Title: West Palm Beach Report & Photos / Results
Post by: Lift Studios on October 07, 2006, 01:27:29 PM
After prejudging it looks like Olympia Figure runner-up Amber Littlejohn will be crowned the champ. Amber looked every bit as good here as she did last week at the Olympia. Nipping at her heels is top 6 Olympian, Gina Aliotti. Gina looks to be in second followed by Tara Scotti in third. Tara looked much better at this show then she did last week at the Olympia. It will be a nice ending to her IFBB pro career as this is the last time she will put on the clear shoes and strut her stuff on stage. I did a bit of an interview with Tara last night and more to come on that later. In 4th it looks to be Danielle Hollenshade who was able to bring things together for her best pro showing to date. I'd have Christine Wan in 5th based on the callouts but getting there isn't a walk in the park for her at this show with a few others looking to slide into that spot.

One to watch in the upcoming shows is a BEAUTIFUL and stunning woman from Brazil, Juliana Malacarne. She was a bit hard for this show but if she were to bring a similar package to the Arnold stage (and I she gets my vote for an invite) she is a contender.

Fitness:
This is Julie Palmer's show. She brought her best physique to date and was much more polished then in her earlier shows of the year. She looked better here then she did at the Olympia and I thought she looked great at the O. Julie deserves to be called out next to Fitness Champ Adela Garcia at the Arnold if she brings this same look to the stage. She's improved on her routines and wins this show without question. Second looks to go to Angie Semsch based on callout and in the top three will also be Amy Haddad. They both look great and definitely deserve to be in the top 5. My fitness stand out has to go to Julie Lohre though. Julie looks the best I have seen her, very poised on stage, great physique, looks smaller and tighter then when I saw her in Dallas. Her 45 second routine was one of the best of the day. I'd personally have her in the top three and for her I hope she gets the O qualification here as she is worthy of it from what she brought to the stage. Mindi O'Brien should round out the top five. She didn't get the top 5 callouts in the first round but should have, they moved her up into the top five callouts in the second round. Mindi brought a much softer look this show and it looks great on her. The 45 second round should go to Jane Prado, this woman has mad hops and if she could streamline her physique she'd do some damage.

The venue is small and I've heard that the competitors don't have much room to get ready back stage. Only women are allowed backstage so I haven't seen it for myself. The stage is super small and I was impressed that the women were able to pull off their 45 second routines as well as they did this morning. I sincerely hope no one gets hurt doing their routines as the stage is far too small in my opinion. I'm not sure if there is an IFBB rule or not but I would suggest it to them to implement a stage requirement for promoters. If there is and this meets it then I am suprised as it's not big enough for some of the competitors to do their routines.

West Palm Beach is beautiful and the weather is perfect. Oh and Getbig's Dina looked great, had some of the best stage presence and has the tinest waist I've seen. Her callouts were less then stellar but she still held herself with class on stage.

Tonight things start at 7 and we should be out of there by 8:30 and then it's off to the after party at Blue Martini. Should be a festive time!

Isaac

A lot of these women have strange looking delts. I don't understand why having disproportionately large shoulders is the look being rewarded in figure. Why should that represent the ideal figure physique?
Title: Re: West Palm Beach Report & Photos
Post by: 1Fast400 on October 07, 2006, 04:12:29 PM
Just don't understand how it can be that abnormally large vs the surrounding bodyparts.

Post by: Jodi on October 07, 2006, 04:19:46 PM
Lee, it's funny you asked that question.  I was just discussing that with one of my friends today of how the disproportionally large shoulders became the look to acquire when it didn't used to be that way.  I think that requirement or expectation makes it difficult for a girl who is smaller boned in the upper body or shorter.

I personally think Amber looks incredible in that photo...conditioning, proportions, etc.  She's 5'8", so the shoulders have to be large and wide to offset her lower body and the rest of her frame.

To me, figure isn't what it was supposed to be.  If you lined up all the figure/fitness girls together and put them in 2 piece suits, nobody would know the difference.  I don't think it should be that way.  It should be staggered.  Women's bb'ing the leanest, followed by fitness and then a considerable step down to figure.
Title: Re: West Palm Beach Report & Photos
Post by: Jodi on October 07, 2006, 04:54:03 PM
Actually, figure was supposed to be fitness without the routine.  Originally, the idea--or the presented idea--was to provide women who had the fitness physique but didn't have the time, inclination, or skill level to do the choreographed strength routine that tends to include many gymnastics skills.

