I would have been happy with either one, but Mays filled a bigger need. Mays isn't just a combine stud. I think he led his team in tackles this past season. Players who are just combine studs don't produce in college. Mays isn't in that category. I think he'll be a very good SS.
I also like the FA signing of Leroy Vann. I never watched him play, but this kid has tremendous football speed. Could be a very good return man.
That's true. He also played with three NFL caliber lb's + dlmen rushing the passer in front of him at USC.
I have to argue that production in college does not always = good player. Look at Mcfadden, Russel and many others. It's a mix of production, smarts and physical tools - imo.
I'd have taken Gerhart over Mays. Mays is big and fast, but if you watch the db drills, he's not very impressive at all. I think Toby would have been the type of smash-mouth rb Singleterry could use all over the field.
I like the Vann move, he does look very explosive.
