Post by: Stubborn on April 24, 2008, 10:00:15 AM
I dont keep a training log online but I would like to record some PR's. Some are all time PR's for me and some are getting my old strength back. I lost a step or two over the winter but Im coming back!

4/23/08 - Standing OHP 2x5x275; 1x4x295 & Upright Rows 1x6x185; 1x4x225
4/21/08 - Completely RAW Squats 2x5x425 <<<Not my best ever but Im coming back.
4/18/08 - Strict Wide Pulldowns 2x6x275 & Hypers 1x4x5 plates
4/17/08 - Incline Press 2x4x285
Couple weeks back - JM Presses 1x6x315

Now they're up and I HAVE TO beat them! I'll keep posting them as they come.

you upright row 225 and then only squat 200 pounds more for the same reps?

back problems.. bro can frontsquat and zercher well but regular squats hurt him.

Like I said, some of my numbers are coming back up. I used Westside for a long time and while my box squat went up, my full squat suffered without me knowing. I thought everything was going great based on what I have read (if your box squat is high then your full squat should be even higher). When I got back to regular squats, I had nothing! I could still hit a 585 DL but my squat was just weak as hell. I could front squat more than I could back squat?!

I will get it back where it needs to be and hopefully everything else follows. And yes, my upper body has always been my strong point.

Style? Only one style I know of but I use a grip just inside shoulder width. They arent the most strict upright rows you've ever seen but they arent power cleans either! ;D

No offence to Westside, but I personally think they're way off on the box squat routine.

That whole thing is creating a powerlifting community that have shit for legs and are dead as soon as they come close to parallell.

As I stated, no offence to Westside and Louie S, as his ideas on mixing dynamic training with the usual heavy training makes lots of sense.

But the amount of partial squatting to boxes is killing the ability to squat to full depth.

Look at the best squatters in the world - the Olympic Weightlifters. They always hit way below parallell.

That's how I gather you should train for muscular strength.

You can always train competition style squats closer to meets.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. 8)

Hijack away! ;D

No offense taken! I completely agree. I was almost always box squatting below paralell (10-11" box). Still it didnt do much good.

I will still use the box squat as a variation for my training but using it exclusively is just not for me.

The way I could really tell what was happening was when the tires I flip suddenly seemed a lot heavier.

Another lesson learned the hard way.

Hedge,
I dont think this is really the place to bash westside.  Ive got some questions for you however...describe shit for legs?  You mean no huge quads?  Also, a box at the proper height is approximately one inch BELOW parallel.  You can hardly call a bastardized high box squat a legit WSB box squat.  Also, why would you not train as you compete?  I do competition style squats every week.

4/25/08 - Flat Bench 1xmore than 20x225  ;)
4/28/08 - Squats 2x5x435 <<< Felt nice and easy even after a ridiculous day of labor. :P
              Single leg curls 2x6x270

Had some trouble with front squats today. Havent done them in a while and I couldnt keep the bar on my shoulders. Only went to 365 because it kept hitting me in the throat when I would push my elbows up but if I didnt it would have dumped off. Guess I will have to invest in a harness now?

4/30/08 - Barbell Rows 2x6x315 <<<Not an all time PR. Very strict form.

Attempted to do some deads today but its become painfully apparent that my anterior pelvic tilt (lordosis) is getting worse. I have started with some "core" exercises and stretching and already feel MUCH better.

Also tried to pick up a new 330lb stone with no tacky, haha! Got maybe a half inch off the ground and it ripped my forearms up as it slid down. Love to see the blood after heavy stones! ;D

Tonight I went to the gym with the intention of getting a couple PR's on upper body work. I thought I should re-test my OHP max. I have hit 305 before, but when I put 315 on the bar it seemed impossible. Tonight I put 275 up with no leg drive and 295 with minimal leg drive. I put 315 on the bar and unracked it. It felt so light it made me laugh that I ever missed it before. As I exploded up, my right knee popped! I almost had it all the way locked out but could not straighten my knee in fear that something would snap. I was forced to limp out of the gym so that I could get home and ice my knees ASAP.

