Ronnie was awesome.  Some of his pics are still cartoon like even after seeing them on multiple occasions.

But 93 Yates was the most dominant, based on how the contest went.

DOMINANT ???  NO WAY ! That year you had a lot of classic physiques on stage and even Flex Wheeler in his first try taking second place almost winning the whole thing in first attempt ! at the end of the day it was more like apples and oranges ..

With Ronnie ...while he was flexing onstage you had the ENTIRE competition  backstage, watching his routine on a monitor, jaw dropped hoping they could take 2nd place.

That's how DOMINANT Ronnie was.

I mean seriously, look at that pic, that's just silly.

Levrone looks like he never trained back his entire life next to Ronnie, and Kev was one of the Top 3 Bodybuilders in the world at that time :D

The judges didn't see it that way.  Even the follow up articles we unanimous, saying Yates should have gotten 1st, 2nd, and 3rd since nobody was close to him.  He was barely called out.

All Mr.O's are great and have some crazy bodyparts. I would say if your judging by size Ronnie hands down was the best. Lb for LB I don"t know. Remember some of the guys in the 70's and early 80's were not doing HGH/Insulin protocols. They did get all Human grade AAS but that on top of insulin/HGH protocols is going to take somebodys physique to a diffrent level plus the guys in the later Era were using 4 times as much AAS plus exotics. Samir bannout had some freaky ass trcipes and just was grainy as hell so LB for lb it's a toss up.

I gotta say coming in-shape wat 300lb's with shredded ass cheeks is impressive. Dorian had a pretty thick/freaky back with crazy thick lats but he looked awful from the front a few years he won the Mr.O  , hell he won with a horribly torn bicep and other torn muscles ,dorian looked horrible from the front that year and a few others

Post by: JasonH on April 18, 2014, 07:04:08 AM
You can only compete against those that are put in front of you, therefore Dorian was the most dominant Mr Olympia.

He competed in the toughest era - Levrone, Shawn Ray, Wheeler, Nasser, Dillett, etc, were all at the peak of their careers, and he failed to lose to any of them, with a torn bicep to boot for most of the time. That's dominance.

Haney only had to compete against midgets like Gaspari and Labrada. The 80's was a poor era for bodybuilding.

Ronnie was beating older versions of the guys that Dorian beat in the twilight of their careers. And there were several Olympias he shouldn't have won - Martinez should have won one year and Levrone had him beat in another. It could also be argued that Flex should have won in 98. Plus his legacy is tarnished when he should have retired in 2005 after the 8th win. Instead his physique went to ratshit.

Arnold had to beat Oliva which was difficult but other than him there was little other competition.

I don't understand why people discredit retired or even off season bodybuilders (not picking on you anabolic alot of guys do this)You dont do it to other athletes. You know from the start its because of drugs.I'd like to see majic Johnson try to get back on a pro court, or college or high school. These guys still made exceptional achievements.Do you somehow think cause Ronnie looks like you that you can somehow look like Ronnie did.I don't get it .Bodybuilders.

It's because their bodies are a sham.  A façade.  Fake.  Artificial.  A canard.  A joke.  Not really theirs.  To be certain, natural bodybuilders lose their physiques as they age or when they stop training.

But not like the druggies.  And they don't tend to have the myriad of medical ("congenital" - HA!) problems that face idiots like Ronnie and the like.

If the Beatles never sang a note with their own voices, if they never played a single instrument either in concert or album, would any think them to be as great as they are now held?  No way.

Same with Frank Sinatra or a host of other musical greats.

These guys now have to look in the mirror of truth and live out the rest of their pathetically short lives as human versions of Shar Pei.

Not saying it wasn't an achievement, but much of his achievements were drug induced.  Sure, he had to bust his ass in the gym, but he would've NEVER looked like he did without boatloads of gear, GH, slin, diuretics, etc...

Not knocking AAS at all, just putting it into proper perspective.

He didn't have much competition. He didn't have a Levrone, Flex Wheeler, Chris Cormier, Nasser, Gunter, Ruhl, or even Shawn Ray at the tail end of his career.

All of those guys would easily have crushed Haney's competition, and I believe Cormier, Levrone, Flex would have beaten Haney.

Its who they have to beat in their era.

You are comparing different eras.  Plus Haney had it in him to step it up - the threat of Dorian meant he stepped it up for his final showing and despite the judging card he really did soundly beat Dorian.  Haney was the most dominant, hands down and doesn't get enough respect.

This is a stupid fucking statment. Whats wrong with you? pro bodybuilding... hell pro sports is all about peds and your response to it. Are you saying Ronnie never lifted a weight with his own muscles .... just silly childish statements.

