Title: What it takes to compete in bodybuilding
Post by: Howard on October 26, 2008, 11:36:07 AM
For the last 13 years I have been a gym lifter , fan and judge of bodybuilding. But from 1978 to 95 I put my body up on the contest stage, for better or worse.
To compete and I mean really go for it takes a lot more effort than most realize.
For those that are thinging about it, let me  tell you a couple things ( you may already know):

1. DIET, diet, diet is the key to getting ready. It is a lot more important than drugs or cardio and has no short cuts. If you don't have your mind ready to accept and embrace that , don't compete.

2.TIME management is a real key to being contest ready. Be ready to have some tunnel vision and be VERY consistant. Contrary to what some say, you can work a full time job/carrer and compete.
You need to adhere to a rather rigid daily routine of training, cardio and meals at the right times, etc.

The only time I felt bad about my performance in any contest is when  I failed to fully prepare and came in off and looked half assed up there. You only get back what you put in.

Good story.
Thanks and if you watch the Cutler from Jay to Z Dvd it is obvious that dealing with the day to day routine and not breaking is the real key. Many in bodybuilding pay attention to the more interesting areas of drugs, body part routines, etc. While those do matter, in my opinion it is the mundane day to day routine of deit and daily work that makes the big difference.
Any stuff to add on this?

Ok, here goes another. When I did well in any state or regional show, I had deep inner self confidence I could do well if I came in ripped and stayed the course on my training and diet. You need to have some menlte pic of how you will look come contest day to focus in on and be able to really dial in.

I think a more detailed answer to the question posed would be suitable.

If it simply takes a few dogshit paragraphs the it must be fucking well easy you slag.

Are you suggesting the average Getbiggers attention span is similar to that of a Goldfish?

LOL.
Another good tip is too accept that your poundages will drop if you really diet.
Look at Arnold in Pumping Iron he used the wts as tools to sculpt his body.
Another example of how contest prep tests your ego and belief in yourself.

I am headed out to work quads, more later, thanks for the feeedback

what's the point in competing anyway?

No question that what you say is true at the national /pro qualifier events.
However, I have done well and known many others who won/placed high on  small amounts/ no drugs at the regional and state level NPC  contests.
If nothing else getting in some local NPC Mr Podunk novice/teen or masters class is a lot cheaper and lot less stress overall. For 95% that compete this is by far the most bang for your buck in my opinion.

For me and perhaps many others it provides direction, focus and motivation for your training.
Without a firm contest date I tend to drift in and out of a good diet.
Once again, getting in a well organized local/state/regional NPC show provides for great contest experience.
National shows are a whole other ball game.
The local/state NPC events have divisions for all levels of bodybuilders/figure . This way you can get on stage and have the whole contest experience without a huge travel or "supplement " expense.
Since I was never a major threat to win a national NPC show, this was always the best option for me.