That was seriously disappointing. I think 325 may have been possible. I even wrapped my knees for fuccks sake! >:(

Lift, what stance do you use for you overhead presses, one foot forward one back, or wide foot stance.  I have tryed both, sem to be more comfortable using one forward one back like olympic lifters.

I dont double dip like oly lifters. Not because I dont want to but because I could seriously mess my knees up like that. Feet about shoulder width, maybe slightly more. I should try to go wider to get more power but its just how I am comfortable for now. Small dip, flare the lats, grip the bar as hard as I can, explode up, and push to lockout. Nothin special but I will be working on it.

Thanks for the reply Lift.  I deffinately prefer the Oly stance.  I don't see much overhead or millitary pressing in my gym, and normally have quite a gallery watching when I'm doing it.

Shitty  :'(

Did some really high rack pulls last week, worked up to 405x10 with no pain. Also front squats at 225x5 with no pain. Sadly, I was paying for it the next day so I may have pushed a little to hard. No way I will make the comp. It will come back though, just going to take longer than I wanted...

At least you realize you need rest, most dont. Nice lifts nevertheless!

My knees are garbage, haha. My right knee has been giving me problems as of late. I dont know why, its usually the left one! I have been icing it and taking my joint formula and it feels okay again. I just need to remember to warm up thoroughly before anything involving the knees even the slightest bit.

Time for some lower body work tonight so it better be ready.

I turned 21 in march and missed 405 by around 40lbs so I got alot of work left to do this summer to catch up to my goal.  Hopefully all this pressing pays off when It comes to my strongman in july, Log got the best of me at my last competition so Im ready to redeem myself

It is not a press.

It is a jerk.

Very impressive of course.

But the carry-over from jerks to shoulder strength isn't always 100%.

I was told about a fairly small bloke who were able to clean and jerk an outstanding 365 lbs.

But was so ashamed of his standing shoulder press, that he would stand in a corner doing them - training with 135 lbs on the bar. Don't know how true that story is, but it tells you something.

But as JP mentioned, great lift. And you should do well in the Apollons axle and the log lift come summertime.

Kettlebell Toss 1x20x48kg <<<Trying to simulate a keg as best I can. The KB is 50lbs heavier than the keg and it was hitting 8-10 feet high. The keg will be to 13' and only 55lbs.

Cobble Stone Load 1x4x280 No tacky

Hedge, I have seen some training vids before where (Chinese?) guys do strict presses with what looked like 120lbs or so and then jerk 300+lbs like its nothing. The technique is everything. I can get 305 standing but only 265-275 seated.

I havent been in the gym for a while because I was doing recovery work for my comp. Unfortunately it did not happen due to a tornado having ripped the town in half a couple days prior. The whole festival the town has every year was called off. One person died and something like 13 were injured. I tried to contact the promoter but got no reply. I hope he and everyone else are doing okay now!

Have you heard anything, Monopoly?

First full effort day in a couple weeks went pretty well:

RAWWWWW Squats 3x5x455 <<<Havent been here in a while! It felt great!
Leg Curl Machine (used as single leg curl) 2x8xfull stack (200lbs I think)

I needed a day like this after not getting to compete. Next comp in a month though, I'll be more than ready.

Hey bud,

Such a shitty situation. They actually did have the contest. I thought it was off, and then someone got ahold of me late on Saturday morning asking if they could use one of our stones!

Ended up going down in Loveland at some guys place. Was a decent turnout actually. I didn't hear your name so I wondered if you heard anything. I guess Willie posted something over on the Anvil Friday? I didn't see it.

Keep training hard, I think my back may be ready for the next one  8)

BTW, Pat and his family/home are okay, guess it just missed them.

