Tanning and Red Light Therapy
« on: June 18, 2016, 07:36:21 PM »
Recently, I entered into a contract with Tan Republic for ongoing tanning and red light therapy sessions. I've been accessing the red light therapy daily and tanning about twice a week. All that vitamin D is making me feel great. The red light therapy is supposed to help with pain issues caused by arthritis, etc. It is also said to help with acne, which I don't have. The cost is just under $80 a month, so it's pretty affordable.

If anyone has experience with Tan Republic and/or tanning and red light therapy, I'd appreciate knowing what you think of it.

If it helps with acne which you don't have then it means it's working.

I did some tanning there when they were under their old name, Roger want it was as it was over 15 years ago. Had friends that worked there. The tanning was fine but we didn't have that red light stuff back then. If it works and makes you feel good then great!

You're like in your late 60's or 70. Why would you risk it? I'm going to be 54 in August, live on a beach and wouldn't even think of going out without at least an SPF 30 and it's usually spf 50.

any risk of skin cancer?

I've been exposed to the sun/ultraviolet rays since I was an infant and my mom and I lived on Nantucket Island. 71 years later, I am still skin cancer free. I don't sunburn, never have. Red light therapy is actually used for folks with skin cancer. It's know as Photodynamic therapy. So I guess my answer is yes and no, depending on skin type and amount of exposure. I tan twice a week for now, but will likely cut back to once a week in the summer months.

My reasoning is that I will die of something somewhere in the next twenty years anyway. Tanning is a calculated risk worth taking, since it makes me feel better. We don't get as much sun here in Oregon as you do where you live. Vitamin D supplements only do so much. The main source of vitamin D is from the sun. Vitamin D is good for your health, both mental and physical.

Didn't red light therapy originate in Amsterdam?

I hear it works wonders.

Tanning causes skin aging.

Without a doubt.

Pasty skin is more sickly looking than tanned skin. It is a trade off.

I consider tanning sessions overly agressive. It's a 10 minute ride from my home to the beach, so it's a much more interesting option.

Portland is about 85 miles from the ocean. This is a long way to go to find out it is cloudy or raining. There are a few beaches on the Columbia and Willamette rivers....not quite the same thing as Seaside.
