This is my setup:

LCD TV
Blu Ray Player
5.1 Surround Sound with Dolby True HD and Wireless Rear Speakers
Laptop with HDMI Output used in collaboration with a 2 TB external hard drive for when I buy HD movies from Itunes or CinemaNow connected to the TV and Surround sound system

And just in case, my laptop also has a 17" HD screen and built in blu ray player for when I'm on the go :-D

If your laptop does NOT have HDMI output and you want to watch downloaded movies or whatever connected from laptop to TV you can always buy WD TV Live and that should take care of your problem!

58" 1080p Plasma
connected to 7.1 Dolby Digital/DTS receiver (only using 5.1 at this time)

Then, I have all this connected to my PC.  HDMI for video to a GeForce 8800GT vid card and optical spdif cable for audio.  The PC is running a quad core AMD with 8g memory with 2TB internal hdd, and has a blu-ray/hd-dvd drive.  After years of messing around with different cables and connections, I finally have it to the point where its outputting true 1080p.  Use Windows 7 Media Center with remote and the interface is awesome.

Of course, I just accidently deleted a folder with some 800Gb of x264 1080p movies  >:(  Oops.

Got a Wii, DVD player and HD DVR cable box too, but most eveything I run at this point is through the PC.

Why aren't you using the HDMI for audio as well?  don't you have a pass through with the surround sound amp?

All connected via HDMI, I have:   Laptop ---->Amp---->TV

And with that I'm able to get surround sound when playing movies from my laptop!

Sucks about deleting the movies!

The 8800GT only has a DVI-D out, so I screwed on an HDMI adaptor, but DVI only transmits video, so I installed an optical audio cord and that carries the DTS audio just fine.

LCD
Surround sound
XBOX 360+PS3
Stream Netflix through Xbox Live
Stream music, pictures, various videos from my computer through the Xbox

Netflix is pretty much all you need these days.  $10 month, doesn't get any cheaper.
Cable is the worst invention, since breast implants.
Brilliant at the same time though.  They continually increase the amount of advertising, then raise costs on the service.
So, you're paying for poor content and to be over advertised to.  And yes, people will keep getting it.
Haven't got cable in almost 10 years or so.
Lucky me, I could care less about mainstream sports. :D

I run a media pc with anydvd HD. Great for sticking all you blu-rays on, so you don't fup the disc.
It depends on what you want to do.
mvix ultio pro
Or
The new Mac mini with hdmi port
Or
Apple tv and stream form iTunes
Or

Or
Stream to your ps3
