Title: Guess the bird's sex and come up with a name!
Post by: ~flower~ on March 20, 2008, 06:19:41 AM: 'dweetir' is going to get the dna sex test done today, I think results take a week or so?

So guess what sex 'dweetir' is and pick a corresponding name.

Please keep in mind that my companions get 'human' names, so names like Beaker or Featherbutt will not be considered!

Post by: Vet on March 20, 2008, 10:51:50 AM: To the average layperson, for all practical purposes, Sun conures are not sexually dimorphic, but to an experienced eye, they are just like Amazons (beak differences between males and females), African greys (females having silver tail bars), and Macaws (again beak/head structure differences) in that the males and the females have distinct physical characteristics that all pretty much hold true.

For me, its difficult to tell the difference between male and female sun conures until they are sexually mature. Some breeders say they can tell as early as 8 weeks, but honestly, i've never been able to see it, and I'll be the first to admit, that objectively, DNA sexing is the only way to positivily identify a birds sex, but even then I am aware of male birds that have been DNA sexed as male laying eggs. ;) Its very, very rare, but it does happen.

One of my technicians was a conure breeder and he showed me how to tell the difference with some of the birds that came into the hospital. He had close to 100% accuracy on determining the birds sex based on physical characteristics when compared to DNA sexing. Males tend to have less red on their face or they have a duller red color, the females will have more red coloring or brighter red when they are immature. As the birds reach sexual maturity the males will develop more red feathers on their head, cheeks, and neck. The females don't loose the red feathers, the males develop more red as feathers are replaced. Males also have a slightly heavier beak than the females, but its very, very subtle.

We have lots of foot/play toys also that will take a while to get to test out. And another funky hanging toy from that place that will go in at one time when I swap the cage toys around with some other cage toys I have. And I have 2 more natural perches coming, that are good for her feet and she can chew on. The wooden dowel one that comes with the cages should just be chucked. :P Boring and too round. She likes the rope one too you can see in the pic, that one can bend and you can make it go straight across, or in a u shape, and she can chew on it. Natural ones and ones that vary in diameter are good for their feet. And the flagstone rock perches too because they can stand on them if they want. Variations are good to keep the feet healthy.

And I think I have decided on Ronnie. Ronnie Dweetir Baconator. :)

So maybe someone.coughknny, can change the poll options. ::)

I vaguely remember my wife laughing about a woman named Skittles Mcsomethingortheother. I need to ask her if I'm remembering correctly if its just 5 AM and my brain is fried. She didn't spell it Skittles though, it was something like Scitlles or something messed up like that.

I do know I've heard stranger human names. Heck, I went to college with a woman named "Freedom", who was from Liberty, Missouri.

On the youtube site, you can watch it in higher h.264 video... it's much better than flash.

Google has a black bar to do wide screen formats, but in all honesty, they own youtube now and they are trying to phase out google video.

thanks, I tried google to see if if would be clearer. I use hotmail as my main email and it won't allow me to send vids, usually they are to large, how can I "shrink" them so I can email them? I have a gmail account too, maybe that will allow vids to be emailed?

No, she only does that when I get home or if she feels ignored and wants attention. So far she is not a horror of a screecher. I was told to expect that, that they will do it, it is a normal way of calling their flock, so if you can't deal with some screeching everyday, don't get a bird.

The sound on the video doesn't quite capture it though, ;D, in person it has more resonance (?) to it. ;D

She has done that before to that name and a similar sounding one I was considering. She hasn't reacted like that to any others. 8)

Birds poop many times an hour. They say you can try and potty train them but that isn't always successful or 100% all the time. She can poop and then poop again 5 mins later. Not like big dog pile poops, but still. :P I keep a towel for my lap and I am trying to get her to poop on a smaller towel, but so far no success. I do say the word poop when she does she may start associating it and we may make some progress someday.

I'm already thinking about a bigger cage, the one she has is fine because she does get a lot of time out of the cage, but we ( 8)) need more room for toys so I want something wider.

If/when I get a bigger one I will sell the other one most likely. I really like this cage and the way it's built and some of the features on it, so from that point it was good because I know what to look for in a cage now. Like what may be considered a small feature but I think is genius, is for the door there is this little piece of metal at the top of the door frame that just flips down, so even if you forget to slide the door latch to closed, this prevents the door from opening.

I was told if you get too big a cage and make it too fun then they don't have a reason to come out. ::)

I have heard of people that do that. They make it into an aviary and the birds can fly around.

Her wings will be kept clipped, so no flying. I can't remember if it was the girl at the store or the vet that told me this (Maybe Vet can comment) but I was told that Sun Conure's are distance flyers so letting them fly in a room can be dangerous for them because they would probably hit the walls. They aren't good short distance birds so don't stop quickly that well? I don't want her flying around with the dogs so that isn't an issue and I certainly don't want her crashing into walls. She will "fly" down from her play gym sometimes, both the one on her cage and the portable one. I have been in my room with her in the hall and then looked down and there she is at my feet. :D So now I try and look and make sure she is still on the play gym before I walk anywhere and don't step on her.

Yes, because I am so neat. ;D

In her cage or on her playgym stuff usually drops "down" so it's not too bad, but she will drop bits of food off the side of the playgym or stick her butt over the edge and poop. :P Those natural enzyme cleaners work fine on clean ups. Bird poop is still easier than a dog pile!

downstairs the dogs (meaning Tad) are there to get any of the food on the floor. And if her portable play gym is downstair on a chair and I have left a food dish on it, Addie and Briona will clean it out. >:(

It is bird safe, I went to "Western and Central New York's largest store dedicated exclusively to pet birds".

They had a a number of unweaned baby birds there. There was a macaw I believe (I don't remember the exact species) with a hatch date of 2/21 that looked like the most pitiful thing you ever did see! He looked like a 1/2 plucked turkey with BIG feet and he was making these "bleating" noises, you just wanted to comfort the ugly thing! Baby birds are ugly and sad looking without their feathers. :-\

The size of the new cage is 32 x 21 x ?, and the other one is 18 x 18 x ?, so yes more room especially width wise. I will clean up the other one and think about putting it on craigs list sometime. Green cheeked conures are smaller than Sun's and it would be perfect for one of them. 8)

No she sits on my hand in the kitchen sink under the water. She so far doesn't seem to be a bird that likes to play in a bowl of water, or water in the bottom of the sink, but just likes to sit under a warm shower of it. I have a filter on the kitchen faucet so it can be set to a shower like setting or the solid stream and I use the shower setting (not on full blast).

They say you can use a spray bottle but it should be more of a "misting" bottle or on a light misting setting, you don't want to be squirting the bird to where it fears it. Maybe I will get one for the summer if she likes to get "misted" sometimes.
