Mr.Marsh, if you're interested in katanas as art, and if financial resources are not of concern, then the best suggestion I can give you is to comission a Japanese tosho to craft one for you. Unlike what some might tell you, the traditional Japanese crafsmiths still make the epitome of art shinken. The attention to detail, and especially the finishing and polishing, are second to none and not available in the West.

If budgetary issues are a concern, then the second option is to have it hand-crafted by an American or European smith, who utilizes hand-made steel. This is of paramount importance if the artistic apect is relevant, because factory steels do not produce nice jitetsu do to the homogeneity of the Carbon distribution in the steel. Some American and European smiths make their own oroshigane, but that is rare. Another option is to use denkaitetsu, which is electrolitic iron that is enriched with Carbon and then made into the blade.

Factory made blades are completely worhtless from an artistic point of view, due to their homogeneity, sub-par finishing and polishing and especially the bland grain pattern on the surface of the steel. Even the hamon is etched with oil, and just looks artificial - which it is. I must emphasize that my advice is being given taking in consideration your emphasis on the artistic aspect. If you desire a katana simply for practicing tameshigiri, then any katana made by a machine is good enough.
