Blade Trinity: Wesley was high on weed for the entire shoot

From an interview with Patton Oswalt:

(I really need to see this movie baked now)

Blade: Trinity (2004)—“Hedges”

PO: Oh, Christ. That was the third Blade movie. And there’s a scene where Blade goes in and confronts this guy for harvesting humans. That scene was supposed to be the whole basis of the film. Blade is fighting for the last shred of humanity. But they thought that it was just so fucking grim, so they decided to just have Blade fighting Dracula. It was just one of those; it was a very troubled production. Wesley [Snipes] was just fucking crazy in a hilarious way. He wouldn’t come out of his trailer, and he would smoke weed all day. Which is fine with me, because I had all these DVDs that I wanted to catch up on. We were in Vancouver, and it was always raining. I kept the door to my trailer open to smell the evening rain while I was watching a movie. Then I remember one day on the set—they let everyone pick their own clothes—there was one black actor who was also kind of a club kid. And he wore this shirt with the word “Garbage” on it in big stylish letters. It was his shirt. And Wesley came down to the set, which he only did for close-ups. Everything else was done by his stand-in. I only did one scene with him. But he comes on and goes, “There’s only one other black guy in the movie, and you make him wear a shirt that says ‘Garbage?’ You racist guy!”
And he tried to strangle the director, David Goyer. So later that night, Ron Perlman was in the city. Everyone who makes movies in Vancouver stays in the same hotel. It’s like an episode of The Love Boat. Every time the elevator stops, you’ve got a different celebrity getting on. Like, [announcer voice] “Hey, now we’ve got Danny Glover!” So we went out that night to some strip club, and we were all drinking. And there were a bunch of bikers there, so David says to them, “I’ll pay for all your drinks if you show up to set tomorrow and pretend to be my security.” Wesley freaked out and went back to his trailer. [Laughs.] And the next day, Wesley sat down with David and was like, “I think you need to quit. You’re detrimental to this movie.” And David was like, “Why don’t you quit? We’ve got all your close-ups, and we could shoot the rest with your stand-in.” And that freaked Wesley out so much that, for the rest of the production, he would only communicate with the director through Post-it notes. And he would sign each Post-it note “From Blade.” [Laughs.]

AVC: There’s a rumor that he tried to stay in character the entire shoot.

PO: Oh yeah, he did. When I met him I was like, “Hi!” And he was like, “I’m Blade.” And also, Natasha Lyonne was on that set, and she was going through some kind of mental breakdown. Wesley is all boundaries, and she has no boundaries. She played a blind computer expert. So the first scene they had together, she put her hand right on his face, and he just recoiled. It was awesome.

AVC: If you were trying to be in character all the time as a vampire killer, being high all the time might not help.

PO: A lot of the lines that Ryan Reynolds has were just a result of Wesley not being there. We would all just think of things for him to say and then cut to Wesley’s face not doing anything because that’s all we could get from him. It was kind of funny. We were like, “What are the worst jokes and puns that we can say to this guy?” And then it would just be his face going, “Mmm.” “Smiles are contagious.” It’s so, so dumb. [Laughs.] That was an example of a very troubled shoot that we made fun. You have to find a way to make it fun.

AVC: In a weird sort of way, it sounds like Wesley Snipes united the production against himself. Everyone had a common enemy.

PO: Everyone was just like, “This is going to be such a great story.” I’m in this business for two reasons: the money and the anecdotes. That’s all I want. I either want to do the best films or the fucking worst films. I don’t want to do the “eh” film.

AVC: Well, the second Blade movie is great.

PO: Yeah, the first Blade is fucking genius. That, more than anything, is what really put forth the idea of vampires as exclusive, high-tier night-clubbers who are young and beautiful forever. They took that idea done clumsily in Lost Boys and really made it amazing.

Got anymore fun stuff from the set Blaster?

Always fun to hear what goes on behind the scenes.

Another movie that was quite difficult to make (thanks to the actors combined with the director), was Island of Dr Moreau.
Apparently Val Kilmer was quite a nuisance in that one, but fully understandable considering he was notified about his wife divorce during set.

