Title: Is this shit worth it????????????
Post by: The Squadfather on February 21, 2007, 07:26:10 AM
do any of you guys ever get tired of your knees, back, shoulders, elbows, wrists hurting on a daily basis, not being able to bend over and pick things up off the floor 90 percent of the time, i'm not feeling well today but it just got me thinking about all this pain i deal with on a daily basis, nothing really severe just annoying shit, i wish i could be satisfied with being skinny/fat like the average american guy but the thought of it scares me to death, what about you guys? just to let you know, i'm not responding to jokes and flames and bullshit so don't waste your time responding, you won't get a response.

I always liked the saying "Pain lets you know you're still alive".

Fuck all that other shit, it's peripheral to what your goals are. Working out hard, being sore the next day is just a satisfying way of knowing that your workout actually DID something.

I get pains in my wrists sometimes when pressing, but it doesn't last. Whatever, I don't let it run the way I want to train.

Maybe you should take some time off from training and the typical bodybuilding diet. Its not like you can't regain any muscle you may lose once you get back into it.

no man i'm not talking about the soreness, i love muscle soreness, i'm talking about waking up at 2-3 in the morning with your back, knees and shoulders hurting, waking up with pain, etc., i see normal dudes out at places and they move so easily and pain free without a care in the world about being either skinny, fat or skinny/fat and i wish i could be like that.

Hmm, maybe you should see a doctor then. Waking up from pain isn't normal. That's the best advice I can give.

Well, I suggest you look up some old high school buddies of yours. Look at them, and then look at yourself.

truthfully? i'm glad i switched to PL for that reason. i never get sore any more, since i'm never doing sets that cause that kind of a deep burn. my joints ache sometimes but even after a mammoth squat day i'm fine to jog the next morning.

Sometimes being sore and in pain makes me realize that I am actually training and progressing with my regimen. Yeah it sucks if say the day after blasting legs you need to carry the vaccum cleaner up a flight of stairs, or stand in line at the airport....but i guess thats the price you pay. The only thing in life that comes easy is death, cause life is hard.

I guess thats why i go for the 'pump' and leave my ego at the door. For instance, dumbell shoulder presses have be said to wear and tear at your rotator cuff. So I dont do them. Also free standing squats, the all time best leg exercise.....not for me, i get a better pump and range of motion through smith machine. I rather play for the long term than the short.

dont give up.  there is a difference from being sore and being hurt.  lifting weights is the only thing that kept me sane after i got back from iraq.  i had something positive to focus on and could see changes and meet goals.  that may sound silly, but its true.  my gym time each day is my favorite part of the day.  even if im the only one there, i have the best time ever.  while i never lift to impress people or shock people, i am pretty impressed with myself each time i move heavier weight, build endurance and the best part is when i see changes in the mirror.
if your hurt, see a doctor.
also, what hedgehog wrote should be on walls in gyms throughout america.   ;D

It's the reason I don't do exercises like bench, upright rows, straight  bar curls. etc, and mix more high rep and core type work.  Once you pass 30, you have to re-evaluate what your goals are.  Do I miss moving some of the weights I used to?  Of course, but I don't miss the sharp, unexpected shoulder pain and wrist pain.

Muscle pain is great, the joint stuff is for shit.  It will only get worse as you get older, unless you change your habits.

You can still be strong and in shape, you just have to use different ways to get there.

I hope it's worth it. One way to find out.

I don't get sore when I bend down, so it's good on that front, but I'm skinny as fuck and I'll be damned if my ego has to take being this size any longer!

the only type of training i've ever gotten results from is training very heavy for sets of 6-8, sometimes 10.

Hey Squad, try taking Glucosamine Sulphate. It is supposed to heel joint pain. I use it on a regular basis when I train heavy and I never get any tweaks or inflammation in my joints. You can buy it at any health food store for about 20 bucks for 360 caplets. Its worth it...trust me. I take 3 caplets daily at a 190lb bodyweight and its sufficiant enough for me. Give it a go.

there are alternatives that are just as effective as squats / deadlifts / bench press for building muscle that won't cause you joint soreness.  PM if you'd like to learn more.

dude gimme a fuckin' break ::) you're what, 24? i have a little more than a decade on you, i've done literally EVERYTHING in th gym, high reps, low reps, heavy weight, light weight, weird exercises, isolation movements, supersets, drop sets, etc., the whole thing, i'm 236 pounds, why would i take advice from someone 80 pounds lighter than me?