You think you could win 7 tour d frances if you got on what Sir Lance Armstrong took?.. everybody is taking tons of stuff in pro sports... everybody is .

And dont compare sports which require extreme physical exertion to music.... just dont.

All bodybuilding standards of the 1980s were crushed by the very early 1990s.

You're English right, Angelito Lesta / Andrew Searle 5 or 6 years later became Dorian Yates / Ian Harrison (yes I know still late 80s...)

So the official scoring said he didn't win soundly, but he did anyway?

That's like saying you won a 4-0 ballgame by 8 runs.

Erm no, it is a subjective sport and on that day the judges subjectively favoured Dorian a little bit more than he deserved.

Yates won the muscularity round because he deserved it based on the judging criteria.

Haney squeaked by that year, then retired because he would have gotten waxed after that, and also because he wasn't willing to increase the drug use.

He went out gracefully and on top.

Cormier was damn near perfect. He was bigger, and far more symmetrical. And was conditioned. Cormier had it all, and he pretty much is the only bodybuilder one can think of where you visually keep adding muscle to him and he wouldn't look like an experiment...Shame that we never saw hi reach his true potential.
I firmly believe that Cormier's 2 2nd place finishes to Cutler at the Arnold and possibly  the
one behind Flex was politically motivated. I believe it had to do with the situation with Ahmo.

The fact still remains that Haney was extremely dominant over his competition, regardless of how his competition is viewed against that of others.  And I doubt either Levrone or Wheeler could have beaten a prime Haney.  Haney was much better than most people give him credit as being.  If the 1993 Arnold version of Flex Wheeler was arguably his best, I would suggest that a prime Haney would destroy him.

You talking crazy talk. Wheeler--the 93 Arnold, 93 O, 97 Arnold, 98 Arnold, and even the 98 O Wheeler would have beaten a prime  Haney.
Haney had great parts---chest, torso...but when you look at him, he had some glaring weaknesses...he didn't have the flow. Flex was tad weak in the chest. But, his flow was on point.

I do think that out of all of the Mr. Os aside from Sergio, if brought up to Ronnie's era, he would give Ronnie some good competition.
I actually think that if Sergio was brought to this or Ronnie's era, he would dominate.

I will say this, you put Haney in today's competition with legs, and a slightly bigger arms. He would win agains these guys.

Wheeler from '93 was 220 soaking wet (if that) and would get beat  by '91 Haney.  Flex couldn't win the Olympia, even if he were the only person in it.

216 93 Arnold, 218 Mr. O. And he came second to Dorian who looked better than he did when losing to Haney.
It's not a matter of weight with Flex, but what he looked liked. If it were weight only, then he would have gotten "crushed" by a 280-285 pound Nasser at the 97 Arnold. Where Flex weighed 224.

Haney's strengths--chest, back and his taper. Flex's strengths---full round muscles bellies, which give him the appearance of weighing more than what he did. His flow and taper. And his back detail and cross striations.

Haneys back gives them a run. Despite him not being a mass monster, he still had a lot of size. Not as big as Yates or Coleman but better proportions. Haney and 1999 Coleman are tied as best ever in my view. Haney was more dominant during his era than any bodybuilder

Yates upper body with Ronnie's lower body actually looks more complete & balanced because of Ronnie's hams/quads & glutes. While Ronnie's upper body with Yates lower body looks top heavy and too smooth from the waist down. That's why I always have Ronnie winning the RLS against Dorian. We can argue forever on who's back is better, but no one can argue over who's hams/quads & glutes are better from the back and Dorian's calves don't make up for it.

Haney did not have the same level of competition that Dorian did. There WERE some great competitors during Haney's reign, but nowhere in the same league as that of Dorian's.

Probably, but that's not Haney's fault. You can't penalize him for that,he didn't choose his competition. The important fact is that he was dominant.

Haneys back gives them a run. Despite him not being a mass monster, he still had a lot of size. Not as big as Yates or Coleman but better proportions. Haney and 1999 Coleman are tied as best ever in my view. Haney was more dominant during his era than any bodybuilder

Haney was not a mass monster?

Where do you guys get this shit?

Well it's all relevant. 250lb on stage is not a mass monsters compared to todays competitors. He was not a mass monster compared to a 300lb Coleman or Ruhl or Kovacs etc. But he was during his era.

I think Haney was the best of all time - he had mass but combined it with proportions and symmetry.

Yeah Ronnie in 1999 was as good as Haney. Haney was better overall though for his consistency throughout his career, constantly improving along the way. I thought Ronnie declined toward the end of his competitive career. Haney and Coleman top two in my opinion.

How people forget. Sergio was unopposed in 1968......clearly that makes him the most dominant Mr Olympia.

