not been able to win outright any of the caucuses to date.

Unlike some of the other major primaries to have taken place, though, the candidates have spent a minimal amount of money on advertising in the state. Paul's campaign has spent $48,000, and Santorum has spent $25,000.

Like most other caucuses to have taken place, no actual delegates will be formally awarded on Saturday.

Two sets of results were coming out of Washington on Saturday night. First was the results from a straw poll of caucus attendees. The straw poll is conducted at sign-in, and then caucusgoers are encouraged to remain at precincts to elect delegates to the state convention in June. That convention will actually determine the allotment of Washington's 43 delegates.

Wilbur said the late selection process could keep the state in the national spotlight if the Republican nomination fight becomes a protracted hunt for delegates.

“If we don’t have a clear winner in another month or so, I’ll think they’ll come back,” he said. “We’ve got 40 delegates at stake at our state convention in May and they’ll need those 40 delegates if it’s still a two- or three-man race going down the stretch.”

The Washington contest serves largely as a precursor, though, to Super Tuesday. In a nomination fight that may turn into a protracted battle for delegates, individual contests become more important to each candidate.

Regardless, the state party is happy to have the candidates and media focus on the state like never before.

There were many voters that sent delegate tallies to RP forums, I'll have to look into it but I think he pulled in quite a few, the problem is no cares if you font win the popular vote and that hurts him in other states.

Long read but goes to show how retarded things are.

I am not exaggerating when I say SEVERAL HUNDRED. Our entire county caucus was consolidated to a single location, our local Three Rivers Convention Center. The GOP website said they would close registration at 9:45 am SHARP. I showed up at 9:20, and the lobby was packed, the entire side hallway was packed, and the line streamed out the door into the parking lot.

At 10:00 am, someone got on the loudspeaker and told the crowd that they wanted to get everyone in and not disenfranchise anyway, and to make things easier for them, we should queue into two lines: One line for people who had their voter's registration cards, and one line for people who showed up only with I.D.

Mayhem ensued as the massive crowd attempted to shift into two lines without being rude and cutting in front of anyone. It was a confused mess.

At 10:30, someone got on the loudspeaker and told us that:

1) If you have not yet been "accredited" you will not be allowed to vote, and that voting had already begun.

2) They did not have room to accommodate everyone anyway.

They asked us to go home, and people began booing, hissing, and shouting. Then the chanting began, "We have a right to vote! We have a right to vote!"

I pressed to the front of the line, and told the volunteers up front I had a right to be there, and to at least witness the proceedings. I found my precinct number online, and found my precinct.

The voting was held in two separate chambers of the convention center- one room was filled to capacity (the smaller room). The main chamber had an entire empty section, with 6-8 or more empty tables. I took a few photos and don't know how to upload them here.
The representatives for each candidate were just beginning to come to the podium to speak, several minutes after I entered the chamber.
So they lied! 1) Voting had NOT begun. 2) There were entire precincts, some with 6-7 delegates, that were EMPTY. They didn't let the voters in!!!

There was no order: No one called point of order, no process was followed. The reps spoke their piece, we were told to vote, we voted, they collected the envelopes, and that was it!

No results were given- they told the crowd that results would be released in a couple of hours, and no one made any noise.

When I left the chamber, I noticed that the crowd in the lobby had mostly dispersed, probably because they called the police when the crowd got angry. There was a line of police out in the lobby when I came out.

Please call the Benton County GOP, the Washington State Republican Party, and the media. I called the campaign and gave them my report. I hope that the spotlight is shined on Benton County for cutting off hundreds of people who have the right to vote. Unbelievable! It should be national news!

On the positive side, I found my precinct, and was the tiebreaker! Our precinct only has one delegate, but I am proud to say that our delegate is a fellow RP supporter and that I made the difference for our precinct by not listening to the B.S. that I had to be "accredited" in order to vote. I am an American and a registered voter. That's all the accreditation I need!

Edit* I originally reported "Toyota Center" as the location- which is right next to the Three Rivers Convention Center-the actual location. I always mix them up.

Also- My timing is slightly off. I reported that they asked us to disperse at 10:30. When I talked to Michelle Dupler (local reporter who wrote the Tri City Herald article, she reported showing up at 10:23 with the crowd already leaving. It may have been closer to 10:15-10:20 when they got on the loudspeaker a second time.

Is it possible to upload photos? I have photos of the crowd in the lobby, AND of empty precinct tables!! Help!

Picture of the unbelievable crowd in the lobby:

Here's the wrap-around line down the side hall (tons of people outside, too)