Wes might have been high, but Ryan loved Triple H on the set :D

The second Blade was far and away the best one. The darkest best story and luke goss did an awesome job. It also had Del toro directing who has had some awesome movies.

Yes, the Blade-movie when he was fighting Womack and Womack was by far the best one, surpassed Blade for sure!

x2, the effects in the original were way too cgi too. The second had a darker, grittier feel with better gore effects. 3 was an ok watch Reynolds added some good humour.

Agreed, it felt more adult like and the villan was noice, a vampire eating vampire is pretty legit. The club scene is epic. I like Del toro's work, has alot of fantasy but with an adult take, Pan's labryrinth, hellboy 2 for example, kinda like fantasy for grown up's.

So he is a completely dumb negro, who most of the time cannot string two words together and he is still hired as a main actor in a multimillion blockbuster. And they are having fun. And the studio is making profit of this.
Fuck.  :P

 ???

tyson owes the govt $30M, and is a free man.  wesley, knowingly with his accountant, filed two returns and pocketed $15M instead of paying the govt $12M owed.  They werent going to do shit on the two returns he didn't file. He just had to pay up for those.   I don't think they'd let anyone walk away from a scam like that.  Plenty of people owe them and get the non-stop threats to destroy their lives.

Ron Isley and Richard Branson tried to hide money.  Branson took 100% of non-profit money and repair his house.  He only had to give away 10% to stay out of trouble.  :-\

He was not allowed the same creative input he had during Blade 1 & 2. (And it shows)

The original script theme he signed on for was changed behind his back. He felt he was being used as the fall guy to start a Nightstalkers spin off franchise (In which he was). The original story was supposed to take place years later after Blade 2, with the humans already being enslaved by the vampires. No Dracula. It was in their best interest to listen to Wesley because the Nightstalker movie got scrapped and the Blade tv show flopped without him.

He had become friends with Goyer and starred in his film Zig Zag because he believed they had a mutual understanding about what they wanted to do for the next blade film. The studio didn't want Goyer to direct Blade Trinity because he did not have directing experience at the time.

Wesley helped get Zig Zag off the ground to help Goyer prove to the studio that he could handle himself in the directors chair. When Blade Trinity wasn't going as planned Wesley felt betrayed.

During open question, Wesley warned fans that he would not be doing any interviews to promote the film. (That's when we knew things were really getting bad). He had said something like "I promote movies that I'm in, and unfortunately I'm not in Blade Trinity". He pulled out of all public appearances, comic conventions, and promotions. I chuckle now looking back because when you watch the film it's almost like Blade is a secondary character.

Wesley is a method actor. Once tension arouse, suddenly Wesley was "difficult" to work with, even though he was method acting in the first two films.

Although yes, once things were getting rocky he only showed up to do the bare minimum requirements. There was also an incident where they claimed they "smelt" marijuana coming from his trailer.

The scene where Wesley talks down on the Nightstalkers calling them "rookies", is actually off script and how he really felt about the film. He basically badmouthed them in that scene and returned back to his trailer, refusing to do a retake of the actual lines.

The scene where Blade neglects to unchain Hannibal King, and heads directly after Dracula is also off script.

The scene where Wesley goes back for his sword and says "forgot my sword" is also off script.

Yet these are some of the best scenes in the film. Wesley obviously knew how to play the character, yet everyone continued to ignore his input.

I'm not defending Wesley's behavior or how he dealt with the situation. I just wanted to explain the REASONS behind it. These are just conversations that Wesley had with the fans. His side of the story. It's all he said she said from both sides really. Just wanted to share.

If you listen to the audio commentaries on Blade 1 & 2 its like him and Goyer are the best of friends. Goyer has nothing but positive words to say. Then play Trinity's... and it's like Goyer is talking about a totally different person. Always downing Wesley, pointing out every flaw, and every shot where "that's not Wesley that's his stunt double". 8 year friendship out the window.

---

What's funny with Blade 3 is that it actually has 3 different endings (if you count the cut Werewolf-ending shown here)
In this ending all the vampires were wiped out by the virus, and the Nightstalkers got a new enemy... Werewolves...
