This pretty much sums it up. There's mistakes, then there's just plain stupidity. This was the latter.

If they didn't fire him, it would be assumed that they tolerate that.

1. People can and should be free to say anything they desire regardless of who it may offend.

2. BUT, when you are representing (or working for ) a company or organization , it's different.
In this situation you are held RESPONSIBLE by the organization for your words.

You can't assume absolute free speech when working for a network or corporation.
A cooperate network needs to sell advertisement time on air.
The more popular the show is, the more people watch and the more valuable the ad time.
Being edgy and controversial is fine UNLESS it pissed off too many potential customers of your sponsors.

This is why CNN, FOX, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC etc , all have some bias when reporting the news.
EVERY news show answers to some corporate sponsors.

That is simply an explanation of why telling the truth is considered a sin today. The corporate sponsors want to make money and they have no values or priorities other than that. They can't have anyone out there telling the truth because the truth often hurts. God forbid reality offends one of their potential customers. No, no we can't can't have that. Corporations want to be everyone's best friend. There is no right and wrong in their eyes. There is only what pleases the ignorant masses that they are selling to.

This is really only one of the many reasons that lies, distortions and bullshit have become our primary means of communicating. The other culprits are duplicitous politicians and morally bankrupt lawyers. The new favorite tactic is the lie of omission. They will say something that is not technically a lie but they will intentionally leave out other facts thus leading people to draw a false conclusion.
