Title: Bush Commutes Border Agents' Sentences
Post by: 240 is Back on January 19, 2009, 03:47:48 PM
It's about time - but they have to sit in prison for 2 more months.
AP

(Jan. 19) - In his final acts of clemency, President George W. Bush on Monday granted early prison releases to two former U.S. Border Patrol agents whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer fueled the national debate over illegal immigration.

Bush, responding to heavy pressure from Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike, commuted the prison sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. The two guards from El Paso, Texas, each were sentenced to more than 10 years for the shooting, which they tried to cover up. They will be released within two months.

Nice.

It's the AP though ( ::) :-\ :-X >:() so notice how they try and portray these men. "Heavy pressure" , "cover up" "shooting"  They try their best to keep the view of these two border agents slanted, even if for only a paragraph.

Bush kind of redeemed himself a bit. What would have been better is if he Pardoned them instead of just commuted the sentences. That way, he could have sent a message to that dumb shit state attorney general he was full of crap!

They just caught the innocent illegal aliean, Aldrete Dávila, trying to smuggle more over 800 lbs or marijuana into the state.  Seriously, we need to investigate DA Sutton and indict the SOB.  Ramos and Compean should be recognized as hero and compensate for their time in prison.

No, we know about "CHE" that's why we will keep calling him a failed "leader" and "revolutionary". He was a good tyrant and murderer though, if that counts for anything.

But his image sure makes you look so aloof and cool when it's plastered on a T-Shirt sold at Wal-Mart or Hot Topic in the interest of capitalism, ironic isn't it.

ha...... history would say otherwise.....

History says he  tried and failed miserably to begin revolutions in S.America. Castro didn't even want him anywhere near the Bay of Pigs because he was such a poor leader.

He died alone and as a failure.

And Castro might be a fuck, but he succeed in Cuba. Che has gained a mythic status because of shmoes and their t-shirts which bear his image.

Bullshit is what it is.

These two morons shot an unarmed drug transporter from behind, concealed the evidence and tried to hide the whole ordeal, lied to police and prosecutors.

They were tried and sentenced by a jury of their peers with all of the evidence presented.

Why would their sentences be commuted? Dumb ass people who think that all of their crimes mean nothing just because the guy they were abusing was a drug dealer or a sketchy individual, and just because the two men were border guards. The fact that the drug dealer is a scumbag is irrelevant. Scumbag or no Scumbag, you don't shoot unarmed people in the back, you don't conceal and destroy evidence, you don't lie to police, you don't lie to prosecutors.

You shoot unarmed suspects in the back, conceal and destroy evidence, lie to police and prosecutors...You go to jail. These two people deserve to be in jail.

You must be looking at history through a kaleidoscope. Che Guevara really wasn't much of a killer, as the only people he killed were suspected traitors. He was definitely not a poor leader, and any failures to spark revolution in S.America or Africa was due to the fact that it was bound to fail and not due to any shortcomings of him. You can't lead idiots.

they were dirty cops

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/09/04/ramos_compean/index.html

At trial in the federal courthouse in El Paso, Border Patrol agents from the Fabens station took the stand to testify against Ramos and Compean. Fellow agents, including one who had observed the shooting, contradicted Compean's story about where he was and how he was positioned when he fired his weapon. The agent who had helped Compean hide shell casings admitted it under oath. Prosecutors showed that Compean had repeatedly changed his story about the shooting and that it didn't match Ramos' account. They were also able to show that although Compean had discussed the shooting with other agents after it happened, it wasn't until his arrest that he began claiming that Aldrete-Davila had had a gun.

The prosecution's version of events was convincing enough for the jury, in March 2006, to find Ramos and Compean guilty of all but assault with intent to commit murder. Most media coverage of the case was local, and it comported with the jury's verdict: a bad shooting, a coverup and damning testimony from fellow agents that led to an uncontroversial conviction. Seven months later, a judge sentenced Ramos and Compean to 11 and 12 years in prison, respectively.

But by the time of their sentencing, the right wing had discovered the agents and begun constructing a new narrative. Ramos and Compean's newfound supporters soon settled on a radically different version of the shooting, cobbled together from speculation, rumors, misstatements of fact and various unproven assertions cherry-picked from the case the defense presented at trial.

I think drugs should be legalized anyway. As far as they knew, they shot a guy for transporting a few hundred pounds of a plant that people smoke to change their feelings. If you look at it for what it is, you'll see how they were wrong. We waste billions in this country putting people in prison for a plant that they smoke while at the same time other more dangerous plants (tobacco for instance) are legal.

Also, they DESTROYED EVIDENCE, LIED TO THE POLICE, LIED TO PROSECUTORS. If these were 2 innocent people then why did they do all they could to hide what they did?

Would you feel the same way if he was transporting Alcohol or Tobacco? Both substances are much more dangerous than Marijuana. Why is someone transporting Marijuana necessary a scumbag?

the problem is who gets to decide who's a scumbag?  we already have a system in place to do that, trial by jury. and even though juries can make mistakes, we have a system in place to correct that, the appeal process.  two police officers don't have the authority to make such decisions, mainly because if they're wrong there is no way to undo their actions.

The war on drugs is one of the biggest farces of the 20th and 21th century. It's a joke, and far too many mental midgets like to go by what they are told by propaganda and believe that "drugs are bad" or "Just say no" while at the same time actually using illegal drugs or using legal drugs that are just as bad or worse.

A marijuana transporter? Shoot him in the back and destroy the evidence!!!

Why does the fact that the plant is smoked and makes people feel different have any relevance?

Moreover, 2 wrongs don't make a right. Didn't you learn this as a child? If I commit several crimes to stop a crime, I belong in jail also. That is how our society continues to exist. There is a reason why what they did was illegal, and why they were put in jail.

The guy would have been jailed anyway. These 2 jackasses are so fucking stupid that their actions actually ensured that the drug dealer got away.

Yes, I would be saying it if he was transporting Dandelions. He is coming here illegally. Maybe shooting a few on the border will make the rest of them think twice about crossing the border.

You'd agree with someone being shot in the back for crossing the border to import dandelions?

You're a nutjob.

I'll take that as a compliment. You don't understand that most of the people coming over the border are stopping you from getting a job at McDonald's!

First of all, I never see Mexicans working at McDonalds. Mostly blacks.

Second of all, If the worse thing that illegals are doing is preventing me from working at McDonalds, then I see no problem with them being here at all!

They will be released within two months.

supposedly out now. its about fucking time!!!