I suppose it's just the price you pay to look that way.  Joint pain and stuff like that can be reduced though, there's no need to live through it.  Glucosamine can work, also natural oil supplements, stretching, massage.  You've been doing this for a long time though so I'm probably just telling you stuff you already know.

You can always learn something new, bro. And never assume just because someone is younger than you that they have nothing to teach you.

I have been lifting weights for 20+ years, and I'm relatively pain free. You shouldn't be walking around like a wounded war veteran from lifting. You need to reevaluate your training methods. If you're in your mid-30's and having joint pain, it's only going to get worse as you get older.

i get that feeling of having little pains here and there and squad is right they are annoying. usually when i keep my sets low and go heavy 6 to 10 reps im ok for the most part, but like the other day i changed it up a bit and did giant sets for arms i picked 4 different exercises and of 4 rotations, and what the fuck when i got home my arm was all fucked up and cramped up.almost felt like i pulled something. hurt like hell. still a week later and its still kinda of bothering me. cant wait till it goes away cuz i wanna train arms again...lol

I'm about 210 right now

Well, if you are attempting to "move mountains" at all costs and using shitty form then I guess you have to live with joint pain. I would rather leave my ego at the door and train hard but sensibly. I lift heavy for ME, but I ain't looking to set any records. I could care less what others lift, honestly. Most of the stronger guys in the gym don't have impressive physiques.

I tend to mix it up...training in the 4-6 rep range for several weeks and then switching to 12-15 reps. I went through a period where my knees bothered me when I'd squat, but that's gone away now. I feel great.

If you spent more time lifting with better form and not pwn'ing 7 year olds at your gym you wouldn't have this pain.

People that only know the basics of training tend to end up with pain in the joints
juicing is not helping either.

I know many big guys with pain in their joints.
Getting big is easy.

Looking big, lean, symmetical, and beeing pain free is hard for the average gym rat.

Honestly I think about this quite a bit and have came to the conclusion that no, it's not really worth it, I am in constant pain when I train, especially in my knees and shoulder and my biggest regret (and don't laugh) is gaining more muscle than I really need, now at almost 45 I am actually trying to lose some muscle, if I would have known way back when what I know now I would have done things much differently. The only exercise that I go heavy on is box squats and even that will change but on my second leg day it only consists of going to the track and pulling a sled.

Oh yeah, one other thing, once you turn a certain age and realize you can't train like you used to, it's time to re-evaluate your goals, unless you plan on making a living thru bodybuilding, it's not worth it and time to change training protocol!

do any of you guys ever get tired of your knees, back, shoulders, elbows, wrists hurting on a daily basis, not being able to bend over and pick things up off the floor 90 percent of the time, i'm not feeling well today but it just got me thinking about all this pain i deal with on a daily basis, nothing really severe just annoying shit, i wish i could be satisfied with being skinny/fat like the average american guy but the thought of it scares me to death, what about you guys? just to let you know, i'm not responding to jokes and flames and bullshit so don't waste your time responding, you won't get a response.

Jesus man. Knock the fucking sand out of it and get back in the game. Pussy!!!! J/K...I know where you're coming from. Wrists and shoulders especially take a beating. It's almost like you feel 30 years older than you really are some days just from trying to pick stuff up off the floor or walking up stairs after heavy lifting. It's just part of it. I believe they make extra strength vagisil though, just incase you have another flare up. ;)

Yes! this is more than just bothersome for those us over 30.  Its actually kind of depressing, I never get a pain free day anymore.  Im not liking my current pain cocktail of celebrex and deca which eases the pain somewhat.  Mentally I wish I could be satisfied @ 180 skinny fat man, but I cant.  Oh well.

