I’ve never read any of the other biographies or autobiographies, only his first. In it he wrote that when he first began his training he begin with an East German doctor and that he progressed really fast.

1- back then there was no money in it .....

2- Most top bodybuilders felt you needed it to be a Weider boy to win it . (today too ) but the contest was few years old in 71' and the top bodybuilders had a reputation higher than the mr.O ....much to lose and very little to gain ........

Not much different from today or previous years
As look at many of the repeat winners they just had to turn up to win
Other than some prize money for the top 4/5 after the winner not much
Point in any of them showing up as the winner was almost a forgone conclusion.
