In 2007, IFBB Pro Kris Dim, 39, came face to face with death when he suffered a tear in the inner wall of his aorta. This potentially fatal incident caused massive blood flow between the layers of the wall of the aorta. The aorta is the highest pressure spot in the body, so when there is a rupture, there is bound to be serious ramafications. Basically, when this rare occurrence happens, the person generally dies very quickly. Aortic dissection has a 80% mortality rate and more than half of the people die before they even get to the hospital. Kris Dim miraculously survived this medical emergency and even competed again after his recovery! Sadly, Kris’ medical troubles only began in 2007.
Recently, Kris went back under the knife to repair a stent. When Kris came out of surgery, his doctors told him, “Sorry, you have a spinal cord injury, and there is a chance that you will never walk again.”

I think he had an aortic aneurism the 1st time, but I don't think you get paralyzed from that, maybe with massive blood loss... ???

Dissected aortic aneurysm can be caused by many things (usually other medical problems), but most likely not squatting or anything bodybuilding related. I once saw a Mexican with a dissected aortic aneurysm. He had just polished off some breakfast tacos, and got in his van to go to work. He didn't get much further. Took an amberlamps ride to the ER, and died shortly after. :o

Yeah, I was about about to say... Didn't he have some sort of Heart Issue or something a couple of years back where he was told to give up the juice and all that shit?
Although this seems to be different... I feel for the guy and hope that it's not permanent.

This guy i worked with years ago was in good health and was sitting on the couch reading the newspaper and it happen to him. He was lucky enough to have a wife as a nurse and she knew exactly what to do and he lived. Pretty nasty surgery though.

Was the oil in the bloodstream related to the blockage that caused the stroke? I thought oil in arms could easily cause heart blockage and stroke.
Were they related? Or was this just an unrelated genetic thing?

Post-operative stroke is unfortunately a very rare potential occurence after having open heart surgery. The doctor made no 'accident'.

Dude sounds like Dim got introduced to some fuckin' dangerous ass medical doctors. The issues of his having an aortic dissection at the age of 39 years is unusual, but the likelyhood of having a double wammy with occlusion of the Artery of Adamkiewicz causing a dorsal spinal cord paraplegia courtesy of some unskilled "clown" acting as surgeon is too much!! IFFB pro Dim is now rendered completely paraplegic. There is no turning that around.
Who is this IFFB pro Dr. Victor Prisk and what exactly are his credentials in offering explanation for what happened short of looking the issue up on a computer?

Kris Dim had his life saved during his first operation. Up to third of dissection patients require operation in the future due to the progression of the disease. He increased his chances of getting re-operated by continuing same lifestyle that led to his original problem. Second operation that he got carries a huge (up to 20%) chance of paraplegia, especially when done as an emergency. I don't know all the details, but I wouldn't blame his doc so soon.

The first flex I bought had Kris Dim on the cover right when he went pro and placed 2nd in the san fran pro. I thought the dude going from 135lbs ripped to 205 ripped was amazing. synthol or not the guy did work hard back in the day. Kris has been lifting for along time! Milos took him to pro evel bodybuilding. thats when things went to shit.

Aside from the triceps and before he turned pro, I think it was around 02 he had a good physique just like any amateur before him that turned pro

If you have that many health issues, maybe it's time to just cut back on the gym, use cardio rowing to stay healthy and lean, and just relax and enjoy life.

So your definition of hard work is labor, fair enough. Well funny you mentioned roofing cause I am a roofer and have my own business. And competing is a lot more hard work then my job roofing. Way harder and it's not the training that makes it hard, actually the training is the easiest part. It's the overall discomfort involved in being calorie deficit, constantly starving and going about your daily activities sluggish and low energy, you go fucken crazy wanting to eat when your below 5% bodyfat, that's why so many people come in smooth cause they can't take the heat, that is what you call working hard but I will agree and call it hard life-style, either way getting a pro-card is damn hard

What's even worse is that due to the fact that he is indeed paralyzed from the waist down, there is a much large propensity for him to form clots in his lower limbs due to hemostasis. Those very clots can travel to the heart to give him a hefty heart attack or to his brain for another round of stroke.
I hope he has a solid blood thinner on regimen and/or a filter in place to prevent this from happening.

It's called spinal cord ischemia. Lack if flow and oxygen to the spinal cord during and right after repairing the aorta can lead to paralysis.