Yeah, I'm sick and tired of the pain.   The normal soreness is no big thing, but the aching, creaking, popping joints get old.  I've never been competitive (although I lived and breathed that lifestyle in my early 20s) so now I don't feel the need to go to extremes in my 30s (2-a-days, rigid diet, harsh cardio regimen)....there has to be a happy middle in which we train hard, diet smart but not to the point in which we're literally tearing up our bodies and living in constant pain.   I know for some this is hard to imagine, but there is life outside of the gym; plus once you've established a good foundation you don't have bustass to keep it.

I don't carry a whole lot of fat, besides it doesn't matter if whether you carry 250lbs of fat or 250lbs of muscle, if you have been lifting heavy all your life it's going to take it's toll!

I agree. I say it all the time my worst fear in life is 'looking ordinary'. It's a mind-fuck that one day I know I will have to accept but I aint ready now. I dont understand HOW a man...any person DOESNT want overblown thighs and arms and BACK etc...

I look at people and shake my head and wonder if their life is significant. I wonder and TRY to remember the time when I ate whatever I wanted all the time and the thought of building and KEEPING my muscules in a positive nitrogen balance never ever crossed my imagination.

I hate getting IN and OUT of cars. Everytime I do and even do something like tie my shoes or pick up something I dropped on the floor I let out a course of...'Ooh...ow...ooohh...ahhh. ..' like I'm an old man.

I sometimes have to remind myself the same thing. Is it worth it?

I'll also answer this seriously. You raise a very valid point. I too have a whole lot of niggling aches and pains from a lot of my joints, muscles and what not, which is probably from lifting heavy (for me) all the time. It's funny how you feel nearly crippled at the end of your workout, not to mention being inhumanly exhausted (at least for me, who does high volume) and a day or two later, just as you're near fully recovered from the last workout, go to the gym to put yourself through it all over again.

I think it's basically a special sense of living - kinda like the masochistic soldier who laughs off some nasty wound he sustained in some battle, cause the fact that he willingly and consciously put himself through all that pain gives him pride and a sense of accomplishment. Training 'hardcore' isn't everyone's cup of Tea - I always tell most people who ask me why I train so intensely that I'm bodybuilding, as opposed to their exercising (which is what the majority do), which are in a way, 2 different things, like racing and driving a car from home to work. For those of us who've tasted and learned to like that way of training / 'lifestyle' (I use the term loosely here), I don't think there's any turning back. You can tell that we're feral, just from the way a lot of the tiny tits / metrosexuals stare at us helplessly while we're bending the bar from lifting something so heavy, that our veins stick out and our face goes beet red.

In short, Sarcasm, you're distancing yourself from mediocrity with every single time you visit the gym, which makes you feel alive, like a real man, gives you a feeling of accomplishment, makes you glad you're alive, healthy and strong and gives you a satisfaction that nothing else can, in that way. Socrates once said that 'It's a shame for a man to grow old, without seeing the beauty and strength his body is capable of'. That's what you're proving and you know damn well that the niggling pains are just a small price to pay for the feeling lifting gives us all 8)

I can remember calling in sick to work because I couldn't walk the next day after training calves for the first time.  Good times!

As you get older you have to know your limitations and listen to your body better.  I tore a ligement in my shoulder many years ago and I can no longer bench press, but I can still work out and do other exercises for my chest.  Getting older doesn't mean you have to quit, it only means you have to train smarter.

Maybe being big isnt bringing in the same dividends it used to.

Its really all about what makes you feel big in life. If you have something in life that makes you feel big other than muscle  then you won't be worried about losing the muscle.

Ive noticed these kinds of things of feelings  start to hit in your 30's. As you get older you start to notice that being big doesn't get as much respect from your piers anymore. Suddenly its accomplishment, education, career, and money that get all the respect. Even if your small and weak. It only makes sense that something more permanent than muscle gets more respect.

I think its about deveoping something in life that will make you feel as big as muscle does. Then you wont be so obsessed with keeping the muscle so much. I mean you dont have to give up bodybuilding, I know plenty of guys that are big in life and still big in body. The only difference is they are not worried about losing the muscle.

