android tablet - if your wife is a geek.
surface - if your wife knows that windows is better than linux.
ipad - if your wife don't know shit in computers.

but in reality they all are the same. 8)

Had the same dilemma myself regarding my sister, but as others had stated, the ipad is pretty much the standard. My advice is to just take a day and go around with your wife and try the diffrent tablets out. My sis, ended up with the Sony Xperia S1 (an andriod tablet) as she is not and apple fan, and did not like the OS of the surface-(she believed it was still to clunky, and she got burned by microsoft with regards to the Zune player.

Anyhow, at the Sonystyle store, The xperia tablet is priced (16gig. Model) as much as the ipad mini, until christmas, and you get a free cover.

Hope this helps.

iPad.
1.) smooth GUI
2.) more apps
3.) better app versions
4.) no malware
5.) find my iPad
6.) apple care plus. Tech support and you can give it replaced for like 50 bucks or something. Women break shit.

the surface tablet is not selling well i would advise against it because microsoft might cancel it if sales do not increase in the long term, women love ipads because of the cool factor.

The Surface is a "me too" product.  Here's why: 1) MS is a software company; their one real hardware product is the Xbox.  They jumped into tablets because they saw the market (and money) running away without them and now they are crying "me too!" for attention. 2) It wasn't that long ago that MS execs were mocking the iPad and the idea of tablets as a fad that would soon fade into irrelevance.  When that didn't happen they were left grinding their teeth and feeling like losers because they neither saw nor were prepared for consumer demand for a well executed tablet.  Their idea of a tablet was the HP Slate.  Remember that?  If not, you are in good company.  the Slate came and went like a puff of smoke.  No one has one because no one wanted it: it was heavy, ugly and couldn't do much.  Epic fail.  ::)

The Surface is a very late effort to catch a train that has already left the station--and left MS behind.

More than likely, there is already a phone out that slots in to the back of a tablet screen that can be used both ways, thats probably the direction it will go

Hands down, the Samsung Google Nexus 10.

Best on the market atm, and reasonably priced.