Yeah, I just heard from Pat (just now!) and another guy who saw that on the Anvil. Im just about as pissed as I could ever be! I would have shown up in Windsor if my gf didnt realize that the news said the tornado was in Windsor. I checked the site and emailed Pat (he had no power I guess) and couldnt find anything about it other than the huge red lettering that said "PELICAN FEST HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER ISSUES!"

The next one is only a silver, I may have to travel to another state to compete.

Good luck with the back! See you in comp soon Im sure.

10-12" is pretty damn narrow, Goudy. You would get more power if you go about shoulder width. I go this wide because its the same as I squat and thats where all my power lies. Only problem is when I snap all that force into my legs at once, my knees want to detatch. I can rock bottom squat 455 for reps without wraps or a belt but a 300+lb Jerk tears my shit up!!!

Got a couple good PR's today:

JM Presses 2x5x335
Strict Hammer Curls 1x5(2)x110's

I just laughed at the bench today, it felt so easy after taking a couple weeks to deload. Never underestimate the power of doing very little gym work for a week or two! ;D

Ya know what strange about that is you have a 365 OHP max and a 270x2 log max. I have a 305lb OHP max and 285x4 10" log max. Kinda backwards.

Strong lifts nonetheless!!! You will go far if you stick to strongman. Good luck!

I have been doing olympic lifting a very long time...strongman I started in october of this year, only had a few months to practice, but im workin on it...Once I start using my legs a little more on that log I should be ok on it...for some reason I get Kazmiaer in my blood and feel the need to lean back and incline press it lol....With less than Kazmaier results i might add...Anyways Guys Got a real Big Highland Games this weekend so expect some monster throws...Ill try to get a vid or 2 up if i can

Great job. I think you have WAY more in the tank than that. Your press looks very explosive, but I think the clean is taking too much effort. If you can improve the clean, you'll have a ton more energy for the press. JMO. Good luck with your upcoming comps.

A couple lifts were PR's last week.

Inverted 45 degree leg press - 985x8x2 Couldnt fit anymore weight on it but I just cant bring myself to be "that guy" who puts a wobbling stack of plates on THE LEG PRESS FOR FUKCS SAKE!

Did some squats after this and was ecstatic that they keep getting easier - 2x5x425

Another day

Incline Bench - 3x5x315 felt very solid

OHP - 2x15x225 little leg drive at all

Today:

OHP - 1x1x315<<< 10lb PR!
1x1x325<<< 20lb PR!!! I gave it very little leg drive because (as you may know) my knees are SHIT! I felt them wanting to "pop" so I stopped here. Possibly could have gotten 10-20lbs more but I would be limping for a week. FINALLY, YES!!!!!! ;D

Tried to DL on a platform but my grip wasnt gonna hold up. Got up to 525 (with a goal of 600+) and tore off a callus. Never done that before.....PR MOTHERFUKCER!!!  >:( Should have brought chalk or even straps but I didnt, whatever.

PR and an INJURY in the same night!

Incline Bench - 1x5x335 fast and easy - All time PR!!!!
1x3x335 First rep is good, second rep I get a "tingle" in my right pec, third rep I got half way up and felt three ripping sensations. I dropped the barbell right to my chest and called someone over to deadlift it off for me. I did NOT want to move AT ALL! I tried a little stretching and called it a night after some cardio. That was some scary shit! Never felt a muscle tear like that.

Couple lessons from this: I will never use a spotter again as it made me too confident. Second, warm up thoroughly no matter what! I do a BBing style warm up usually and this time used a powerlifting style warm up that gets more to the point. Gotta stay with what works for ME.

I hope I am recovered within a couple weeks. :-\

Sorry to hear that bro, you will recover well.

I've always had funny sensations while doing incline BB presses, but flat BB presses never bother me.

i haven't done an incline BB press in a long time, they just don't feel right. i prefer DB's.

yeah no shit.. good question. Lift did you see any substantial bruising or pain immediately after or even the next day?  if not it was just a micro tear..had a few of them myself.