But, hopefully the great scientists at Cell Tech will develop a way for us to keep our gains so this will become a non-issue. I figure with all those doctors in white lab coats they have it shouldn't take that long.

Once you have a solid base it doesn't really take that much to maintain it. You could probably cut your workload in half and not lose anything.

But will Jay feel secure, knowing that he will lose his muscle and Bill Gates will not lose his accomplishments. Although in this case it is different because Jay made a career and won a title that can't be taken from him. But a regular llifter guy who knows he can't keep his muscle can be tough when faced with someone who has something more permanent.

Yes and no. Many of my peers feel insecure around me. And they are generally the brilliant programmers and/or business owners. As you get older, you get MORE respect because they've all turned into rubbish.

But I can see that for the guys who, as younger people, did the sporto deal -- as they get older it gets trite.

But have Jay Cutler walk up to Bill Gates and he'll feel VERY insecure. Promise.

You're assuming that Gates would even understand what he was looking at.

Hard to say who gets injured more, but enduring aches and pains would go to naturals......a user just finds more drugs to eliminate the pain.   Ultimately the user is at the greater risk given all the shit they swallow and shootup.

Well, my $ 0,02:

To my mind , the kind of pain you're refering to is abnormal. It's not something that you should expect or even accept, because it just doesn't have to be there, in the first place, like something chronic or that comes with the turff.
Check your form to the most intricate detail. Please do....Even if you think that you know everything there's to know about lifting because of your longevity in this bizz, you're in for a surprise, I promise you. For instance, the whole 'duck feet' that every mag in the world insists to teach as the proper form to squat is rubbish, for me. My knees used to ache when I reached a certain poundage squatting that way. That's when I came across a training article from Dave Palumbo, where he tells the exact same thing that I was going through with my knees, and he told that he resolved the problem using a straight ahead position for the feet when squatting, a bit wider than the hips but inside the shoulders stance, and using orthopedical inserts made up by chiropractors inside his sneakers, I applied everything to a 'T' and guess what??! It worked like a charm.

Now I have been dealing with a severe and chronic bicep tendonitis. It turned out that I discovered I have carpal tunnel syndrome, too. While I'm in pain, there's no way I can train chest, back and biceps with my usual poundages, using the same grips and exercises. Guess what??! I addapted a new , temporary format.
I read about Danny Padilla training style, in one of the recent threads, in a post made by our own Max Rep, and decided to give it a try: high volume, 6 to 8 sets per exercise, 10 to 12 reps max each one, 4 to 5 exercises per bodypart, with a maximum rest of 1 minute between sets. Guess waht??
Otherwise a very ridicuously light weight that never crossed my mind before to use on working sets turned out to be used for the majority of remaining 6 to 8 sets, with me SCREAMING to meet the required range of reps. The trick?? MINIMAL AMOUNT OF REST BETWEEN SETS.

In the end, your job is to make an otherwise light weight relatively speaking into a heavy weight, via intensifiers. At least while in the middle of a pain crisis like I am, it's the only way to keep working and aiming for results, while you are still at the same time allowing your joints the much needed rest form the humonguous poundages they need in order to recover. Give it a try, squadfather.

Been there done that. At some point most will have to go through the process of rationalizing the program through trial and error to find exerices that are just as effective or moreso, hitting muscle fiber better and joints and ligaments less. Change the routine to remove the more stressful exercises, while taking a week's break to heal up. The injuries start to become more noticable sometime around age 30 or or 40 something. The substitute exercises won't affect size in fact sometimes the substitutes are better.

The downside is that it can mean giving up exercises that are classic examples of "strength". But this isn't so important after a while; most BBs even the top guys care less and less about this over time, having already done that.

