Title: Randy Poffo aka Randy Macho Man Savage died in car crash!
Post by: Playboy on May 20, 2011, 09:59:40 AM
DeathOn May 20, 2011, TMZ reported that Savage suffered a heart attack around 10AM on a highway in Tampa, Florida before losing control of the vehicle and crashing. It was later confirmed by Savage's brother, Lanny Poffo.[10] According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Savage was driving a 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he "veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree." His wife Lynn was a passenger but survived with "minor injuries".

RIP to my favorite wrestler of all time.... :'(

Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ … Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median … through oncoming traffic … and “collided head-on with a tree.”

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage’s wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision — but survived with “minor injuries.” She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor. (Surprised no one mentioned "steroids"  ::) )

An investigation into the accident is underway

I never saw or heard anything about a heart attack.

That was the report on radio news. I checked FoxNews.com and TMZ, which confirmed the story. Go there and see for yourself or turn your radio on the AM and listen to the news after one of the talk shows goes to commercial at the top of the hour.

Ok...just saw it myself. I was wondering how someone would just be casually driving and all of a sudden end up going over a median and hitting a tree.

randy's  death even made baseballreference.com, where he was in the minors trading his field of dreams for a ring of screams at the age of 21. his last year he had 107 hits and 9 hrs in a ball. he actuall started as a catcher but wrecking his right shoulder taught himself to throw lefty and tried to make it as a first baseman amazing.

Now they'll be together again in a different place.

The question in mind now is will the WWE acknowledge his death as he was one of their biggest stars in the 80's boom. TNA has already acknowledged his death. If WWE doesn't, then that prooves Vince's hatred toward Randy Savage.

This is truly sad shit. He was in his mid sixties and not young by any means. The thing I liked about Savage was not only was he a great entertainer / performer in the ring but he was decent outside the ring. You never heard anything bad about Savage. He always kept his nose clean and never got arrested.

LOL!!

Here's a secret:
The main purpose of the G&O board is to generate traffic to the site via entertainment means.
Only about 8% of the posts are serious/useful - the rest is bullshit consisting of "characters," gimmicks, trolling, and cyber-battles between "keyboard legends."
Ironically, it is this board that sees the most action from the most people.

If you seek intelligent and constructive discussions, then the truly great bastions of Getbig are the serious boards such as training, nutrition, and of course, US. ;)

Getbig is like the circus - there's something for everyone.
You've just got to know where to look.

The following are highlights from an interview with Ric Flair on Charlotte.CBSLocal.com

Flair on Randy Savage's death hitting hard: "It sure did (hit hard). It's pretty sad. He just recently got married, it's been a little over a year, and was happy and, you know, really seemed to be at peace with himself. He just had a phenomenal career and to have this happen is just really, really sad."

Flair on his WrestleMania VIII match with Savage: "That was a huge day for me and my first dance at WrestleMania, of course. It was just a tremendously well-written program. It was like he was married to Liz back then and she was a huge commodity and a huge star with the WWF, or that's what they were called back then, of course. And the thing was, 'She was mine before she was yours.' It was well-written and done and Randy worked hard at it and I worked hard at it. We had a really good match. Curt Hennig, God rest his soul, managed me and Liz managed Randy and we gave them a hell of a show and it was awesome. That was my first Mania and one of the finest memories of my career."

Flair talks more about Savage: "My thoughts about Randy are different. I think he was such a competitive guy. Randy had a really hard time relaxing and I feel bad. I think about the times I used to say to him, 'Hey man, just calm down and don't worry about this and this and this... whatever happens is going to happen.' If you go to sleep at night worrying about what's going to happen the next day, it's just too hard. You know, he worked like I did, 365 times a year back in the old days.

"He actually broke in in Charlotte in 1975. I'd only been here a year when Randy moved in down here. He played semi-pro baseball, I think, in St. Louis and was doing fairly well but wasn't blowing up the ladder like expected so he came here and broke in the business. The irony in that is when I first moved here in '74 I actually traveled with his dad several times. I knew the whole family very well. His dad just passed recently and I think that hurt Randy really bad. They were very close.

