Title: MICHIGAN Blog - Questions and i will give answers
Post by: Doug_Steele on April 07, 2011, 09:37:24 AM
I got permission to start a MICHIGAN blog and for you have that have questions, please ask!  :)

Brady Hoke's record at Bowling State over six years was 34-38, with one conf. title in his last season. He's done well at SDSU so far, there's no doubt. If you look at the main coaching influences on him, you'd probably have to look at Michigan and his time under Carr.

Bo was 40-17-3 in six years at Miami, winning two conference titles, placing second three times, and finishing third in the conference the other year.

However, it's not just Bo's coaching record that might have recommended him to Don Canham, but who Bo played for and coached under was important. His first coach at Miami was the legendary offensive mind Sid Gillman. When Gillman left, he was replaced by Woody Hayes for Bo's senior year. When Bo was working as an assistant, he not only spent several years with Hayes but also worked for Ara Parseghian for two years at Northwestern. That's a pretty impressive list of high-achieving men who were at the top of college football in various ways that Bo worked for and learned from.

As far as Hoke being more qualified than Moeller or Carr when they took over, i am not dismissing the value of those guys having spent so long in the program that when they took over, the transitions were relatively seamless. I will grant that Moeller's first stint at Illinois was a failure, but he was hardly an overall disappointment at Michigan during a time when the conference was dramatically more competitive than it was when Bo arrived. I've never understood the vitriol directed at Carr, considering his on-field achievements. Fritz Crisler is still regarded reverently by virtually all Michigan fans, and he won a grand total of two Big Ten titles, along with his NC in 1947. Carr won or shared the conference title six times, including four in a row, won a share of a NC, coached a Heisman winner, and his name still gets dragged through the mud by people all throughout college football and elsewhere.

Here is your new strength and Conditioning coach who was with Hoke at San Diego State.  ;)

I believe that this will be a huge upgrade from Mike Barwis.  8)

Al Borges is our new Offensive Coordinator and i love his quote.

"Michigan is a special place. The walls talk to you here. You walk down the hall and you can feel it... I coached at Auburn where football was a big deal, and I loved Auburn. This is a little different."

Borges gets it. Mattison and Hoke definitely get it. As mad as I was during the Freep fiasco, and regardless of whether you agree with the merits of such a standard against newcomers, all three appear to konw what Bo meant when he said "A Michigan Man will coach Michigan."

(Note: I know that Rodriguez WANTED to be a Michigan Man, and this is not intended to debate that issue either way. I'm merely expressing my thanks that under Hoke, it's completely a non-issue.)

Junior Hemmingway out of Conway, S.C. is a special talent and if he stays healthy....big things could come.  8)

I have been impressed with Josh Furman - #6 Defense and is a Linebacker

Marvin Robinson - #3 can be a special player and is a bit raw, but can hit hard.  8)

Quinton Washington - #76 who is going back to the O-line.  8)

William Campbell - #73 who has been a utter disappointment, but Coach Mattison who has the Ravens Defensive Coordinator "Says" that he has haloti ngata talent. I guess we will see.

The special teams players are actually catching the balls on Punt Returns.  :D

I have not seen much on the Field Goal kickers but we have two on scholarship and one walk on. We went 10-22 last year and that is just sad.  >:(

Nope. That loss was just like any other loss. I did not wanna play them, but Cincinnati backed out of playing us and then Appalachian State came ready to play and played lights out. I did not think Amanti Edwards (App State) was a good athlete, but he is one of the best players that i have ever seen. It was sad to see him only be a WR for the Panthers. The only loss that ever really hurt was the loss to Colorado when they had Kordell and he threw that bomb that Ty Law failed to bat down.  >:(

Stonum is the best they got right now I think. What kind of changes do you think Brady will bring seems he has a defensive background.

Roundtree is too small needs to hit the weights. From physical stats Stonum and Hemingway should be the best tall and fast.

