Sometimes I tense every muscle in my little body too.  I don`t die though, much to the chagrin of Getbig of course.

As a doctor (I really am one) I've seen people actually die. Usually you see it coming, there is a last spark of life and then they stop breathing. It's not like in the movies that they suddenly turn their head or close their eyes. They just become motionless. Most of the time it's not ugly or terrible at all, except when it's a child or a young healthy person...

It is not a "peaceful" look, but instead one of emptiness.  The vessel is void of what made it that person.  Perhaps this is why you will hear people comment on the body and not the person.  When the last breath is exhaled and the heart beats no more, the color is stripped away and a pallor of grey sweeps over the body.  They are gone...

I suspect you know this all too well, sir.

its fucking weird, when the life is out of a person it suddenly is not that person anymore that you knew. also with my grandmother, when she was dead and prepared for the funeral service (dont know how you say that in english) i couldnt even recognise her anymore, as if the person was mistakenly changed for another.

Had that with my grandfather, he died when I was 13. I wanted to see him in the coffin, but I wish I hadn't. He didn't look like him at all.
He looked like Pavol Jablonicki  ( ;))

Since some have begun quotes on life and death.  If I may...

"Why is it we rejoice at a birth and grieve at a funeral?  It is because we are not the person involved."  - Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)

"Consummatum est" - Jesus of Nazareth at his death (or at least the Latin translation).

I've never been an animal fanatic or anything but I can understand the effect something like that could have on you.  Like you said there isn't much you could have done, nice job on the effort never the less.
