CBS-TV paid good money in advance to broadcast the Mr. Olympia for three years (1979, 80 and 81). I don't think steroid use had anything to do with the reason they didn't air it. If you listen to the Boyer Coe interview I did on BodybuildingLegendsShow. com, he says that the producer from CBS told him they couldn't air it because it was so obvious, even to someone with no bodybuilding knowledge, that Arnold didn't deserve to win. And then there was the booing when Arnold was announced the winner. ESPN was airing lots of bodybuilding competitions in the 1990's so it had nothing to do with drug use. In fact, I don't think the general public and the media really became aware of steroid use until Ben Johnson failed the drug test at the 1988 Olympics in South Korea.
If Arnold was the clear winner, why were people booing when he was announced first place? Why did CBS television refuse to air the footage and then refuse to even go to the 1981 contest (even though they willingly paid the money they were contractually bound to pay)? Why was Sixty Minutes planning to run an investigation into the 1980 Olympia and air it on their show? I agree that Arnold does look like the right winner judging by the photos and the videos from the contest. However, it's always a different story when you see the contest in person compared to photos and video. I was at the 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981 Olympias so I can give a good opinion on who deserved what in those shows because I witnessed it live. Most of us who are commenting on the 1980 Mr. Olympia were not there in person and many were not even born when the contest took place. If Arnold really was a clear cut winner, there would not have been such controversy and so many other people saying he didn't deserve to win it. It wasn't just because he wasn't at the same level from when he competed in the '70's. There must be more to it than that. Otherwise, how do you explain the booing, the non TV coverage and all this controversy almost 40 years later?

This is briliant material for the 1980 Arnold thread !

I'm assuming Dickerson, Mentzer, Coe and Zane.

You’re assuming - in your interviews you’ve never asked ?
Zane to small this time round to challenge Arnold though he easily beats
Butt Slut Dickerson He most certainly was given a Gifted Placing -
No biceps / Droppy Pecs / Pointy elbows / Monkey Face.
Zane & Mentzer Both were better than him.

Mentzer Flat Chest / Back Lacking / Great Arms / half Decent Legs

Boyer / Great Arms / Good calves / Legs ok Though shapeless
Zero Abs / Hunch Back

And they Better Than Arnold 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

1, Arnold
2, Zane / Mentzer
4, Coe / Callander
6, Tinnerino / Walker / Dickerson
Where did  T Platz Place ?

Where’s your Breakdown of who should of Placed 1st. ?

I did ask.
I don't know how I would have placed them because I wasn't there.

I agree that in many of the photos and videos, Arnold looks like the best because of his big structure and height and his massive arms, chest and back.
However, he obviously was not a "clear cut winner" because so many of the competitors complained that Arnold should not have won, the audience booed loudly at the result (and this was for Arnold, Bodybuilding's Golden Boy, the guy who everyone loved). CBS television must have thought he didn't deserve to win because after paying the huge fee to be the only television outlet that could film the contest plus the big expense for sending a camera crew half way around the world to Australia, they decided not to run the footage because it was too controversial with Arnold winning. In addition, they decided not to even cover the 1981 Mr. Olympia even though they paid the money they were contractually bound to pay. There was obviously more to the contest than the photos and video show. I heard from several people who were there that Arnold was holding water at the prejudging (reportedly from a cortisone shot he took for shoulder pain from trying to get in shape so quickly with a hard 8 weeks of training). The water retention, in addition to the weak legs, is probably the reason most of the bodybuilders said Arnold should have been 5th at best.

Dickerson was in great shape in 1980, probably the best he ever looked. He looked much better in 1980 than he did when he won it in 1982. If you never saw Dickerson in person, you really can't judge him. He was awesome when I saw him in 1979 at the Olympia and he was much better one year later. Zane was ripped but too light due to his injury. He lost a lot of muscle mass compared to '79. The bottom line is that the top competitors, despite having weak points, were in peak condition. They had trained hard all year for this one contest while Arnold only trained for 2-3 months. Like Frank Zane said after the 1980 Olympia, when you try to come back that quickly without properly training for a longer period of time, your strong points (Arnold's biceps, chest and back) come back but his weaker bodyparts (triceps, thighs, shoulders) did not look that good. In some pictures, he looks soft with some bodyparts looking weak.

As I said when talking about the 1981 Olympia, if you see pictures of Danny Padilla from that contest, you could easily come to the conclusion that Danny was the clear cut winner. However, if you were at the show (as I was), you might conclude that Danny looked fantastic because he was so incredibly ripped. However, when I watched him being compared in the prejudging to Platz, Callender, Dickerson and Franco, he sometimes kind of faded in the comparisons. He wasn't as aggressive or animated as Callender (who was extremely aggressive) or Platz. I had Danny in third despite his near physical perfection. I'm guessing the 1980 Mr. Olympia might have been similar. If you see pictures of Arnold from that contest, in comparison to the others or by himself, he looks like the winner. However, if you were at the show and you watched the prejudging from the audience, you might feel that Arnold's legs were too weak or he didn't look quite right in the mandatory poses, etc. I don't know, I wasn't there. But there was obviously lots of different opinions because we are still debating the results of the contest almost 40 years later. Are people debating Arnold's win in 1974 over Ferrigno, Franco and Zane or Ronnie's win in 1998 or 1999 or Dorian's victory in 1993 or Phil Heath's win in 2011? No, because these were all dominating wins. The 1980 Mr. Olympia wasn't a dominating win by Arnold. Many of the competitors don't feel he should have even been in the top five, at least half the audience booed loudly at the result and other top experts think Arnold should not have won.

