Post by: Natural_O on July 22, 2017, 08:41:35 AM
Check out my interview with the legendary Roy Callender on the Bodybuilding Legends Show! Roy talks about his great career in Bodybuilding from the 1960's to the 1980's, meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger, competing in the Mr. Olympia from 1978 to 1981 and his friendships with the Golden Era bodybuilders - http://bodybuildinglegendsshow.com/video-gallery?vid=viduKeJE5

Nice work. Roy always a favourite. Good candor. But, too long! Less than an hour, please. There's a reason psych sessions are short.  :)

listen to it over a few sessions one hour isn't near enough time for a decent interview.

Always underated. He was amazing at the 1980 Olympia. Nice to know he is a humble guy.  Comes across as decent human being.

Thanks for saying that. The point of the interviews is to get a full history of their bodybuilding careers. Sometimes I make them two parts, like the one I just did with
Dorian. I decided to make Roy's just one instead of two parts.

He was a trainer at the gym I went at as a kid.
He only trained women cause he said male bodybuilders ask everybody for advice and don't follow the plans.

One day someone told him he wanted to be a bodybuilder but natural.
Roy told him: then pick up another sport

Lol

Dude had huge legs even in his late 60's

Agreed.

How did he train?

Agreed.

How did he train?

He talks about his training on the podcast. He said he stuck with the basics and he trained heavy and hard. He loved training. He hurt his lower back
training with Louie Ferrigno doing T-Bar Rows one year.

Yes, in the '80's and '90's. Then I competed in the natural organizations for about 10 years. I came back last year and competed at the NPC Tim Gardner Extravaganza and NPC Florida State.

Thank you. Please check out all my other interviews at www.BodybuildingLegendsS how.com. I'm sure you'll love the other interviews. Boyer Coe was especially good. I love interviewing these guys because I grew up reading about them just like you did. What an honor to talk to them about their careers.

Great job John! Halfway through the Haney interview. Brought back tons of great memories. But I competed in the Pittsburgh back in the 80s I got a compliment from Lee telling me I had great genetics and he invited me to his home the train but my parents didn't have money to spend on a flight or anything like that. I ended up with a nice write up in Flex magazine and they covered the show. We was a guest poser that show and for years with a belt  that he had signed. I wish I still had that belt.
I was in Florida a few years back and I trained in Tampa and I met you and said hello and you were really nice. Anyway cool interviews keep them coming

Also this is so weird so obscure but kind of funny. That little clip that you put of Lee Haney describing his injuries and how he became a bodybuilder, are used to imitate him for years when I was a teenager because of that same clip I walk around the gym  saying to my buddies " listen… This is just not for me ".  Anyway I thought it was hilarious you have that exact clip in your interview.

That's cool that Haney gave you that compliment and offered for you to train with him. What a great champion he was!  I'm glad you like the videos. I just did a good one with Dorian that will be out in August. Next time you're in Tampa, come by the new Powerhouse Gym on Hillsbourgh Ave. The one downtown closed in Feb.

Great interview John, as usual ....

Can't wait for you to finally have Franco Columbu on the show,  those 1980 and 1981 Mr.O reactions and anecdotes  (from Franco's perspective) will be epic !!!!

I would love to have Franco on the show. To this day, I believe he still thinks he fully deserved the 1981 Olympia win.