I would have liked to have seen it treated like NABBA does...where bodybuilding is more about the size of the muscle bellies and the drier look, and the figure physique is a smaller, scaled-down version without the extra, extra dry look.

... then a considerable step down to figure.

Nah, that's 'bikini'.

Don't worry, though - you'll get to see that onstage in the not-too-distant future.  There's plenty of money to be made on bikini-body contests, so it makes sense to add that division to the current program.
Title: Re: West Palm Beach Report & Photos
Post by: 1Fast400 on October 07, 2006, 06:26:15 PM
It has to be done at some point.  There are WAY to many girls lacking the genetics to be competitive in figure.  Although they don't realize that.  This only leads to massive drug use.  I'm not 100% against drug use, but SO many of these girls have no idea what they're doing.  Following the advice of people who have no clue what they're talking about.  It's just sickening to me, seeing a very attractive woman slowly get morphed into something "less feminine".

There is a BIG difference between a bikini contest and what the figure girls should look like IMO.  Take these girls 3-4 weeks out and reward that look.    Reward something that is at least obtainable naturally.  If you don't think steroids are everywhere, look at some of the women who've made a big deal about NOT using them of late.  Notice how they just happen to be about 10lbs lighter than the other girls up there.

Can you clarify this portion of your post for me?  Are you saying the lighter girls are actually using and not telling the full story or that the lighter girls really aren't using?

By the way, it is completely possible to reach a level of conditioning and feminine muscularity without ever touching steroids, growth, or clen.  It's called time, patience, proper diet, and hardcore weight training.

I will get the score sheets and post full results later - unless my man Rick gets to it first.

Fitness they only announced the top three. I was STOKED to see Julie Lohre get third. It was very, very well deserved. She looked spot on and you could see the confidence in her on stage. She rocked the routines and her physique looked incredible. The judges got it right this show for sure! See ya at the O Julie! Angie Semsch took second and had a great routine. Julie Palmer was in high spirits and took top honors. Her physique has made great strides and her hair, make up and presentation have improved light years over the past year. Congrats JULIE!

Figure went as expected. Christine Wan tooke fifth and looked great. Danielle Hollenshade put it all together for the first time on the pro stage and looked fantastic and just missed an Olympia qualification by taking 4th. Tara Scotti went out with a bang, this was Tara's last figure show and placed third. She really streamlined her physique this year and looked great. Love ya T! Great Job! Gina Aliotti is definitely a super star in the making. She is a gorgeous girl and has a good head on her shoulders. Very bright when you speak with her and she has a long career ahead of her if she so chooses. Gina placed second to the Olympia runner up, Amber Littlejohn. Amber has an amazing physique and it was pretty clear she would take this show from day one. Her delts have always been a point of discussion but she has always had big delts even as an amateur. Amber took top honors and was a very gracious winner.

I will be photographing Amber and Gina tomorrow and both are very friendly women. Re-officially met out very own diva Dina at the Cheesecake Factory. Everyone is off to the Blue Martini to have some fun at the After party. Should be a great time. The show was small and had aroudn 250 people in attendance from my guess.

Val's routine was a bit anti-clamatic. It was interesting but didn't really flow as well as it could have. My personal favorite were the mountain climbers. I also met "johnt" at the show as well as Mike and Laura. They are an adorable couple and Mike looks like he is 25 years old. Great accent and very friendly people. All in all it was a fun show! Congrats to all the winners who have the pressure off for qualifying for next year's O!

Cheers!
Isaac

Congrats to all the top placers and thanks to Lift for a speedy, thorough report.

Fast - what you're talking about is definitely worthy of discussion and input from this forum should be instrumental in establishing the guidelines for the new division.

Bodysport.com (http://Bodysport.com) has show coverage via their blog under the "Contests" section.
Don't know how far out the placings go though...
IFBB normally releases score sheet at host hotel, but was not available this show.  They will have it up on IFBB.com Professional Division - Results section soon.

I will have full Fitness/Figure/Guest Posing galleries up early this week...