Thanks, Overload! Words of encouragement are always welcome! I dont do flat bench because it serves little purpose to me and hinders my overhead ability.

I feel about 85-90% already. I am bruised where my pec connects to the humerus. Its purple and yellow. :P

damn that sucks. what incline did you have? high? low?

The incline is on the high side but not too extreme. Does great things for my OHP.

I have about a softball sized bruise that came up about a day later. Think I had "micro tears" in the other side too, no bruise just pain and crackles happening.

Alright, so my chest is fully healed as far as I can tell but I will take it easy for a couple more weeks.

Injured my shoulder when this guy almost dropped a heavy (and expensive) piece of equipment out of the truck and I caught it with one arm.....like a dumbass! ::)

I feel almost 100% though. Havent hit many PR's with all the injuries but heres a couple:

Crazy-bell DB Rows - 2x5x170 (120 DB tied to a 50lb DB using a purple band) That thing bounced all over the place and made me stabilize rather than throw the weight around.

Pull Downs (wide and v-bar) - 4x6x300

Squat - 1x5x465 Couldnt bear another set. I even had to use my belt. Long day at work kinda kicked my ass.

I have a pic of the way I strapped the DB's together and will put it up, probably, this weekend.

i'd like to see how you did it because i need heavier DBs for rows.

Well, I can try to describe it. I bet if you just sat there for a minute you would figure it out though.

-First I folded the band in half over the big DB's handle and spread the band to each side so I could get my hand on the grip.
-Then I set the light DB next to the big one and wrapped the band around its handle and back to the big DB's handle/
-Then I just put the loose end of the band on the inside of my wrist and grabbed the big DB and started to row.

It just feels like a strap pulling on the inside of your wrist. You could also just hold the band to the DB handle and row but you would need to squeeze very tight so the band doesnt slip.

I will try to get the pic up but I need to find the software I have for my phones camera (new computer).

Title: Re: Recent PR's

Squats - 2x5x475 RAW  These felt difficult until I slowed down. Usually I just drop in the hole and spring out (oly style) but I slowed down because everything was aching. Each rep took about 6+ seconds I would say, rather than the usual 3-4 secs. The explosiveness that I have been using is catching up with me now that my numbers are coming back up and I think I will leave it to lighter days.

Between my pec tear and debilitating knee pain, I am getting the message that I must SLOW DOWN.  :(

I noticed earlier on in this thread Lift, that you said you were a welder,so to save you tying one dumbell to another,i wondered if you could do what i did.As i`ve said on here before i find lots of scrap steel on different job sites i get to work on,and i usually bring them home and make my own stuff.Maybe you could weld up something like this from any scrap you find lying around at work.I found some 1 inch thick steel plate so cut them and welded them together onto a steel bar i found. Then i found some checker plate so i grinded that into a circle shape and welded that on so the dumbell would roll. Then i welded a short length of bar on the end for any extra weight i might need to add.The weight of this dumbell is 155lbs,and i use it just for d/bell rowing, and i can make small jumps up in weight, like 5lbs a time, instead of the big jumps you have to make with the commercial bells you see in gyms.I ended up today using extra 5kg plates to take the weight to 199lbs.By using 10kg plates each side it takes it up to 245lbs,but thats a long way off for me,and the 10 kg plates only raise the height of the bell of the ground by about 1 inch.Heres a couple of pics of the 155 and the 199lbs.

Thats pretty sweet. I am back in school now so I dont weld anymore (kinda miss it). Great example though. Maybe I will get myself a little MIG so I can do small projects like this! Always wanted one but need to justify the purchase, this works for me.

What I should do is find a local metal shop and make some new friends. ;D

That was something like 6 months ago. I am alot more careful now, sometimes too cautious.

Whats really messing me up is this groin/ham pull. :(
