Title: "Back in The Days When I Was Young..."
Post by: Parker on December 02, 2010, 12:39:39 PM
Okay, this is the "Back in The Days " Thread, where you talk about your "Back in Days", what you reminisce about, what you miss, and even what you don't miss...

I'll start, I miss recess, kickball, and home made lunches, Pacman Atari, Commodore 64, my first Nitendo (Duck Hunt, etc), lottos (shoes), BK (British Knights), Alligator shirts. No perverts kidnapping kids, and Rite Aide used to sell Playboys  ;D

"I remember way back when...back in days"

And yeah, this was inspired by Ahmad's "Back in Day"

Lotto's Boris Becker model was damned near perfect.
I miss Diadora as well.  I once had a Diadora t-shirt that said:  "Diadora:  Like Ferraris for your feet".

I miss dodgeball in PE and trying to rupture someones spleen.

I miss that weird feeling you got in your nether region when climbing the rope.....WTF was that all about?

I miss watching sports and thinking it really mattered to me.

I miss the music from back in the day....grew up on RUN-DMC, Beastie Boys and hair bands (who all blow away the shit on radio now).

I miss my BB competion days before I figured out you got to be on drugs to take it to a higher level and then finding out most of the audience are fags. A damn depressing wake up call.

I miss smoking a little bit of bud at the park and playing basketball all day in the summer. After that I would have a soccer game or something and then go to the gym and lift weights. Lots of energy a ton of endurance. I was a great athlete.

Parker, I was sponsored by K-Swiss beginning in '93.
Lots of dudes made fun of my SI-18's.  I had every color, including black with purple (my favorite at the time).  They just didn't know K-Swiss yet.
By "sponsored", I mean this:  K-Swiss would "sponsor" you if you were the #1 tennis player at your high school and had a certain Middle States tennis ranking.  You got 1/2 off first pair, 1/2 off second pair, and third pair for free.
Then came the clothing deal, where they would throw you lots of t-shirts and socks, a few warm-ups (my favorite brand was Sergio Tachinni and Fila back then).

Ive heard of that, K-Swiss sponsoring tennis players, back when they were big...
I liked Filas, but Diadoras were the first name brand shoes I had, other than Zips...

I don't miss Rustler Jeans and or fish heads...
Our basketball team was sponsored by Nike, I know that is the norm these days. And Nike invited certain players to their camps (the norm now)

Do you remember getting Eastbay catalogs in the mail and opening it up like it was a BEST catalog...

And remember Best Catalogs, and Cheryl Teague?

Parker, Eastbay was for the black kids, no offense.
I had Hollabird, which was all things tennis and running shoes.

Are you from the west coast.  Do you know who Wayne Bryan is.  I was his assistant as a kid.  I loved tennis.  It has been awhile but I hired the same coach who taught Tracy Austin to teach my daughter.  I was lucky to play with some very famous tennis players like Bjorn Borg, Vitas Geraulitis, Vijay Armitraj, my partner for a match Nels Van Patten and a few more.  I was far far far from being in their league but I could serve pretty good and had a good backhand.

On a side note how can anyone talk about their past.  It means nothing to the present :D

Keith, I am from Jersey.
You named a bunch of guys that were from the generation before I really got into tennis.  Van Patten was an interesting one, as he grew up fairly famous.  In today's world, he would be a millionaire because of a reality show and it wouldn't matter if he didn't have any talent for entertainment or tennis.   ;D
I was actually a better basketball player than tennis player, but ended up playing Div. I tennis (I was NOT a great collegiate tennis player, but good enough to play Div. I NCAA).

None taken, actually Eastbay was real big with the military, and being that we reside in Annapolis and alot of people were from Ft. Meade, many had Eastbay Catalogs...

BTW, the DC area is the biggest market for New Balances--540s

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I also miss school assemblies, where you got out of class. Also, when you thought that "your" BMX bike was the Shit!

And yeah Epic, I used to wear my overalls with one side up... And pagers were big in high school.

Even I wore my overalls with one side up my freshman year.
Like I said, I was "down", but could crossover into full prep mode at any given time.
Shit, the reason I initially got into Kool G Rap was because of the name "DJ Polo".  My boys even replaced the "DJ" with my initials and would call me "-- Polo".  I was most definitely the only white kid that routinely listened to Kool G.

Kool G has a kid with Karrine Steffans...

I remember Third Base, and giving people "The Gas Face"
and the Cuban rapper who had the song "Mentriosa", and the hip hop show that featured Dee (apparently she got beat up by Dr. Dre).

Watching the women on Soul Train in their miniskirts...
The first time I saw a Pam Grier movie...
And finding out just how big D cups really are...

I remember walking to school uphill both ways in all kinds of weather.  Pong was the only video game and we were amazed at it.  Maybe Youtube has a video of this game.  Girls all had a nice triangle bush.  Now they are all shaved.  You could drive anywhere because gas was so cheap. Anything you caught from sex could be cured with a pill or a shot.  Now sex can kill you or the disease can stay with you for life.  All girls had natural tits.  The fake ones of today look like someone put a plastic bag under the skin.  I will take real ones any day.  Moms stayed home and dads went to work.  In college many girls wore dresses or jeans with heels.  They had their hair done up.  Ever go to a college campus today?  Many of the girls are wearing dirty shoes, dirty jeans and some garbage tee shirt.  There hair looks like crap.

