Dried Milk and Pro Bodybuilding
« on: April 21, 2009, 10:20:20 AM »
I never see a pro bodybuilder ever drinking milk and I understand that. Dried milk on the other hand is low in fat and high in protein depending how much powder you put in the class. On the other factor it also really cheap to allot of ameteurs out there that don't have a whole lot of money. Especially during these times when jobs are hard to find. You have to cut back on your luxuries even if it comes to food.  I know you still have to take your amino's and multivitamins, but adding dried milk to your daily nutritional regiment isn't a bad idea. More bodybuilders out there should do this.

I read this from Health Publications from a guy named Brad Dunn, via MENSFITNES.com

Nutritionally, powdered milk is equivalent to the stuff that comes from Bessy, says Bonnie Modugno, R.D. "When you compare the skim variety of both, the protein content is virtually the same. Powdered milk has just a little less carbohydrate, and both are very low in fat content."

Modugno points out that "nonfat" milk doesn't necessarily have zero fat--but because it has less than a half-gram per serving, manufacturers are permitted to list it as such. As far as nutrients go, vitamins A, [B.sub.1], B.sub.2], [B.sub.6] and [B.sub.12] in powdered milk are functionally equivalent to udder juice. "You do lose about 60 percent of the vitamin C content in powdered milk, but milk isn't a significant dietary source of C anyhow," Modugno says. And a serving of powdered milk has nearly the same calcium content (282 milligrams) as fresh (300 mg).

Given their nutritional equivalence, there are a couple of reasons you might choose powdered over fresh. "In feeding people cheaply, one of the first recommendations is to use powdered milk," Modugno says. Powdered milk is also an inexpensive alternative to other protein drinks. "Some people who are looking for protein supplementation bump up the ratio of powder to water. Using 1.2 parts of solid compared to label mixing directions will increase the protein by 20 percent. The mouth-feel is not that much different, but the taste is just a little richer."

Dried milk also keeps better than fluid milk. However, notes Modugno, "once you reconstitute it, the milk will experience the same kind of deterioration that would [occur] with a fluid-milk product. The access of the bacteria to the nutrients is just as real.

"The taste of powdered milk is off a little bit from what most people are used to with fluid milk," she says. "But the taste is good enough that people get used to it. It's the same when you go from whole milk to low-fat, or low-fat to nonfat."