Who that got on defensive backs this year? They sucked last year.

Roundtree is a slot receiver and could be like Manningham if he is used properly.

They were all freshmen and had to be red-shirted to learn the schemes and bulk up, thus leaving the 2011 Michigan defense to still be pretty "ehh." So, they have to learn a new system, but we are thin at Linebacker and i mean very, very thin.  :-\ :-\

:D Check it at 1:30. Brutal

Earnest Shazor who had the best hit in that Vid was a complete nut and went nuts when Arizona drafted him.  :-\

Most brutal/least recognized hit in ALL football history. If you've played or understand physics, you can appreciate this incredible lick. Bob Stephenson (#80) expected the secondary to shove him out of bounds after a few easy yards. Instead, Daydrion Taylor (#28), 2 inches & 30 lbs his minor, put him on his BACK in mid-air. Taylor broke a bone in his neck and Stephenson would still be learning to walk a year later. Neither remember the actual hit. Neither would play again.

Chris "Machete" Graham was a brutal MOFO when he played, but never really cared about playing pro football.

Charles Woodson - Woodson covers 80% of the world and water covers the rest.

Shawn Crable was great coming out of high school and is floating around from team to team in the NFL. Shawn had crazy potential, but never really put it all together.

Woodson probably the best D back in history.

In reality, this is the question that runs through my mind as i workout, drive, walk, talk, work,..etc

Denard is going to flourish in this system. Around bowl time last season, it came out that he was actually banged up by the end of September, which means he wasn’t 100% for any of the big games against real opponents. Hopefully, next season, he stays healthy.

I’m guessing, praying, hoping, that this offense will have Denard running more to the outside, when he does run. With his speed and quickness, I never understood why he was too often used to run INTO traffic during RR’s tenure. It worked for weaker teams, but when the defenses were bigger and better, it was shut down. Denard is lethal in the open field. That’s where he should be targeted to attack. Get him one-on-one with defensive players in the open field: we know who’ll win those match-ups, and besides giving DCs heart palpitations, it minimizes the risks of him getting banged up.

One last point, why do people think “pro-style” means boring. Does New England, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Indianapolis have boring offenses?

Michigan’s past pro-style offense was boring not because it was pro-style, but because it was a BORING pro-style: it wasn’t the system, it was the conservative, boring, predictable minds running the offensive. The Pros use anything and everything that works to gain yardage and score points based on available personnel, including many concepts from the spread, so I don’t understand the anxiety that MICHIGN FANS might be returning to a boring, unimaginative, predicatable offense. Hoke’s pro-style does not, and should not, have to equal Carr’s pro-style offense.

Michigan is poised to get back to it’s past level of excellence at the top of the Big Ten and regular bowl game appearances. Hopefully, we even reach higher than that before too long.

Go Blue.

Not likely.  He is just not a durable player.  I guess he could gain some muscle weight, but what will that do to his cheap weapon?

I read the first two lines.  In my opinion, Michigan should go in another direction - Denard was Josh Groban's player and Groban's gone.  Or they can wait around and hope that Denard magically gets to the open field -- maybe he shouldn't be a qb then.

So, The Big Ten player of the year cannot adjust? Have you even seen any of the practices with Denard running the team? Have you even read anything that Denard has said about the old offense and the new one? Al Borges is bring back the West Coast offense that fits his talents. Hell, Denard ran this offense in Dearfield Beach, Florida.

Borges runs a pro-style offense, but he said it has gone through much tweaking over the years, and describes his philosophy as more of a hybrid pro-style.

He has run some aspects of the spread offense.

"To say we're a spread team, we're not that," Borges said. "But you can't say, we're going to blow up and start all over again, not when you have a talent like (Robinson).

One of my parents went to grad school at UM, so I like them.  I also follow OU pretty closely (not from OK - just a long story).  I went to a school that has been playing football for longer than most, but the program is not very good now.  Div. 1AA.  I follow them obviously but just because.