A while back i tried one of the exercises i used to do. Could hardly stand up for a couple of days, back problem more than a week. It took a full break from exercise to get it to go away. Got a PM from a younger guy just a few days ago with exactly the same problem from the same exercise, a reminder that it wasn't just age-related; some of the exercises aren't worth doing long-term, and the substitutes are just as good.
Title: Re: Is this shit worth it????????????
Post by: pumpster on February 21, 2007, 02:29:41 PM
It's the reason I don't do exercises like bench, upright rows, straight  bar curls. etc, and mix more high rep and core type work.  Once you pass 30, you have to re-evaluate what your goals are.  Do I miss moving some of the weights I used to?  Of course, but I don't miss the sharp, unexpected shoulder pain and wrist pain.

You can still be strong and in shape, you just have to use different ways to get there.

Exactly; better warmups, moderate reps, rests no longer than 1-1/2 minutes to keep the area warm, rationalize the workout to take out inherently problematic exercises.

Another advantage of this is that sometimes the substitutes are better.

I come home with lumps and bruises, like i get the shit kicked out of me sometimes... So bad that i cant sleep until like 3 or 4 in the morning like right now my neck is so sore from a bad role. But the real question is this, which hurts worse the pain from everyday exertion or the pain you would feel from not doing shit... or just lifting mildly... I hate how i feel but i would die if i didnt wake uyp everyday with another fucked up pain... Shit in the last year my hands have been loosing major grip control when relaxed from broken fingers and knuckles but 2morrow ill be right back in the gym...

No offense but this is no long-term answer.

HYPER-GRAVITY training is the answer.

planche holds and push ups, lever holds and pull ups, muscle up variations, iron cross, hspu variations (freestanding, to the chest, on platforms, or weighted), v-holds and raises, weighted leg raises, weighted pistols, weighted unilateral good mornings (other leg stays raised), [glute ham calf raise if available],

stair climbing

difficulty on all exercices  may be increased with weighted vests (I have a 100lbs vest), and ankle weights (I have 50lbs worth of ankle weights),

And I do drop sets by gradually increasing mechanical advantage (reducing torques) and / or dropping the vest and or ankle weights.

A vibration plate really adds some fun into the mix for the unilateral leg exercises and the pressing movements.

No joint pain, no risk of disc injury, even at high intensity.

I strained my AC joint at least 5 years ago....it still hurts on occcasion. I cannot bench press without pain, but I just do my best to work around it. I work out because I love how it makes me feel when I am done....don't know what it is,but even after a vomit inducing squat workout, once that initial sickness and fatigue are gone...THAT is the greatest feeling in the world...a natural high. I think once the negatives and pain start to outweigh that sense of acomplishment and satisfaction you get after a heavy workout...then I will say it isn't worth it...but until that happens, I say yes..it's worth it.

Yeah, make gymnasts are usually pretty big and lean. Their arms are usually pretty amazing. I wonder what they do to workout.

It is their shoulder strength more than anything that amazes me.

Great leg strength too... They wear weighted vests and do deep one legged squat jumps onto high platforms.

The pain of mediocrity is far worse than any pain training hard could cause.

do any of you guys ever get tired of your knees, back, shoulders, elbows, wrists hurting on a daily basis, not being able to bend over and pick things up off the floor 90 percent of the time, i'm not feeling well today but it just got me thinking about all this pain i deal with on a daily basis, nothing really severe just annoying shit, i wish i could be satisfied with being skinny/fat like the average american guy but the thought of it scares me to death, what about you guys? just to let you know, i'm not responding to jokes and flames and bullshit so don't waste your time responding, you won't get a response.

I'm going through the same thing right now, and let me tell you, it doesn't get better with age.

I'm actually having thoughts of just saying "fuck lifting weights", especially on days when my shoulder sounds like a microwave with popcorn in it.

But I'll tell you what will happen.

I'll take a layoff, maybe even a long one. And the first time I walk into the gym after it I'll see everone still at it, hear the sounds of metal on metal echoing and all that good shit. Then I will get under some weight, bust it out, and be like Paul Newman at the end of "Color Of Money"

"I'm back baby!!!"

Sorry about that, guess what I'm tryin to say is take some time away, it won't kill you. Just the opposite actually.

Every time I take a layoff the fucking MINUTE I walk back into the gym I realize how much I truly love lifting weights