Just wanted to say CONGRATS!!! to my great friend, Christine Wan, for cracking the top five!  What made it even more sweet was that she did it at a show close to home, and her husband and adorable daughter were there to witness it.   Plus, due to the fact the promoter extended prize money out to fifth place, she picked up some cash too!  Congrats again...you deserved it!

Thanks Mavis! It was nice to not have to pack and fly for a show. I would have loved to have gone on to Cheesecake Factory and Blue Martini afterwards, but it was WAY past my daughter's bedtime and we had a neighbor's 3-year old b-day party to attend the next morning (cake & pizza!).

Congrats to everyone who competed. While it was great to close out the year with a top five placing, I was also a little bit saddened to know that it will be that last time sharing the stage with two of my closest friends, Mavis and Tara, who are both retiring their suits and heels. And Amber also, who turned pro with me in 2003 in NY. It's been a fun ride.

Now, I'm off to the grocery store....one of my favorite post-competition things to do. I find myself wandering aimlessly up and down every aisle a few times, throwing weird food items that I normally would not eat into my cart, then changing my mind and putting them back on the shelf......psycho.

Anyone have any comments on the judging of the figure show? Anyone else notice inconsistencies between the npc judging and ifbb judging when it comes to figure?
Title: Re: West Palm Beach Report & Photos / Results
Post by: Rick Lohre on October 09, 2006, 12:46:28 PM
NPC and IFBB have physiques that are at totally different levels, so yes they are judged differently.
That's not what this post is about though...I suggest you start a separate discusssion.

Also, were you there at the show?  Did YOU notice any differences?

That's one thing that bothers me about these forums, someone always want to say something about the way a show was judged, but wants someone else to make comment on it first....if YOU'VE got an opinion or viewpoint....share it....don't ask someone else to point something out then jump on the bandwagon!

What an amazing show! I am just on cloud nine so totally excited to qualify for next years O - it has been a long, hard, crazy year and I would not have changed a bit of it. Seems like everyone came into the show at personal best!

I have to say how much fun I had with the all girls backstage and sharing wine & chocolate cake with Lori, Angie & Sandra. And yes, I did lick the plate.... it was CHOCOLATE CAKE...  I am sure photos will follow soon

Issac & sunbabe - thanks for noticing the changes I have made. I feel like I am finally getting close on my physique and LOVE performing my routines!

So, now what are we going to do with a few months off????

Val's routine was a bit anti-clamatic. It was interesting but didn't really flow as well as it could have. My personal favorite were the mountain climbers.

It wasn't completely set to flow with the music (that comes in version 2.0), but to call it anti-climactic...brother, where were you sittin'??

It wasn't gaudy, it wasn't over-the-top...it was just the purest form of athletic female beauty.

I think we need to send you back to school for another course in art appreciation, my friend.

In response to Ricks post, yes I was at the show. I watched the prejudging. Dont assume I am some momo who doesnt have a clue. I had a former client who just won her pro card at the USA's compete in this show so I know what I am talking about. It is just my opinion and simply that but I think it is sad to see girls who are "too muscular" get knocked down while another girl is up there with cellulite on her ass. It is ruining the integrity of the sport. If the judges want figure to be a beauty contest hold it in conjuction with Donald Trumps Miss USA pageant. I have all the respect and credit for each and every competitor and they all looked great. My beef isnt with the competitors its with the judging. Simply stated the judging standards are too grey

Are Amber Littlejons shoulders a little bizarre to anyone else?  Something does not seem normal about that.  I have never thought shoulders could be too big but those are to me.  Kind of disturbingly big.

Figure physiques are getting really too odd to figure out any longer.  Shredded, dried out, really large body parts verses other parts. . what happened to round and full and matching from top to bottom.  Symmetry anyone?
Hardy Hard.

That's a better way of putting it...however, that being said, there is a line that some competitors cross when it comes to muscularity.  We have all seen it, the IFBB and NPC addressed it and they are sticking to it.  Remember the 20% memo.

I don't know your girl "from Adam".  I appreciate you spelling out what your issue is and I didn't mean to insinuate you were a "momo", I'm not even sure what that is? ???  I am just sick of people bitching about placings and judging...especially when they come off with very vague assumptions...

Anyhow, did your client talk to the judges after the show?

Rick - with all due respect, people absolutely should question the judging decisions whenever they see problems.