"Randy just dropped out of sight when the company was sold from WCW (to WWE). The thing I feel worst about, of all of the guys that are available and eligible to be in the WWE Hall of Fame -- there most be something that I'm unaware of that's gone on and they've never inducted him because Randy certainly was a major player for the WWF in the mecca days of the eighties and ninties."

Flair on whether or not Savage is one of the top ten wrestlers of all-time: "Of course. Yeah. Of course. ... I didn't always agree with Randy. I'm not gonna lie to you. I didn't sweat things out like he did. But I wasn't... I didn't have to fight like a dog in that race they had to be whoever they were in the eighties in that show, where everybody was fighting for position everyday of their life. I didn't have to evolve from that. I never had personal differences with him, nothing about lifestyle. It was just about business and it doesn't stop my opinion (of him) -- he always did favors for me. He came in and opened some of my Gold's Gyms.

"We were great friends. He and I clashed in business but outside of the ring we were great. He could drink beer and have a good time. And I made him laugh and helped him take his mind of things that bothered him. We got along great and had a lot of fun together. I used to say to him all the time, he probably died with 300 million dollars in the bank. I'm not exaggerating. I'm being facetious. But Randy was very thrifty. I used to say to him all the time, because he would stay at hotels that were less cost effective than where I stayed. (laughs)

"You can criticize it all you want but I'm going to enjoy the moment because you never know, you know. The irony in that is Randy was only 58 years old. That's sad because I guarantee you he's got enough money to live 200 more years. He made it. He worked hard to earn it. He worked very hard to earn it. He deserved it. But I always used to say to him, 'Man, you live for the day.' Today's another example of why you have to live for today. You never know."

The following are highlights from a recent Dusty Rhodes interview conducted by AP writer Daniel Gelston:

Rhodes on Randy Savage's impact: "When you take a look at our society and every form of entertainment, every form of sports, there are people we call players. The Ochocincos, the Troy Aikman's, the Derek Jeter's, the guys like that. Randy was that type of guy. He was a charismatic guy. He studied, he was a student of the game. He lifted 24-7. When he was not around it, he was very reclusive. He gave me good light. I was glad I have fond memories of him."

Rhodes on Savage in the ring: "He was a good dance, a good partner. If you made a mistake, he would let you know. He battled his way to where he was. When I came over from another company, my only WrestleMania was in Toronto in the SkyDome and it was a mixed tag match against 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. He was very focused. Even though he was younger than me, I learned a lot. I didn't listen to a lot of people, but I listened to him. We had a good dance. He was a good dance partner."

Rhodes on Savage staying away from wrestling: "I know he had some good investments. I know that for a fact. He had made a lot of money. He just wanted to kind of drift off. He was a recluse almost. Whatever he was doing, he wanted that privacy. Yeah, he was out of the picture for 10 years, but he didn't want to be in the picture. He was his own guy."

Rhodes on Savage as a person/wrestler: "As a person, I remember my youngest daughter, when she would go around the dressing room, he was just unbelievably, overwhelmingly nice. Almost (John) Cena-esque. He was a different guy outside of the ring. I remember the kindness and that side of him. We all have demons and devils, but the bottom line is, he was a star that took time for the regular people."

The following are highlights from a recent Jeff Jarrett interview conducted by AP writer Daniel Gelston - credit: http://www.wrestlezone.com/news/article/jeff-jarrett-talks-tna-or-impact-wrestling-savages-death-130189

Jarrett on Randy Savage: "I've known Randy since I was 11 or 12 years old. I've saw so many different sides of Randy. I've got just a flood of memories. It shocked me today."