The 1968 Mr. Olympia contest was an IFBB professional bodybuilding competition held in September[citation needed] 1968 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York. It was the 4th Mr. Olympia competition held.

Sergio Oliva defended his title unopposed. Other contestants were expected to compete but all withdrew. Harold Poole received a job promotion in 1968 and it adversely affected his ability to train for the competition. Dave Draper found himself in the Hollywood spotlight, and movie making and film promotion disrupted his ability to prepare for the contest. Chuck Sipes was in attendance that evening. He won the Mr. World the same day, and had also taken time to perform strongman stunts. But, on the advice of Joe Weider, Chuck withdrew from the competition.[1]

I mean seriously, look at that pic, that's just silly.

Levrone looks like he never trained back his entire life next to Ronnie, and Kev was one of the Top 3 Bodybuilders in the world at that time :D

it's tough to have a big back if one just trains to grow INTO a show.

We saw Kai and Phil looking as big as a house all year, while jay was skinny with stupid puffy arms... he trains for 3 months and his back looks just so weak next to them.  They built THICKNESS all year.  Can't fake that with back.

Same with this Levrone/Ronnie pic... Levrone would train for 3-4 months and grow into a show.  Smart strategy - kept his health and his hair and really didn't abuse himself like so many dudes of the era.  BUT we see what the additional 8 months of heavy ass deadlifts that Ronnie was doing really translate to, on contest day.     Or, see Arnold 1980.

Arms and chest will grow into a show, everyone trains them.  But thighs and back... seems like the dudes that 'grow into' a show have a more difficult time there.

Phil looks like a swimmer most of the year, he gets dwarfed by average gymrats and girls at all the expos etc. ???

Phil is a paradigm for "growing into the show"

Arnold ended up beating him, though. Later.

This. Today Haney wouldn't place Top 3 in his weight class at the Jr Nationals.

The 80s were a joke, in the 90s BB became BB.

Not true. Consider if Haney had access to insulin and GH. Just sayin.

i will split it with u coleman from rear /yates from front ,dorian hit the front lat spread like no other and despite having arms much less than coleman by a large margin he flowed better in it ,his chest sat better and his smaller legs than ron gave more impression top/down,ronnie looked bunched up and uncomfortable in front lat esp as he got heavier/bigger..

And dont compare sports which require extreme physical exertion to music.... just dont.

This Scott fella is an epic muppet. Saw him on some other thread yapping about religion or something guys some old loser who loves willies in his butthole

You really don't think much before putting your fingers onto the keyboard do you?  You seem to treat the keyboard as though it were some sort of internet "glory hole" and you're just sooooo excited to finally have someone "pay attention" to you that you just poke your "nose" in there without a thought or care in the world.

I suppose that's the story of your sad little imitation of life.  It's only words kid, unless of course they actually mean something to you.  I would say unless they "touched" you but given your obvious lack of intellect and morals that might cause you to get unduly "excited" (see "glory hole" referenced above).

What is with simpletons like yourself, really?  "Epic muppet"?  "Yapping"?  "...willies in the butthole"?

Juvenile. I would have a talk with your father but I seriously doubt anyone has known his whereabouts in, well what year were you calved?   ;D

I have a sense of humor kid.

Pussy answer.  No style due to being of low stock.  What a wimp.  I am disappointed in you but in truth expected even less so you're ahead of yourself.  Pussy. ;D

I don't have time to get into an argument with you I'm about to have people over to start having a few drinks. You attacked my father who left school at 13 because he was so poor he had to work selling tyres driving a van around the west of Ireland. He was driving a van at that age. Got a job as a car salesman then and by 25 got the backing of a hotel owner to set up his own dealership and had it for 30 years before he got out in 2007 just before the bust. He sold the agency too making a lot of cash but went back into the car trade a few years ago out if boredom even though he's a multi millionaire. His work ethic puts me to shame. Slag me all you want but not my father who is a great man.

no, as you can clearly see here, Ronnie owned Gunter in every single pose.

even the fucking ab and thigh lol

Gunter winning was a great way to sell tickets and generate interest in that year's olympia and it worked like a charm.

however, as anyone can clearly see, Gunter was not better than ronnie that night. no tris no taper worse back arms etc.

he had some quad cuts and thats it. and a marketable face. nothing more.

anyone remember Gunter's mug plastered all over the mag sales that year? with ronnie in a tiny thumb print in the corner? I do.

Agree, and showing that pictures he's not doing Coleman a favor... Both were very close, Schlierkamp looked better conditioned, and in his best shape like at the Olympia... Coleman not at his best, with a big gut... Schlierkamp edged him out, even if fridge-like...
