Recognizr: Phone App Helps You Identify And Friend Strangers Through Face Recognition, Social Networking.
If you thought the amount of information people could find about you on the Internet was already too much, or too easy to locate, then this app may scare you more than a little. It’s called Recognizr and automatically creates a profile for a person from a single image of their face.
The app Stalking, meet your future?allows you to create profiles based on actually seeing a person and pointing your camera in their direction. Recognizr captures the face, turns it into a 3D model, and checks it against a database online. Information can then be associated with that person such as their name, Facebook account, cellphone number, YouTube account etc.
Between a group of friends it could be an easy way to gain access to new content they have uploaded. For example, you are out with a friend for a drink, and they say there’s a new YouTube video on their account. Rather than go searching for their account in your stored links you can load up Recognizr, point it at your friend, and the YouTube account bubble link will automatically appear giving you one click access.
Those of you thinking this could be used to identify people you don’t know can relax a little. Recognizr uses an opt-in process. You have to choose to allow it to recognize you by uploading your image to the service. Those that do opt-in, however, could be subjected to some very focused marketing in the future if advertisers embrace such a system. Complete strangers may also be able to grab your identity without your consent.