Jarrett on earliest Savage memories: "We called him the opposition promoter. His promotion in eastern Kentucky ran against my father's promotion in the Tennessee area. There was a lot of bad blood and lawsuits and fights and threats and death threats. Because of the television situation, my father ended up winning that war and Randy came to work for my father. He was an arch enemy on Saturday morning, then he became a huge ally."

Jarrett on Savage staying away from wrestling: "Randy saved his money. I'm sure he had 50 cents out of the first dollar he ever made. I say that in the literal sense. His father had a persona as the miser way back when. Randy was very frugal with his money. When Randy stepped out of the ring, he didn't need to come back. There wasn't enough money to pay him to come back. He was a guy that retired and retired happily, finanically and emotionally."

Jarrett on if the company is called TNA or Impact Wrestling: "It's TNA, absolutely."

Sometime around 4am EST which would be 1 am where "Rowdy" Roddy Piper lives in Oregon, he posted the following on his Twitter account

"Randy slapped Vince in a bar...End of that story!!"

Piper was sharing Macho Man stories on his twitter throughout the evening.

This of course is relevant because of the long debated mystery of why the Macho Man has never been seen on WWE television since he left for WCW after guys such as Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart and others have done business with Vince McMahon since their individual problems with him.

Another note to this, it is a tale that has been confirmed by different people over the years, when Kevin Wacholz who played Nailz physically attacked Vince McMahon in his office and of course never worked or was heard from in any way by the WWE since. So, if Piper's story is in fact what broke any and all relationship with McMahon, it would not be surprising as getting physical with the boss is just a line that can't be crossed or forgotten. Bret Hart obviously got physical with Vince after the Survivor Series in match but I am sure most including Vince would admit that is a much different circumstance.

Slim Jim release the following statement regarding the passing of Macho Man Randy Savage:

"We're saddened by the loss. Randy was a beloved ambassador for the Slim Jim brand for many years and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time."

Wow.... so sad to see a guy who had his head on straight go out like this.  I'm SURE some jackwad will try to tie steroids to the heart attack in some way.....bet anything on it.

Well, Savage was only 58 and, by any other standards, in pretty good shape. We know he was a workout fiend. As he said during a promo, where he's with a shrink who's doing a word association game with him and uses the word, "pump", Pump, Pumping Iron, YEAH!!! Hulk Hogan doesn't have the only key to the gym. I'm there every morning...YEAH!!!".

How ironic. One, I bought the "Macho Madness" DVD set that WWE made, about a year ago and I'm watching the same thing: The career-ending match between "Macho King" Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior.

Two, Warrior was the original spokesman for Slim Jim that the company got from WWE (look at some of the old Coliseum Video released from 1990 and 1991). But, when he got canned, Savage took his place. The rest, as they say is history.

Piper is the man, so I'm not doubting him, but it seem  pretty petty if that was the whole  story.

How do you know he was in "pretty good shape?"  He might have had an undetected heart condition, etc...  Not to mention appearing to be in good shape has zero to do with actually being healthy.  high bp, high cholesterol, poor diet, etc....  who knows? Certainly none of us.

That's why I said, "by any other standards". Savage had no well-known history of heart problems (like those of Scott "Razor Ramon" Hall). And, he looked terrific at 58 years old.

Thats why I mentioned looking healthy has zero to do with being healthy.  And every year there are athletes at every level who die of heart complications who have no history of heart problems, simply because they were never tested.  IE: Reggie Lewis, Hank Gathers, etc...

And they croaked fairly young, not at 58 years old. Given Savage's history of injuries (I saw him at Gold's Gym in Pinellas Park, FL, which is 30 or so miles south of Tampa, when he injured his knee. Gorgeous George and another girl had to help him hobble to his car), one would think that Savage has had his share of checkups.

You would think so, but unless they did some type of EKG and even then it isn't always revealed, he might have had a condition that was undetected for years.  I wonder if they did an autopsy?

Apparently when a dog of his named Hercules died, the dog's ashes were scattered around the tree and Savage said "If it's good enough for Herc, it's good enough for me."