How far back? I remember being a 6 year old kid in Brooklyn walking around the corner with my Mom to the Italian market on a cold winter Sunday morning to get a loaf of Italian bread to go with dinner. I remember standing on the grate outside the store and smelling the aroma of the freshly baking bread coming up from the cellar. I can still smell that in my mind...  :)

Keith, I met the Bryan twins at two back to back National tennis tournaments, the Copper Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl back in 1993.
They were already getting major pub back then, and they may have been 12 years old at the time (no older than 14 for sure).
Great players.
Good ambassadors for the sport.
One lefty, one righty.  Perfect playing/practicing partners.
I don't play anymore in the least.  I like golf now, even though I sometimes suck.  I'm getting much better though.

I miss:
Walking into a "record store" anticipating the newest release from any 80's hairband on cassette.
Skipping school without any repercussions vs. calling into work now for a "sick day".
Buying magazines like Muscle and Fitness, Hustler, Circus, Hit Parader, Metal Edge.
Big Macs when they were actually big.
Going to the mall to look at pussy.
Driving a shitbox car that would run forever no matter how hard I drove it.
Playing stink finger (chicks only).
Paying for cable/satellite was actually worth the money.  Google 80's tv for more details
A time when people said please and thank you.
Anybody over the age of thirty was old.
Drinking underage was a rush.  Especially if one of your friends had the house to themselves for the weekend.
Cheap gas and even cheaper women.

I had both the He-Man and Marshal Bravestar action figures and steel lunchboxes...the action figure of Bravestar looked Asian.

Sour Patch Kids
Now n' Laters (Sour Apple)
Fruit Roll ups (you would have to clean your teeth with your fingers, because they stuck to your teeth)
Nerds (Grape/Strawberry combo)

I am now feening for some Fruit Roll Ups.

I miss the friends I had as a kid. You could beat them up and they'd still show up at your house to "call on you."

I miss the park I used to walk my dog too everyday after the gym. The same park me and friends used to throw eggs at cars from.

I miss skateboarding at the mall, and in the mall, and getting chased by security. I miss skateboarding in empty parking lots with good friends late at night, chatting about the girls you had crushes on.

I miss the lakefront I'd drive to most days in the summer and let my dog swim.

I miss the long walks to the gym from school with my buddies in high school.

I miss partying Saturday nights away, getting 2 hours of sleep, then waking up and busting a cap of G and going for a drive with the tunes pumping. That was heaven. Nothing but great feelings, the sun and good beats.

Thundercats was the shit, and saying the song... "And give me sight beyond sight"
Panthero was the shit, and it was when I got older did I see the phallic nature of Lion-O's sword getting bigger...

Silverhawks was a spinoff...

Fighting over if the voice for Cobra Commander and Starscream were the same...fighting over whether Destro was black or not...who was hotter Lady J, Scarlett or The Baroness.
Who was best, Quick Kick, Storm Shadow, or Snake Eyes.
Who was stronger Serpentor or Sgt. Slaughter

I miss my dog I had growing up.  It was like "My Dog Skip".  She waited for me in the window seat to come home from school.  You could hear her crying as I walked up the driveway.

I miss the innocence of it all.

I miss ordering pizza and cheesesteaks and staying up with my two friends watching horror movies.

I miss Little League baseball.

I miss CYO basketball and having a girl that liked you in the 6th grade come to watch every one of your games as if you were Clyde the Glide.

Laughing at the kid who bought a "My Buddy doll", and using his "My Pet Monster" handcuffs on him...
I used to buy cigarettes for my sitter, and nobody questioned you (4-6th grade)

remembering how candy cigarettes were ways in order to get you to smoke...

Playing House...Playing Doctor...
Those see-saw wooden boat thingies that you sit in, in Kindergarten.

Nap time, half day school for kindergarten. Drawing pictures was the only thing you had to do, and sing.

Supersoaker Showdown...every summer the best Supersoakers...and the inevitable wet t-shirts that may have resulted (HS and college)

Parker, in my tennis bag in the 10th grade, I hid the largest super soaker of the time.
I stored my tennis bag in my locker.
One of my best friends was at his locker at least 20 feet away rapping to this Peurto Rican hottie (she is still beautiful to this day after three kids, I see her at Church), and I just full blast him.
It looked like someone poured a bucket over his head.
Everyone laughed.
He got me a couple of days later, right in the crotch area, so it looked like I peed about 8 times in my pants.

When we went for Orchestra trips to Tenn, we would have Supersoaker battles at the hotel with other HS, one time we had launched a "pre-emptive attack" on another HS by Super Soaker water balloons up top, driving them into a full frontal attack in a mini lobby area. This hotel had a jungle motif in the center, with exotic birds...one dude had camo on his face to lay continousy "water suppression"...
Needless to say, all Supersoakers were banned and chaparones were told to check bags.

One chaparone one time saw that I bought a high powered wooden sling shot (still have it), he told me "What you should do is take some pennies and shoot the windows out of cars", I thought he was the coolest, a deviant, but cool nonetheless.

I miss meeting up with good friends and going to watch a PPV Oscar De La Hoya or Roy Jones Jr. fights at a bar and then hitting the clubs.

I miss bustin' a cap of G and just standing around the club with absolutely no worries in the world, just checking out girls and getting numbers.

My 20s were awesome. 30s suck.

I miss Friday afternoon, last period gym classes.

..having lunch time kickball and football tournaments with friends.

Public school was one of the periods of my life I would go back to if I could relive again. Coming home with no stress, just hangin with friends doing nothing and getting into trouble. Weekends would feel like 4 days. Waking up to cartoons early on saturday mornings, go hangin out at the mall and playin in the arcades. Watchin movies the rest of the day that you thought were amazing, over and over again. The endless summers..

He was a godfather, was hard with the ones around him, but had a hard life.

But most of all he had the courage to dream and enough strength to build his dream.