His son is a Fifth year senior who plays Strong Safety and Corner.

My outlook on Today's spring game.

Not the entire 2011 however you can see things in this game that will be challenging going forward in the least.

-Denard will never be "comfortable" in the pocket going through his reads and hold your breath on 3rd and long.

-Big Will still plays too high and can be blocked one on one-he will get better but his lack of development from the previous regieme is sad and obvious.

-Our starting FG kicker better be a true Freshman.

-We will be watching the future at Safety no matter who starts and an education is expensive.

-At this point anytime we have a Full Back on the field we are playing 10 against 11 becuase our FB made zero impact-and this changing over the summer probably not.

-Asking this coaching staff to coach up the linebacker play in one season is not likely-our LB's got sucked in more then once and once an opposing RB is past the D-Line start gripping.

Although you can improve in the off season you can take away some certainties from the spring game.

I will have more at a later time.  ;)

Yea, i watched a few spring games from various teams and i know it is four months away but they need much more practice. MICH did pull in two Big time Linebackers in the last two days and we need them this year, but they are in next years class.  8) Denard looks lost when takin snaps under center as does Devin.  :-\ Al Borges has some time to fix this and he better use every second of his time. I still did not see a RB emerge.  >:( I know some guys had a few broken bones, but that should not have limited the from playing in the spring game.

Yea RB is another weak point, Denard is the running back if goes down lights out he needs help got a couple good receivers but other than that a decent line. Will the LB's be redshirted this year?

Pretty much. See, Denard is a scrambler and he has to learn to to go through his progressions. I have been watching spring practice and he had alot to learn, so i guess we will see. Denard must learn that if he can take off, DO IT! He has to learn how to slide and avoid contact because we are thin at QB! There is a 5* QB for the 2013 class that is a in-state QB that wants to go to MICH, and Denard will be a Senior, Devin Gardner will be a Red Shirt Sophomore and Russel Bellomy could be a RS freshman or a true Sophomore.  8)

Yea Denard will get hurt bad if he keeps the pace up from last year. Other teams will take shots at him to take him out so a change is in need.

I couldn't be less down on DR.  He's proven, and I don't know that there's a single offensive player in the country I'd rather have on my team.

I'm down, way down, on taking the B10 Offensive Player 'o the year and trying to make him something he's not.

I'm even further down on the most painfully senseless football-related thing I've heard in the past few years on this board or from the U-M program:  Denard taking snaps from under center, dropping back 7 steps, and learning to be a pocket passer in a pro style system will "prepare him for the next level".

Seriously, note to Coach Borges:  you inherited a Heisman candidate at the QB position, and your only job is to prepare him for this level.  You have zero, less than zero, responsibility to prepare him for the next level.

To paraphrase from Al Pacino to Kevin Spacey in Glengarry Glen Ross:

"Your job is to help Denard, not to fuck him up.  Is that clear to you?"

In your opinion how can Denard improve?

He has to learn how to be a QB! RR just runs QB'S and basically never teaches them anything, at all. RR always had Denard in the Shotgun and that is nice, but is not what works in the Big Ten. I am more interested in seeing Mattison turn this defense around! Goin back to the 4-3 instead of that 3-3-5 which was more like a 4-2-5.  >:( "Gerg" Robinson had no clue what he was doing, but it was not his fault entirely because RR did not know how to recruit defense. It's kinda funny because RR was a walk on CB at W.V.U and could not give two shits about defense.  >:( You win Ball games with Defense and not have Wisconsin run 34 plays and 33 of them are running plays.  >:( >:( "Gerg" Robinson and RR made no adjustments.  >:(

HAHAHA "Gerg" Robinson 4-3 is best no doubt.

Yep, running a 3-3-5 was a horrible choice made by RR.