I wonder if they did an autopsy?

More tests will be conducted to determine the cause of death for Randy "Macho Man" Savage after autopsy results did not reveal extensive trauma, according to Pinellas County officials.

The autopsy results are considered "pending" while additional tests are completed, said Bill Pellan, director of investigations for the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office. Outside testing will include toxicoloy and histology tests, and could take four to six weeks, he said.

I enjoyed the accounts above that touched upon Savage's money habits.
Most guys just carelessly blow it because they - as Flair likes to say - live for the day.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds as if even Flair has had his shair of financial problems, for whatever reason(s) over the years.

Meanwhile, Lanny Poffo - who made a lot less than guys who worked above him & now have basically nothing to show for it - is living quite comfortably in FL and enjoying his post-wrestling retirement.

One of "The Macho Man" Randy Savage's greatest rivals from the 80's, George "The Animal" Steele, was on Busted Open with Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca, which airs Mondays and Wednesdays at 2-4 PM ET on Sirius 92 and XM 207.

"That's been said a lot of different ways, and there's been a lot of different things said that are not true necessarily."

"I think that what happened with Randy, when his career was winding down with the WWF, Vince McMahon just loved Randy," he continued. "After all everything Randy had done and he took him under his wing, and he wanted Randy after the ring was over with for him, he wanted him to be our spokesperson. He was traveling with Vince all the time. Randy was almost like a son, they were really tight. And then one day, we were at a TV meeting, and we got word that Randy, without calling Vince, had left and jumped to the WCW."

"I had never seen Vince McMahon broken before, he was crushed. It hurt him big time and I don't think he ever got over that. I think that's the real problem to be honest with you. I heard all this other stuff that I think is garbage when it comes to Randy and relationships with daughters and all that stuff... I don't think that's anywhere's close to the truth."

Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports has an article chronicling Randy Savage's extraordinary wrestling career and it features behind-the-scenes details on how it came to an end.

Savage briefly appeared for TNA Wrestling in late 2004 to feud with Jeff Jarrett. At the December pay-per-view, Turning Point, he was scheduled to partner with Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles in a tag team match against The Kings of Wrestling—Jarrett, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Savage, who hadn't wrestled in over four years, flaked out of the match mere minutes before the pay-per-view was to go live.

WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, who was TNA's head booker at the time, recalled the tumultuous ordeal backstage in a quote for the article.

"The last words he said to me, five minutes before the PPV, was, 'I can't do this. I don't want people to see me looking like this,'" Rhodes remembered. "Jerry [Jarrett, a TNA company co-owner] called [event producer] Keith Mitchell in, and I said, 'Change the main event. I said to him, 'Randy, just go home. It's okay with me.' That's the last words he said to me."

To explain the wrestling legend's absence from the match, an angle was hastily scripted for The Kings of Wrestling to attack Savage and stuff him into the trunk of a limo, which spend off out of the arena's parking lot. Without Savage, Styles and Hardy had to work the match by themselves. Savage ultimately appeared, albeit briefly.

After several minutes of Hardy and Styles fighting off The Kings of Wrestling, Savage, wearing a long black shirt to hide his shrunken physique, returned to the Impact! Zone and walked down to the ring. He was tagged in by Hardy moments later and pinned Jarrett after a punch to the jaw.

Savage bolted from the promotion days later at an iMPACT! taping due to a disagreement over the finish of his match at the next scheduled pay-per-view, Final Resolution. He had requested that he win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Jeff Jarrett at the event, but was denied. He never wrestled again.

Rhodes, who lived a 20-minute drive from Savage, never saw him again following Turning Point. He compared Savage of the last five years of his life to the reclusive lifestyle of Howard Hughes.

"I could see it in his eyes ... he just didn't want to do it," said Rhodes. "Obviously, he was financially set. Out of all of us from that era, [Ric] Flair, Hogan, Andre, myself, how many of us walked away.One."

WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart, a long time colleague of “Macho Man” Randy Savage, appeared on Busted Open with Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca, which airs Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sirius 92 and XM 207. Highlights from his interview are as follows:

Hart on how is the Poffo family holding up in the wake of Randy’s passing?: “I think since three days since it happened, pretty darn good. Lanny’s always been great. I think what they decided to do too, because I got so many calls from everybody wondering where the funeral is going to be… I know you know it by now too, going to be cremated of course. His ashes are going to be spread on his property. Now, the reason I’m saying this, and its already out there anyhow… Lanny confirmed it too… where his dog Hercules passed away and was buried.

“I think just a little private deal is going to be for Randy’s family, I don’t think he wanted something very very big and that’s kind of the way he was. When he did charities, he never went out there and told people about it or anything and I think donations are going to be sent in in his name are going to be in Tampa for one of the children’s foundations here. I think they’re doing pretty well for it just happening three or four days ago.”

Hart on the relationship between Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan: “I don’t think it was as bad as sometimes people make it out to be because in the wrestling business, there’s always a little angle right around the corner where people can work together and make a ton of money. I think it ended up pretty well. I think when Hulk was going in to the hospital for one of his operations with his back, Randy happened to be at the same place. He stepped in to the room, said hello to Hulk and everything else.

“At the end, everything was pretty well being put back together again. Sometimes people make more of it than what it really is sometimes but being on this end and hearing a little bit of the scuttlebutt here and there, it was almost like a big wrestling angle. It still amazes me how people buy into and believe a what they think is a shoot but it turns out to be a well played work that made both parties major money. Randy was great, there will only be one Macho Man ever ever, colorful and did some great things nobody ever really knew about because he was so private.”

The latest on this story...

An autopsy was completed Saturday on Randy Savage and the cause of death is still “pending,” reports TMZ.com.

TMZ.com adds that the Medical Examiner in Pinellas County, Florida did not notice “extensive trauma” to his body while conducting the autopsy.

Toxicology results are expected to be released in four to six weeks. It was previously reported that the police didn’t suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved and this was natural causes.

Savage died in a car accident Friday in Seminole, Florida when his 2009 Jeep Wrangler veered across a concrete median, through oncoming traffic, and “collided head-on with a tree.”

Savage was pronounced dead at Largo Medical Center while his wife Barbara Lynn suffered minor injuries.

Read somewhere that Randy taught himself to throw left-handed while playing in the minor leagues. Apparently, he badly injured his right, dominant shoulder or rotator cuff and decided to teach himself to throw with the other hand. And was able to do so quite effectively and keep playing full-time.

I'm still so bummed about his death. He was my favorite wrestler to watch when I was a kid. So many memories.  :'(

Randy Savage's obituary was published in the St. Petersburgh Times and reads as followed:

POFFO, Randy Mario 58, known better to many as professional wrestling legend "Macho Man" Randy Savage, passed away at Largo Medical Center on Friday May 20, 2011, following a motor vehicle accident in Seminole.

Randy was born Nov. 15, 1952 in Columbus, OH. He graduated from Downers Grove North High School in Downers Grove, IL where he was a member of the National Honor Society. After high school Randy played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox organizations until 1975.

In 1985 he joined the World Westling Federation, where he earned international fame with his entertaining antics and quotable catchphrase "Oooohh Yeaahh". Randy was a spokesperson for Slim Jim, popularizing the slogan "Snap into a Slim Jim!" He also played Bone Saw McGraw in the 2002 blockbuster hit movie "Spider Man."

Randy was a generous supporter of charitable causes. For several years every holiday season, he visited All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg to deliver gifts to patients and participated in the George Steinbrenner Children's Holiday Concert for underprivileged kids of Tampa. He also recently took part as a celebrity guest judge in a fundraiser benefiting Art for Autism.

