Title: My lifelong battle with Alcohol.
Post by: Alex23 on December 03, 2013, 07:01:06 PM
... Alcohol wins  ;D

What's you favorite drink these days? I've been laying off the beer lately, trying to lose a chin or two  ;D.

In moderation alcohol is super beneficial. Nature's way to give us a channel to relax and open our minds. My rule has always been to never abuse so it'll never be a "problem". Why play with fire?

I dont know about whores, but the line "Never trust a man who doesn't drink" is from a 'James Crumley' novel.

The Last Good Kiss (1978)
"Son, never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

I smoked cannabis for years, gave it up for good about 18 months ago.  My lungs couldn't take it any more.  Probably a good thing, I am now 40, and it takes more work to take care of yourself.  I thought I would miss it more, but I don't.

Every month a local pub has a tap takeover featuring a variety of beers from one brand.  It's a lot of fun and I go every month.  I've had about a hundred different beers in the last year alone and the year isn't over yet.  I bring a note book with me to keep track of the beers I drink and to rate them.

I believe it was the great Bob Chick who quoted "I've never even taken a sip of alcohol"...I believe after he stated those words on the interwebz, BSN called him and asked him to promote their snake oil...

Well adjusted, happy people drink with their friends.

I prefer sparkling wine (Champagne, Cava, Prosecco) and beer. Love Erdinger wheat beer :). A single malt whiskey is ok too.

bourbon 3x a week (Mon - Wed are most stressful) usually right when I get home (wife makes me one to distress  ;D)

On weekends I usually have another after dinner with an expensive cigar.

I often switch off the bourbon to red wine especially when training hard but I have to limit to one glass WITH dinner. For some reason I noticed my gluten intolerance isn't as severe when I hit up red wine with the meal. Overall better digestion in fact even with gluten free / protein heavy meals

Same here.  Weed freaks me the fuck out.  Hate it.

Weed as a drug has a biphasic response pattern, along with reverse tolerance.

Also, it's very strain specific dude.

Biphasic means that a low dose of THC/CBD will increase serotonin improving mood, anxiety etc, high doses drop it dramatically, you then get to see what it's like to live with OCD and freak out. The problem is that until you get a good tolerance the line between good and bad is razor thin and it's all to easy to get paranoid.

I am high right now.

This. And I hate the pathetic weakness of alcoholics. Weak people that can't control themselves and destructive habits. I could drink every night of my life (if I was a drinker) and never get addicted. Or drugs every night and never get addicted. In fact, there was a time I done both during university years and never cared much for it either. I never understood the fuss.

I have learned to appraicate alcohol later in life...I used to be all work and no play, my play time was the gym. Now after marriage and kids, and work, and alot of shit that life throws at you I have come to enjoy the time I spend with a nice glass of a fine bourbon, scotch or whiskey. Some of my favorites are...

4 roses, Blantons, Macallan 12 year.

A nice inexpensive alcohol with alot of flavor is Elijah Craig 12 year.

I actually add a few drops of liquid stevia to it and I used lime flavored Italian soda water (zero calorie) from Whole Foods
If I don't add the stevia then I really need to water it down.  I still can't drink tequila or any hard alcohol by itself

I can't imagine a tequila without cointreau/triple sec

My recipe:

2 shots tequila
1 shot cointreau
3/4 shot lemon/lime juice

serve ice cold naturally

Why play with fire?

rum's been on tap lately

On a serious note, I bought a handle of Tito's vodka tonight. Made in Texas, so you know it's good.

Vodka from Texas.  Almost an oxymoron.

Looks cool :o

I'm careful about cool looking drinks.  Seems like the more time someone spent on label & bottle design and advertising, the less they spent on what's in the bottle.  Wine and spirits especially.

I miss the US microbrews tho.  I remember when Fat Tire and Red Hook were new, and they did some label design but were great beers (Red Hook got bought by Bud and went to hell overnight  :().  I guess scale of production would be the prime cautionary factor for stuff they want to make jump off the shelf with nifty design.

won't be drinking anymore, maybe once or twice a year

made me fucked up, depressed and agressive

hmmm lately after work Ive been hitting up the neighboring bars by the place I bounce(new job) at with a coworker. Gotta say it feels good to kick back a few brews and have a shot or two after a hard day of work.

Never been much of a drinker but I think I like it.

kidding... like Adam Carolla says, "I enjoy too much to abuse it and make it become a 'problem'." I think it's a smart approach:

Rules of thumb:
- Never drink alone
- Never drink while doing shit around the house
- Avoid drinking in front of the kids
- Never drink before noon  ;D

yea I gotta try it out. Apple cider usually bloats me like a cow but I read this one has higher alcohol and isn't as "bubbly".

You should try Mangria. That shit hits like a brick wall and tastes just like wine. The sneakiest drink ever. Wish I was still 17, that would be my rape drug ;D

Nothing like a good night drinking Seven and Sevens for me (Seagrams 7 and 7UP :-) although I can remember (or not so much, lol) many a good night with Vodka and OJ.

Overall alcohol seems like a poor mans go to drug when there's no opiates around...
