Depressed Weiner: Friends Worry About His Mental State
Gothamist ^ | 06/12/11

________________________ ________________________ _______

Pelosi was reportedly particularly frustrated because when she called Weiner during the week, he said he couldn't make any decisions on resigning until his wife, Huma Abedin, returned from an overseas trip with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which the Times said "they viewed as an unpersuasive pretext." Through all those calls, she became increasingly convinced that his behavior required serious, if vague, medical intervention:

“When you are this self-destructive, there is obviously something deeper going on with you,” said a Pelosi adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being seen as betraying her confidence. Weiner's friends and advisors told the Times that he had been consulting with a therapist all week as pressure mounted and the scandal wore-on; one said he was no longer in a position to make clear-headed decisions about his career and health: “He was falling apart.” According to GOP Rep. Peter King, the taint of Friday's revelation that he had messaged with a 17-year-old girl allegedly "really tipped it over" for Weiner. On Friday, Weiner privately agreed that traditional therapy would not be enough for his issues; he reportedly made his decision to check into an out-of-town clinic that day, and made travel plans for Saturday afternoon (although he left time to run his errands in the morning). He will be evaluated before it is determined what kind of treatment he will receive. Senator Chuck Schumer agreed that this was the best move: “I am heartbroken. It’s clear he needs professional help and I am glad he is seeking it.” Contact the author of this article or email tips@gothamist.com with further questions, comments or tips.

Women Dems turned on by Rep. Anthony Weiner's politics are disgusted by his sexting antics
NYDailyNews.com ^ | 6/12/2011 | MAGGIE HAYES AND JOSE MARTINEZ

The Anthony Weiner scandal has created a dilemma for female Democrats who are turned on by his politics but turned off by his sexual shenanigans.

"He's a pervert," said Lata Lewis, 31, a school safety officer from Cypress Hills. "It's not cool."

The sext maniac may still have the backing of his wife, Huma Abedin, but other women say they are appalled by his boneheaded behavior.

"It's laughable how stupid a man can be," said Kathleen Peet, 70, a Chelsea retiree.

"It's very offensive," said Trina Brown, 40, a student from Hell's Kitchen. "Before this, I had respect for him."

Hillary Clinton takes Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, under her wing
The Australian ^ | June 13, 2011 | Tony Allen-Mills
Posted on June 12, 2011 5:44:19 PM EDT by PJ-Comix

SOMEWHERE between Abu Dhabi and Lusaka, the US's most powerful diplomat sat down with her closest aide last week and talked of straying husbands, predatory women and internet sex.

It was not quite what Hillary Clinton had intended when she set off on her latest tour as US Secretary of State; yet it is hard to think of anyone in Washington better equipped to offer advice on the painful fallout from a sexual scandal.

For once, the shenanigans had not involved Clinton's husband, Bill. Yet the saga of congressman Anthony Weiner's penis and how its picture turned up in cyberspace has crushed one of the Clintons' most cherished acolytes and added a poignant human twist to an otherwise farcical tabloid tale.

She is officially Hillary's deputy chief of staff but Huma Abedin, Weiner's clever and glamorous 35-year-old wife, means far more to the Clintons than her title suggests. Hillary once described her as "a second daughter" and when Abedin married Weiner last year, Bill presided over their vows in his capacity as former president.

Abedin was a political intern when she joined Hillary's staff 15 years ago. She grew so close to the then first lady that rabid Clinton-haters began to spread false rumours of a lesbian affair.

When Hillary ran for a Senate seat in New York, Abedin went with her. When she joined President Barack Obama's cabinet, Abedin became one of the few Clinton advisers who had worked at both the White House and the State Department.

Last week, she experienced a less enviable aspect of life with the Clintons, as her husband bumbled his way through pitiful lies and tearful apologies for his so-called sexting habits.

Weiner said he was confident he would be able to "right these wrongs" once his wife returned from Africa. Friends said he had not slept with any of the six women he admitted to texting, and that no more revelations would emerge. "He is not Tiger Woods," an aide said.

If Abedin returns smiling from Africa, throws her arms around her husband and declares herself determined to make their marriage work, Weiner's career may be safe. Yet, in one sense, he will remain a loser, whatever his wife and colleagues decide.