TMZ.com is reporting that Macho Man Randy Savage was laid to rest yesterday, and that one of his final requests was that his old WWF theme music NOT be played at his funeral. It's being reported that Savage told his brother, Lanny Poffo, in recent years, that he felt guilty about using Pomp and Circumstance as his theme music as he felt he stole it from his pro wrestling idol, Gorgeous George.

TMZ is also reporting that a high powered hand gun was found in Savage's possession at the time of his car accident. The report notes that he had a permit for the gun and that him and his wife enjoyed target shooting.

Anyone find it kind of odd that Randy didn't have any kids? His prerogative, I'm sure.

I'm 37 with no kids, yet I don't find it strange myself. It's actually a relief to be honest.

Not really. In his prime he was in the road 300+ days a year. Why bother having kids if your never gonna see them. I thought it was a wise decision on his part.

Just some random thoughts on Savage.  I remember when he came to the WWF going to a friend of my dads house to watch USA network.  It was when the WWF had all the managers scouting him and trying to sign him.  It was a great way to bring him in.  I preferred his look at that time too.  Leaner, quicker and just an incredible athlete.

I did not care for the whole "Macho King" makevoer and changing how he dressed somewhat. All those tassels were lame.  But that was par for the course during that time in the WWF.

You and me both. I like the old Macho Man with the boots and matching knee pads with the tights that had the stars with "Macho Man" written on the back. I hated the long tights with the fitted sweater bullshit. Never liked the "Macho King" thing. Although sucessfull, I preferred the "Macho Man" original gimmick.

Vince McMahon has written an article about the late Macho Man Randy Savage in the new issue of Time Magazine. The following is an excerpt:

"It's important in sports and it's important in entertainment to stand out. Randy knew that. Right away, he wanted to leave his mark, and to do that he was aware he had to make himself different from everyone else. One way he did this was concentrating on his outfits, those brightly colored costumes with foot-long fringe that became his trademark. He brought to wrestling a unique look and style.

Randy, who died in a car crash May 20 at age 58, was one of the building blocks of what is now WWE."

From Jim Ross's blog:

Tweeter follower asked me where I thought Randy Savage got the majority of his in ring influences. Savage was very individualistic but I've always been of the mindset that his costumes and music were somewhat influenced by WWE HOF'er Gorgeous George. Randy was amazingly intense, virtually 24/7, and brought natural athleticism to the squared circle. We never always agreed on a variety of professional matters and had our share of disagreements but never once did i not respect his in ring ability and the fact that he was one of the biggest , pro wrestling stars of all time.

I thought it was cool that Randy requested that Pomp and Circumstance not be played at his funeral out of respect for Gorgeous George.  I always wondered what bookers such as JR had against Savage on "professional matters" as it seemed to me Savage did whatever was required to get an angle over and had NO problem jobbing on occasion.  wonder if any of these guys have the nuts to say anything about Hogan in regards to that?  Of course not.....  ::)

I wonder what they butted heads about....by the time JR arrived, Macho's in ring carrer was slowing down and I doubt JR had the pull behind the scenes then that he did in later years. I remember them doing commenatry together a lot, though.

JR didn't get to be a VP for nothing.
I strongly suspect that he tried to get as involved as he could in the company and made a point to get his ideas & voice heard from day 1.

And, the more you talk, the more detractors you'll encounter just by chance alone.

I still say its the jealousy factor. Savage was always professional and he never signed the dotted line on a contract unless the offer was tasty. He remained private and avoided the lime light and it still got him negative remarks. Vince and company where jealous that Savage jumped shiop to WCW back in 1994 to take a 2mill per year deal for 6 years and he also took Slim Jim with him. That's why Vince was pissed. As for the wrestlers, I don't think anyone had a bad thing to say about Savage.

They really paid him 2 mill a year for 6 years? Good for him! What kind of number's was he pulling in the Federation before he left?
Savage was an instant star when he arrived in the spring of 1985. When he became IC champ in early 1986, he was getting 750,000 per year until 1988 when he was getting 1 million per year up until 1993. Once he started letting up and commentating he took a paycut and that's when Turner offered him 2 million. Turner's pockets were much more deeper than Vince's.