Dickerson sucked.  Pointy elbows.  No real arms.  Curious George ears.  Stupid chest and more.  He sucked.  "He was awesome"...?

FTN.  The Grand Canyon is awesome, Dickerson was the personification of crap.  He sucked in '80.  When he won in '82 it was a travesty.  Fuck That Noise.  "If you never saw Dickerson in person, your really can't judge him".   Really?  No...Really?  I guess if you never saw an elephant turd in person, you really can't judge just how gross it is. Except to Dung Beetles.

The judges that voted Dickerson were Dung Beetles.   Fuck That Noise.

To me, Serge Nubret makes Dickerson look like a San Francisco sidewalk. And as we all know, Dickerson made gay porn.  What a pathetic butt-slut.

Arnold was the best ever.  Dickerson is a butt-slut.  Fucking man-hoe.  Disgusting creature.  But if he impressed you, fine.

I guess you know best

In this case, yes.  My thoughts on this matter  differ from your own and with good reason. Mine are  correct.  I don't begrudge you your opinion on the subject, I just loathe it because it is in favor of Dickerson.  Lest you think (or feeeeeel) otherwise, I despise your opinion on this matter, not you.

As evidenced by your pathetic attempt to rebuke my thoughts vis-à-vis your "reply",  you're in over your head.  You are also entitled to your opinion but you really should not be so smug, i.e., "I guess you know best."  The truth of those words (as unintended as you obviously meant them to be) makes me smile.   It does not  belittle my opinion on the matter in any way, shape or form.

Who knows?  We may agree on something else. But not on this.  Dickerson was pathetic and a man-hoe.  I have zero tolerance and  respect for whores, male or female.  And his physique?  It was even more disappointing than his morals.

Would Dickersons pointy elbows and other physique flaws be as problematic in your view if he didn't take it up the ass?

I'm SHOCKED!  SHOCKED that you would even presume to  ASSume otherwise.   ;D ;) ;D

Of course they would.   Dickerson's physique was awful and he had no business being on the dais.

Pictures don"t tell the story. U had to have been there. Agree....pictures don't tell the story and yes I was there....seated behind Joe Weider. Not a bad spot, eh? Prejudging I was right next to that big camera and could see the view it had. It really was weird the difference between what I saw looking at the stage v what the camera portrayed. As my training was limited to six years at that time I'm happy to admit I was no expert however even with that restriction Arnold was a major disappointment. There was no way he was...as many say judging by pictures....a clear winner. In my opinion he wasn't any sort of winner. The day after there was a seminar at a Sydney gym ...pretty sure it was Vince's Gym. A few things stand out to this day. Arnold's height. His skin tone ( weird I know but...), how unimpressive he looked, the white's of his eyes ( yep, another weird one ) and how short Franco was. John Terilli won the warm up show called The Best in Australia and looked amazing. For the record the booing was loud and prolonged. Joe Weider even turned around and asked me if I thought Arnold should have won. How bout that?

"I'm in over my head"?? Have you ever seen Dickerson compete? I'm not judging his morals or his sexual orientation, I'm just judging how he looked onstage. I saw Dickerson compete in 1979 and 1981. In '79, he was very thick and completely proportioned and symmetrical. By 1980, he was even better, more refined and polished. I didn't see any pointy elbows or any of the other faults you mentioned when I saw him compete. When Dickerson was at his peak, he looked incredible onstage. Otherwise, he never would have won as many professional contests in his career over the top pro bodybuilders of his generation as he did. I don't think he should have won the '82 Olympia (Viator and Samir were much better) but in '79 and '80, he looked fantastic.

What is your opinion of what the placings should have been?

As great as everyone was, every single one of the top five had flaws. People can dispute Arnold's win all they want but just because someone wins in a close contest, doesn't mean they shouldn't have won. "Being there" is an opinion but it's only one opinion.

There are also photos and video that tell the story, which is all available thanks to GMV's footage being all over the internet for free.

I did ask.

Nope not watched the interviews
Why would I if there whining & bitching
Especially Coe - He Never Beat Arnold in any Contest in any federation
They both competed in - so all the judges at each federation were Arnold’s friends
And biased.  ::)

No I wasn’t at the 80 Olympia either - Though I can still form an opinion as could you.
I saw Dickerson win 82  ::)  yes he looked ok - only a very flawed physique & far from
Being the best on stage that day.

As for CBS who knows why they didn’t air the show - The “controversy” of Arnold Winning
Would of done there viewer ratings the world of good.
I doubt very much they didn’t air the programme because of any favours to Arnold or Bodybuilding,
Many events are filmed never to be shown. I don’t see what the Relavance is with Arnold winning
& footage not shown.

Correct Arnold Had weak parts - Then So Did All The Others & What’s Their Excuse Then?
Arnold trained only 2-3months They Had All Year !!

Ha, no actually not new at all. Used to answer Bix guess who's many years back. Ausvet was the name . Who do I think should have won? Well personal preference plays a role of course but to me....Zane,Dickerson possibly Walker although not quite as refined as the previous. Not that it establishes any credibility but I can be seen quite clearly in one of the oft used pics of Arnold et al .

I will note Arnold showed complete disregard for the judges and seemed to do whatever pose he wanted regardless of the call. The audience actually seemed to approve so I guess he was bigger than the rules. Franco was mopping sweat off him frequently.

There is a DVD about Arnold and this Olympia; and a whole other thread here in G&O about this Olympia:

But if he impressed you, fine.

are there things

Things like Chris Dickerson?  Yes, there are things.   Outside of Columbu winning in '81, Dickerson is the most undeserving winner of the Olympia.  Ever.