He used to enjoy the Clintons' favour but Hillary, for one, is unlikely to forgive him for embarrassing a loyal aide.

BigGovernment has learned from a confidential source on Capitol Hill that, starting tomorrow, Rep. Weiner’s DC staff will depart for other Congressional offices. According to our source, staff from Democrat leadership assembled Rep. Weiner’s staff and offered to assist them finding positions in other offices. Finding positions for everyone in Weiner’s DC office could take a week or two.

Rep. Anthony Weiner finally considering he may have to resign amid sexting scandal, says source
NY Daily News ^ | 6/12/11 | Alison Gendar
Posted on June 12, 2011 7:48:16 PM EDT by ruralvoter

As a cache of embarrassing new photos appeared Sunday, Rep. Anthony Weiner finally began considering the possibility that he may have to resign.

A source close to the congressman told the Daily News that Weiner had been adamant about keeping his seat - even as the Democratic leadership urged him to quit amid daily new revelations of reckless sexting.

But the unrelenting media coverage, the demands he step down from his party's leadership, and the appearance of more humiliating photos made Weiner realize he may not be able to bull through the crisis after all, the source said.

New pictures of him in the Congressional gym grabbing his crotch.  Precisely the kind of conduct we should expect from our elected representatives.   ::)

This turkey should not last past Monday.  If he has an ounce of integrity he will stop the bleeding.

White House won't say Weiner should resign
By Sam Youngman - 06/13/11 11:32 AM ET

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/166039-white-house-weiner-is-a-distraction

A White House spokesman said Monday that Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) is a "distraction" from important issues, but he stopped short of calling for Weiner's resignation.

White House press secretary Jay Carney, who refused to comment on the scandal last week, said Monday that "the president feels, we feel at the White House this is a distraction."

"As Congressman Weiner has said himself, his behavior was inappropriate, dishonesty was inappropriate," Carney said, briefing reporters aboard Air Force One. "But the president is focused on his job which is getting this economy continuing to grow, creating jobs and ensuring the safety and security of the American people."

Several senior Democrats, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), and Democratic Campaign Congressional Chairman Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), called on Weiner to resign over the weekend.

When pressed on whether Obama would like to see Weiner resign, Carney demurred.

"I answered that question," Carney said. "We think it's a distraction from the important business that this president needs to conduct and congress need to conduct. Beyond that I don't have any more comment."

Weiner entered a rehab facility over the weekend and has requested a leave of absence from the House while he seeks treatment.

New Weiner scandal: license plate fraud?
Hotair ^ | June 13, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

________________________ ________________________ ___-

The one thing we can’t say with certitude is that Anthony Weiner has been registering his vehicles with the DMV. The New York Daily News did a little investigating after seeing expired tags on his Nissan Pathfinder, and discovered that not only has the car not been registered, but the plates on them belong to a different car (via JWF):

When Weiner (D-Queens, Brooklyn) was photographed by the Daily News fleeing the Capitol in his Nissan Pathfinder, it was clear the July 2007 registration sticker in his window was expired, and there was no inspection sticker to be seen. Weiner, through a staffer, said the 1988 Nissan Pathfinder was registered in New York State.

Not so, said the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

The New York license plate bolted on Weiner’s Pathfinder - US Congress 9 – had expired as of 2006, according to the DMV.

“That license plate should not be on a car,” a DMV spokeswoman said. It wasn’t even issued to the Pathfinder, but to another one of Weiner’s cars, a Honda, according to vehicle records.

As abuses of power go, this one is decidedly tamer than the scandal surrounding Weiner the last couple of weeks. Still, as one investigator told the NYDN, swapping plates is something one would normally expect of a criminal, not a member of Congress. Or is that a redundancy?

This new peek into Weiner’s approach to responsibility may lend itself less to double entendres and hilarious jokes, but it may also be more revealing. Until now, Weiner earned $174,000 in annual salary as a Congressman. His wife earns almost the same amount working for Hillary Clinton, putting their combined household income at a figure exceeding $325,000 per year. Weiner has agitated for higher taxes and more government regulation, but has apparently evaded his responsibility to pay for fees owed the state of New York for the last four years — even switching plates to save himself a few hundred dollars.

If that’s less sexy than Weiner’s social-networking scandal (in all senses of the word), it speaks more directly to a ruling-clique sensibility and utter hypocrisy.