I have been posting on many MICHIGAN blogs today! Hoke, Mattison, Ferringo,..etc have been doing a hell of a job recruiting and getting top kids from OHIO. OHIO is a top state to recruit talent from! Hoke has pulled in the three top nations Line Backers! I already fucking love this guy! It does not hurt having Mattison who coached the Baltimore Ravens defense as our defensive coordinator.  8) This guy talks about "Delievering a Blow" every time you hit someone.  8) FUCK YEA!

Looks like Stonum might be kicked off the team.  >:(

RT @chengelis Michigan receiver Darryl Stonum has been indefinitely suspended from the football team per Brady Hoke
6 minutes ago

No details on what for.  Hope it's not for long.

Note:

This may go back to when he was arrested in 2008 for impaired driving.  It the past he has not  always fulfilled his probation duties per an article last year from sbnation.com:

From May 15, 2009, through June 1, 2010, according to court records, he committed probation violations such as leaving the state without consent, failing to submit to random alcohol testing nine times in a 63-day span, failing to complete additional alcohol testing and failing to report for probation on multiple occasions.

At his June 2 review, according to court documents, 15th District Court Judge Julie Creal sentenced Stonum to enter jail at 1 p.m. June 4 and be released at 7 a.m. June 7.

He is going to throw his Career away.  :-\

Well, we picked up two recruits today that we really needed.  8) Sam, well, i wished him luck because his Mom and dad are huge drug addicts and transferred to Rice, which is a great school, but he also got custody of his younger bro.  8) So, sam was a victim of having bad parents and he really wanted to stay in AA, but the Texas state law would not allow him bring his brother across state lines.

I would say (as of today, anyway) that the process worked, and not just because Hoke is off to a solid start.  Think about it.  Over the course of the process, Brandon threw a bone to every faction in the fanbase: the pro-RR. pro-Harbaugh, pro-Miles and pro-Hoke camps.

-RR was given one final chance to show what he could do, in a game in which he had a month and 15 practices to prepare for, and a healthy QB.  Many coaches don't get that final chance - their ADs often fire them in December.  If we'd won, RR might well still be our coach.  But after losing by 38 points, he was not going to be retained.  His base of support crumbled.

-Harbaugh was given a chance to take the job - at least, it appears that way.  No one can argue that we didn't accommodate his schedule.  If we'd hired Hoke in December, the Harbaugh faction would probably still be disappointed today.  They can't now, because Harbaugh turned us down.

-Les Miles seems to have received some consideration, or at least Brandon made it look that way by talking to him.  No one can say that Brandon didn't at least hear him out, unlike Martin in 2007.

-Finally, Hoke was offered the job.  Yes, he'd have taken it in December, but if so, the other three factions in the fanbase would have been upset.  Instead, we are reasonably unified right now.  Most fans I talk to are at least cautiously optimistic.  The few who aren't (most of the fans/Alumni that i know) are sticking out like a sore thumb.

Obviously rumors+allegations don't necessarily turn into verified violations, and even then, they don't necessarily turn into specific penalties, so Tressel may not be going anywhere after this year.  But there is a chance he will, at least.  If he does leave, who becomes their next coach?  Some candidates:

1. Urban Meyer.  Odds: 10-1

I think it's too early for Meyer to return to football, since he said he was going to spend time with his family.  Plus he's not going to leave retirement for a program riddled with sanctions anyways.  I just don't see this as likely, though the likelihood rises if Tressel sticks it out another year and/or OSU's penalties are light.

2. Luke Fickell.  Odds 3-1.

If Tressel does get the boot this year, they'll likely pick a very solid, unspectacular, bean-counting, squeaky-clean true believer.  Fickell is many of those things.  If Fickell is not implicated in whatever causes Tressel to hypothetically leave, he's one of the prime candidates.  If not, they'll have to look elsewhere.

