They're also meaningless from the standpoint that wars are primarily won through the air. We could wipe out a significant portion of a country's ground forces without ever sending in our own troops. That's basically what happen in Desert Storm.
thats not entirely true though....air superiority will ensure a tactical victory, but you cant have a complete victory, total domination of a nation, without troops on the ground.
the israelis had 100% air superiority in lebanon, and look what happened. they realised that without a sufficient ground force(which they opted not to use and basically just pulled out instead due to political pressure when they should have just done the job right once and for all) to mop up all resistance, then your enemies will continue to be active and the fighting will continue.
same with iraq and afghanistan- we have total air dominance, yet have we in any way achieved a 'victory'? did the constant aerial bombing of england produce a nazi victory?
air superiority is very important but it will only take you so far. it is only with masses of troops on the ground that total victory can be achieved.