I liked the "Macho King" deal, especially when they replaced that goofy regular crown with the gold crown with the word "MACHO" in the center. That was cool. Once he started donning the cowboy hat, the whole "Macho King" thing lost his steam.

That Steamboat program was incredible.
I just listened to Ricky's shoot interview again, and the chemistry he & Savage had together was amazing.

Macho's ring work was always top-notch.
As for his character, I was a huge mark up until the crowning.
My absolute favorite remains his early WWF heel work, which was outstanding, IMO.

"Randy, who died in a car crash May 20 at age 58, was one of the building blocks of what is now WWE (previously known as the World Wrestling Federation). He had a very unusual voice --remember his "Snap into a Slim Jim. Oh, yeah!" commercials?--and was extremely charismatic. Perception is very important in this business, and he also had a very high opinion of himself, something he needed in a locker room full of performers who had been around for a while and had big personalities and followings--like Hulk Hogan, Today, Randy is remembered as one of wrestling's all time greats. No question about it--he certainly was."

Randy Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo has told Bay News 9 that Randy’s cause of death was a result of a condition known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). VF is a severely abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to fainting or heart attacks.

Here is their full article:

It’s been a little more than two weeks since the death of wrestler Randy “Macho Man” Savage and we now know the cause.

In an exclusive interview with Bright House Sports Network, Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo told us, Savage died from a condition known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). VF is a severely abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to fainting or heart attacks.

Poffo said, “What it means to me is, it was a beautiful way to die. It’s quick, painless.”

Also in the interview, Poffo called Savage’s wife, Lynn a hero. Poffo said, “Randy’s foot was still on the accelerator. She reached over and steered the Jeep Wrangler into a tree, saving the live of a motorcyclist and possibly a bus. You know, there’s no telling what can happen when you’re going the wrong way.”

Savage was 58 years old when he died.

"Lanny Poffo discussed the death of his brother, former WWF champion Randy Savage, with The Brighthouse Bay 9 News in Florida.

Poffo discussed learning of Savage's accident while traveling to a booking in California. In an airport in between flights, Poffo received a message from Largo Medical in Florida, that his brother had been in an autop accident. When Poffo returned the call, they put him through to Savage's wife, who explained to him that Randy had passed on.

Poffo noted that Savage had told his wife he wasn't feeling well and thought he might pass out just before he collapsed while driving his Jeep Wrangler. Poffo said that he considered the way Savage passed "a beautiful way" to die, comparing it to someone who fights valiantly against something like cancer for years with no quality of life.

Poffo stated that Lynn, who suffered lacerations to the head in the car wreck, was a hero for grabbing the wheel and steering the car, which had gone into oncoming traffic, into a tree. He noted that she likely saved the lives of a motorcyclist and a bus. Poffo noted that he was so happy that they had gotten married the year before and recited a poem he wrote for their wedding.

Poffo also discussed Randy's run with the WWF, why those who criticize Vince McMahon for not being "so smart" as a promoter don't know what they are talking about, Savage's marriage to Elizabeth and much more. Poffo also noted that WWF's original idea was to give Savage a "buxom blonde" as his manager but Savage pitched Elizabeth for a screen test in the role and she nailed it.

Poffo was asked about the divorce. He commented that, "I think he did a great job moving on. He hit bottom and moved on. How in love was he? How would I know? How would you know? One of the great things about Randy - one of the definitive things - when life gave him a cruel blow, he bounced back with ferocity, better than ever. I think he did well...."

Poffo said that Savage always looked after him and actually came up with the Genius persona that led to Poffo main eventing in WWF.

In a never disclosed injury, Poffo noted that Savage had chronic pain in the neck and after filming the Spider-Man film, was unable to get out of bed the next day following a series of bumps where he was spiked on top of his head.