I expect the judges to do their job, but I don't always expect them to get it right.  Mistakes are inevitable, but fans should not rubber-stamp every decision just because Sandy Ranalli (or whoever) said so.  I appreciate the job that the judges do, but I wouldn't feel right giving them a free pass just because they work super hard to evaluate all these physiques each year.

Agreed, if you don't like or agree with something....talk to the judges....I just want to make sure your concerns are brought to them....and not just random rants on the boards.  Talking about what you think they are looking for is the right thing to do.

This is a great forum to discuss the sport and voice opinions.  However to say that there were women with cellulite in the top 5 Figure show that did not deserve their placing is disrespectful of these athletes and just not true.

Truthfully - and you know I like to "Keep it real" - the Figure judging at this show was one of the best I've seen.  There were 26 women in Pro Figure - count 'em 26! - on a 10'x30' stage (that's total stage area, not just 1/4 turn area, full stage size) for them to be evaluated on.  Think about it and I'll throw up a few pics too.  There was no way, and I mean no way any of the judges could have had it any tougher, judging all of these women on a stage like that!

You talk about a fun bunch, these guys are awesome!  We had so much fun!

These pics are classic.  And for any of you that think these were totally staged...the one of the cake is actually not far from reality....Julie was literally licking off the plate and when Ross caught her, it was only after getting caught that the gal's decided to "HAM" it up on camera!

Have a great Fall/Winter everyone and we can't wait to see everyone next year!  Too bad there's not a New Year Pro event...wouldn't it be fun to prep for a show over Thanksgiving and Christmas....LOL!

Hey Guys!

It was Great seeing you all this weekend.  Sorry we missed the afterparty!

We did end up out at the Cheesecake factory later, and had a fun time ourselves.
Although... I don't think we had quite as much fun as you guys did!  ( I don't recall any plate licking going on! )

Seriously though... I really want to congratulate Julie on a fantastic performance.
You looked the best you have ever looked onstage, IMO, and when you walked out for the Two Piece round I remember thinking there was NO WAY you wouldn't be qualifying for the 'O" that day.

Kendra and I have really enjoyed getting to know you guys this year, and we wish you all the best for the offseason, and for next year!

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Arnold, if not before!

- Michael

One of the things I liked about this show was that the people who had just competed at the O last week showed respect by coming to this show in top shape. They could have rode in there in less then their best and probably still placed high on what they had done the week before. True Pro's.
artielang there were some blatant things wrong in the judging this weekend. This was especially true in the second and third call outs. I guess the most obvious was the person called out first in the second round one piece ( I feel pretty sure this is what you are referring to). She looked like she had just walked out of a club and forgot to put the beer bottle down. That was shameful that she continually placed higher than girls who look like they actually work out. It was blaring in the two piece. She actually had a little beer belly and was falling out of her suit. Rick, artielang never said anything about the top five. This person did appear to be placing way higher then she should have. I think it was because she is a local and has in the past had high placement.
Dina looked stunning and should have been in the top four. Her suit, makeup and presence were meticulous. Her v taper is just amazing and her movement is so gracefull yet professional. Truly a Pro with a capitol PPP.  Mavis also got shafted and so did competitor 13. I was very happy they did not slam dunk Christine and gave her a decent placing. I was very sad to hear Tara will not be competing any more. She looked beautiful as usual. She is such a powerhouse I am sure she will take the energy that this sport takes and do great things with it.
Rick your sweetie is stunning!!!! Her routine was great and overall she was a standout. Julie did deserve to win, but fitness women better watch their backs cause your girl should be movin' up fast.

My girl #13 - Juliana Malacarne, if only she spoke better English and knew she was my girl. LOL! Watch out for her in the Scramento show.

Julie - as I told ya in WPB, that was the best I've ever seen you. You can tell when some one just has it on that given day and you had it. Enjoy the time off and hope to see ya on the Arnold stage looking just like that.

Malibu,,,thanks for the props.  I admit, I was a little surprised with my callouts...thought I presented a good package, and so did others that were in the audience, so I was a little disappointed with not placing.  But I was very happy for Chris Wan, cracking the top five, and taking home some money to boot.  I see good things for her in the future.

Thanks, Mavis - you're too kind! Right now, however, the only good things I can see in my future is the Italian food and "Chocolate Beast" cake that you will be having at your birthday party this weekend! Off-topic, but Happy 40th to you!  ;D
