I'm inclined towards trying Ubuntu just to evaluate it. But I think i'd change it to classic Gnome to get rid of that side menu thing... do you like it?

any free unix can give you desktop like icewm and web broswer n multichat like firefox or seamonkey and pidgin

so then you almost forget you not on windows surfing the net

www.archlinux.org

archlinux beats illumian openbsd freebsd netbsd debian ubuntuu fedora redhat centos etc. in these ways:
1 easy update
2 up to date pacakges/software install
3 linux so its easy to compile programs and the compiler is more up to date than other linux
4 more recent more stable less buggy code and linux kernel for better performacne and more stability

i reccomend:
icewm easy desktop liek win95
pidgin chat yahoo msn aol
seamonkey like firefox but simpler cleaner
vlc porn vids watching, hek I even use this on windows same as pidgin and seamonkey

It runs well on my old computers.  The side menu for me really doesn't make a difference.  I mainly use the big computers to operate my websites