Poffo noted that he liked the WWE tribute video "a lot" and didn't feel it was too little, too late. He said that Savage knew that Vince McMahon and the WWF made both him and Poffo. He said that he wasn't going to deal with the negatives and was taking the high road. He said that WWF gave Savage the break baseball never did."

On Wednesday, Lanny Poffo spoke with the Bright House Network about the death of his brother Randy. The full video of the interview was uploaded on Friday and Poffo made the following comments, according to BayNews9.com:

Quote
"You know what, Randy didn't feel that, Randy never felt that way. He knew Vince McMahon gave him the break. We know where it (the falling out between WWE and Savage) all came from. We know what started it. We're not going to deal in negatives, we're going to take the high road. Too little, too late? I wouldn't dare say that because they gave Randy the break baseball never did."

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- A medical examiner says something went wrong with professional wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage's heart before he crashed his car and declared the cause of death as heart disease.

The autopsy released Thursday reveals that 58-year-old Randy Poffo, known professionally as Randy Savage, had an enlarged heart with severe blocking of his coronary arteries. With only minor injuries from the crash, the Tampa Bay area medical examiner determined the cause of death to be heart disease.

Authorities say Savage was driving in Pinellas County May 20 when he lost consciousness and crashed into a tree. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Toxicology results showed small traces of alcohol and hydrocodone in Poffo's system, but officials say the amounts wouldn't have factored into the crash.

wrestlezone.com

In a new article posted by SLAM! Wrestling, Lanny Poffo, brother of the late Macho Man Randy Savage, spoke out about the WWE Hall of Fame and had the following to say:

"Yes, we talked about it. As a matter of fact, what he was, remember when the Von Erichs got into the Hall of Fame? That was the first time he'd mentioned it, and my father was still alive. We celebrated his birthday, and at this point my father was coherent. He says, 'The Von Erichs are in the Hall of Fame? I'm not going in, ever, into the Hall of Fame unless it's the Poffos, Lanny, Randy and Angelo.' That's what he said. We didn't cremate him against his wishes and we're not going to go into the Hall of Fame against his wishes either."

Just read that he will be on a new WWE game coming out, perhaps the door is opening for the HOF?

If they're going through his family/estate, then I think it's a good possibility.
Although Vince has already made a mockery of his company's HOF, Savage & Bruno should be in it.

Does anyone know: has Ultimate Warrior been featured on any "Legends" video games, etc. within the last 10 years or so?

Didn't realize Savage wasn't in the WWF hall-of-fame....i refuse to just call it the "wrestling" hall of fame as it is NOT.  What a complete joke.

Okay, I thought you may have meant to type "macho," but there seemed to be too many extra letters for a typo.

A current guy on the WWE roster who reminds me of Macho Man is Seth Rollins. He has a similar type of dynamic athleticism.

The jumping front roll he does over the barricade is both unique and very cool.

What did you think of his tribute to Savage by coming out the next night wearing ring gear similar to Macho's?

I thought it was classy on Punks part. Right now as far as the current roster goes..Punk is my fav. Much better as a heel though.  His wrestling ability and pipe bombs are gold. 1.2mil well spent.

Yeah, I also thought it was in good taste, and I suspect most other people did, too.

I wonder how he would manage without the Fed. You said he makes $1.2M/year?

Thats what hes getting from Vince. Hes very popular overseas too. AJPW offered him big bucks too while he was negotiatiating his current deal thus the infamous pipe bomb shoot cross legged at the top of the ramp.

It was but he went off script and went into business for himself.  Vince had to sign him. He just won the title off his golden boy Cena.
Can u imagine if Punk showed up in All Japan or ROH with the title???:)
Title: Re: R.I.P. Randy Savage TRIBUTE:

it had to be part work minimum, Vince would have turned the mic off and had him escorted out. Unless he wanted to see where it was going in order to gain viewer interest. I think its all a work because Punk is the ONLY man on the roster capable of pulling it off and making certain parts look legit shoot.
