Agreed, yet it does not follow that you can't reach financial independence via a decent career and your employer-sponsored retirement plan.

I never said it can't be done. It truly is difficult for entrepreneurial types to converse with the well educated employee and vice versa.

This same type of 1000 point buy up happened in 2008(link). I'm sure it's totally different now, certainly not a bear rally.  ;)

Of course I hope that the market absorbs the rate hikes and stabilizes for Trump's sake. I'm not cheering for a crash just playing around with the above post.

Understood.

Neurotoxin has just a few more days left for his latest prediction that a Dow crash is coming to 401K in 2016, or 2017, or 2018.

Why state the obvious when I already admitted to it in other posts?

The economy is great which is why it’s beyond anyone but Libs to wonder why the fed would raise rates in a thriving economy.

No need to wonder. Raising the rates in a strong economy is expected.

Why did the Fed keep rates effectively at zero under Obama if "the economy was doing well FOR YEARS under Obama"?

Why has Neurotoxin not posted anything on this thread today?

Oh, that's right:

BOOM: Stocks soar 5%, Dow adds a record-breaking 1,086 points

The S&P 500 and the Dow each clocked their biggest single-session point gains on record on Wednesday.

Mons Venus still has two trading days for his prediction to come true.  I'm sure there are a lot of people on this board who invested based on his advice, so he has a lot riding on this.

You lose nothing in a down market other than value temporarily anyway, unless you actually sell after buying high in which case you actually lose money.  Ask Primemuscle.

Tis true. Lost a couple of hundred dollars, part of which was the annual fee paid to Wells Fargo advisors. No matter what the market does, I am comfortable with my decision to sell. Investing in (gambling on) the stock market is not my thing.

Investing in the stock market doesn't have to be gambling, far from it.  You chose to, or allowed yourself to be suckered into, gambling on it.  Then you had to pay a fee to those who suckered you into it.  You are fortunate that you are not in a position where it ruined you financially.  Others are not so fortunate.

Given how little you know, and are willing to learn, about investing in the stock market, and given your incredibly low risk tolerance, you're probably better off staying away from the stock market.

Truth.

It's very simple to educate yourself but some people refuse to do it and rely on pseudo-professionals who take advantage of them.

You can't trust other people to look out for your best interests when their best interest is to take your money from your pocket and put it into their pocket.

This is the reality of human nature.  Ignore it at your peril.

"Allowed myself to be suckered into it" is an accurate statement. Taking a risk is the same as gambling. This risk was relatively small. If I'd lost the entire investment, it wouldn't have ruined me financially as it was only 4% of my net worth, none of which funds my retirement income.

Not necessarily.  By that logic you could say that getting into a vehicle to drive or ride anywhere is gambling every time, and therefore it makes you a gambler.

Also, being way too conservative with your money can be very risky too.  Your money could lose value to inflation, or a retiree could run out of money too soon if inventing too conservatively, or not investing at all.

Prime,

There are good, legit, internet banks out there that offer CDs with up to 3.50% APY right now, and savings accounts with up to  2.39% APY.

Rates haven't been this good in over a decade.  If you have a good chunk of money you won't need for a while, and you don't want a guaranteed 2% to 3% loss due to inflation, these are good low risk options.

Updated December 28, 2018

PenFed Credit Union: 3.50% APY - $1,000 Minimum Deposit with Education Certificate options

Here we are, on the final trading day of 2018, and once again no Dow crash came to 401K as Neurotoxin predicted back in 2016 and then again early this year.

Neurotoxin, if this is what you do for a living, you should find a different job.

U.S. stocks rose on the final trading day of 2018
