not so sure Arnold was in a class of his own in reference too Sergio, Sergio (in his prime) could imo more than compare with the oak, both had there strengths and both had there weaknesses in prime contest condition.

Very cool, ND. That first pic looks like the original photo. If it's not, that's an incredible colorization.

Sergio in his prime could compare to Arnold, hence the 1972 Olympia. Lou and Franco were also close but Sergio was definitely Arnold's toughest challenger.

This picture was in a book i had years ago. A friend of mine saw the picture and asked if he was holding some kind of drug testing device

Oliva was one of the most gifted bber that ever lived. Certainly superior to Arnold. But he lacked Arnold's drive and ambition.

In many ways yes, but he still had his flaws.  His biceps lacked peaks and he never managed to get totally ripped.  Too many cheeseburgers I guess.

Interesting that back in the day, about 90% of bodybuilders that faced both Arnold and Sergio claim that Sergio was better than Arnold .

Until then, Papa Joe protected him as he could.. choosing the judges who knew what to do ( 1972). And when he could not choose the judges, he preferred to withdraw Arnold from the contest ( 1971 NABBA, 1973 Mr International)

Better how, natural genetics maybe. The video and picture evidence is there,  1973 and 1974 arnold was too much for oliva.

Interesting,  Arnold has always said that his best shape/biggest legs  was 1971 (before Knee surgery) .

Sergio was beaten by Bill Pearl in a NABBA show , No Weiders involved , Sergio had fantastic symmetry & shape , he was lacking a lot. Out of the two , Arnold was more complete. Arnold had the size AND conditioning , Arnold was a master poser , Sergio absolutely sucked at posing , he never held his poses long enough and transitioned from one pose to the next very quickly , Sergio wasn't very well thought out , in his training , diet and posing.

Sergio was (and still is) a freak, a real freak..  Weren't Larry Scott and Dave D afraid to go up against him?  He was that crazy built.  Maybe so crazy that he didn't care about showmanship, he was the man who couldn't be beat.  Then comes taller charismatic Arnold.  Who lost to him the first Mr. O, but then poured it on and Sergio stayed the same?

i think Sergio defiantly had the Drive...I think his blatant arrogance (considered bye most back in the day was even worse than Arnold's) and just his attitude in general done him no favours @ all, he definitely had the physical gifts but lacked Arnold's disapline and tunnel vision leaving no stone unturned...ether way they were both incredible anyway you look @ it.

Really? Can you verify this? I followed bbing since the early 70s and though many praised Oliva as a genetic freak and more genetically gifted than Arnold I never heard anyone ever say that he was better when both was at their personal best. Arnold destroyed Sergio in the leg department, as well as chest and arms. He was also much taller, better conditioned and therefore presented a much more impressive overall package. Sergio took his gifts for granted. Didn't diet like he should have and didn't present himself well on stage with his shitty posing. Arnold took nothing for granted and mastered his posing, stage presence and every single detail that would insure victory.