3. Darrell Hazell.  Odds 5-1.

Here's another possibility.  Though he was on the program until recently, he will have been away for the Tatgate shenanigans fallout.  Has most of the upside of Fickell too.  Only problem is that he was literally just hired as Kent State's coach, and a one-and-done flight to OSU could create more attention than a hypothetically beleaguered OSU athletic department, conceivably seeking stability, wants.

4. Mark Dantonio.  Odds 20-1.

I know some OSU bloggers are suggesting Dantonio, which would be funny in some ways, and not in others.  He had no compunction leaving Cincinnati for MSU, so I doubt loyalty would be a factor.  But I just don't see him leaving a stable MSU situation for an unstable OSU one (which is what it would be, in this hypothetical scenario).

5. Someone else.  Odds 4-5.

As you can see, I think Fickell and Hazell are the most likely candidates, but both are almost certainly to be tarnished by whatever tarnishes might tarnish Tressel to the point where he goes.  So I don't give them more that a 41.67% chance of becoming the next OSU coach...unless the violations end up not being as bad as the allegations and Tressel stays on.  Then that likelihood increases.

But if, indeed, they are, then I think the chances of looking outside, perhaps for a former OSU assistant or another successful lower-division coach rises.  Who are the likely candidates?

When your team is winning, be ready to be tough, because winning can make you soft. On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing. -Bo

So you got a double dose of him O$U and then the Clemson thing never thought about that. He was a good coach and a excellent asshole.  :D

No, well, i trained with a few guys who were on that team and they saw me in a MICHIGAN shirt and asked me about #O$U.....and i just went off....but they accepted me and i got to know some of the shit that they did while they played at Clemson.

Ok, here is some stuff i typed earlier this week on Mgoblog and fill like sharing with anyone interested.

I was having a conversation today with friend/colleague Brandon Huffman, the West Region recruiting analyst for Scout, and given the fact that I'm on MGoBlog and therefore am a Michigan junkie, I decided to pick his brain about some relevant stuff.

Here are some things I thought would be of interest (this is all straight from him, and if TomVH or anyone has more detailed info, feel free to share in the comments -- I'm not a recruiting expert):

-- Michigan probably doesn't have much of a shot with Andrus Peat despite making his cutdown to 13 teams, but that's not necessarily a big deal because ...

-- Obviously Michigan is in good shape with Magnusson and Banner, and with Diamond also looking likely, the tackle position seems to be in fine shape -- we should end up with at least two highly touted tackles.

-- He feels Jordan Simmons will end up at Michigan. He said Simmons works out at a facility where he's trained by former UM guard Courtney Morgan (remember him?), and Michigan and Ohio State were both pretty high on Simmons' list ... until this week. Simmons apparently (I'm not clear if this was direct or second-hand info) is no longer considering OSU, and Michigan might now be the favorite.

-- He has a friend who was hired by Hoke and is still on the staff at San Diego State (I believe he's referring to CBs coach Tony White but am not positive), and he said Hoke is a great relationship-builder and will be a recruiting juggernaut at Michigan. With the network Hoke has built and good recruiters he's bought in, the recruiting success Michigan has had this year is not a fluke and won't necessarily go away even when local talent is down.

-- He feels Ohio State probably won't be hurt a ton right away by TresselGate because they're able to recruit so many born-and-bred Buckeyes from within Ohio, but nationally, they probably won't pull in many elite out-of-staters over the next few years (depending on eventual sanctions and coaching hire).

That's about it. My takeaway: It's amazing how everybody who has worked with/for Hoke seems to come away glowing about him like he's an old friend. And I thought the Simmons thing was particularly interesting, because I haven't heard him talked about much among the elite linemen who are likely to end up in this class.

Those who stay will be champions.

Hmmm - doesn't say the questions need to be sports-related, so

What would you say if one of our prominent homos (bay, johnnynoname) asked another poster his a/s/l and the other poster not only posted a/s/l but also a shirtless pic?

I grew up in Big 10 country but moved to the south where the SEC is king.  It was all about Da U in the early 2000s(Miami), until they fell off and interest waned.  I'm still a Big 10 fan at heart as many of my relatives graduated from Big 10 schools, primarily Illinois and Wisconsin.  My question is....what's it going to take for a Big 10 team to rise up and claim a National Championship.  The SEC is dominating college football right now.  The New Years Day Massacre had to be amongst the worst moments in B10 history.  Ohio State, easily the best of the B10 in the past 10 years, got trounced by LSU and Florida in the BCS NCG.  Last year, they survived a scare from the THIRD best team in the SEC West.  Michigan was demolished.

Should Michigan lower its standards for admittance?  Should they completely forgo the north and concentrate in Texas and the Southeast US for football recruits?  I was disappointed at their choice in a new coach.  I was hoping they'd get a group from a good SEC team.

WOW! A great question and thank you for your intrest. I am glad that you brought the January 1st demolishing, trashing, trenching, embarrassing play,...etc. Looking back i did not want Mississippi State, but that is what we got. Lemme get to Michigan first, the players had givin up on RR and i have spoke to quite a few that are now in the NFL and he was not the right choice. If i remember correctly Penn State took on Florida, correct...i am believe that is right, but anyways, Penn State had issues at QB all year long and looking back, they should have gotten beat worse, but it is what it is.

Alabama is Alabama and nothing was going to stop them that day. I remember watching that game and thinking that Alabama should have been in a better Bowl game. Alabama had better talent and coaching and it showed when they waxed Michigan State.

The SEC has very low requirements for enrollment and the biggest thing for them is OVER SIGNING and being able to let JUCO'S get into their programs.

The Big Ten has been very outspoken when it comes to this, but you have a guy like Houston Nutt who signed 43 players last year. Yea....43 players. I know the Big Ten is setting a hard cap at 25.

So, here is how over signing works...you know how you can re-take your SAT'S or ACT? Well, let's say you have the class you want when it comes to recruiting and are at full scholarship, but what's this....you have a player that just qualifies and this means that two or three players are shit out of luck. So, just imagine this...you signed with Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Florida, South Carolina,..etc...It means that you will not get to enroll because that other player who is better than you just qualified. So, how would you feel if that happened to you or your Son/Daughter? The commit might have to go the juco route or they will be released from their scholarship because "They do not have room."  ::) Nick Saban is the master at this.

I never denied that the Big 10 has been bad the last 2 years; my only complaint was that people are completely freaking out and announcing the death of the conference as a national power. OSU beat Texas and Cincy in 2006, MSU/UM has wins over decent ND teams, MSU beat Pitt in 2006 and 2007, etc. So there are at least a few more examples of decent OOC teams that the Big 10 has beaten recently.

As I mentioned in the post, consider these results with a grain of salt. Yes, there are a lot of mediocre conference wins, but that is true for most conferences. Few teams in the SEC leave the south in the OOC, and the Big 10 played about 40 more OOC games against BCS teams than that conference. But that isn't the point. I said that I think the SEC and the Big 12 have been the best two conferences over the past few years, with the ACC, Big 10, and the Pac-10 occupying that next tier. the evidence bore that out, so what's your point in arguing?

My whole point, and I am starting to wonder if people actually read the damn conclusions, is that I think the MSM and the casual fans tend to overreact, and the newest rant is that the Big 10 is a horrible conference that isn't better than the MAC, WAC, MWC, etc. This exercise was intended to provide some evidence to refute this premise, with the understanding that I tried to keep my subjectivity to a minimum. You provided some evidence that supports my admission that the Big 10 hasn't been that good the past 3 bowl seasons, and I'm not going to argue that it doesn't show a recent slide. I just want people to take a step back and consider that maybe the Big 10's recent struggles are more a bump in the road than some horrible decline.

And no, the Big Ten should not lower their academic standards.

Thanks for the great question, man.  :) If anything else, please do not hesitate to ask.  8)

GO BLUE!!  8)
