There is a reason they call Afghanistan the graveyard of empires.
The British, Greeks & Russians tried to do battle with Afghanistan and they all lost. Right after the mid 1800's, Afghanistan became a problem for any nation trying to wage battle against it.

So true. The problem with both of those wars are they are in effect civil wars. The same country is divided and you have to worry about civilians and collateral damage. You also have infiltrators that are agents for the other side. We could have crushed both those countries easily. When we fought Germany we didn't care about civilians. They were all our enemies. We reduced the entire city of Dresden Germany to ruins in one night. The only inherent limitation is what we don't do. This country is a sleeping giant that other countries like to kick and laugh that we don't do anything. Watch out when we wake up.

Indeed. They were going to follow up the bombing of Hiroshima with an immediate firebombing of the city. Just to make sure. This was eventually voted down because they wanted the results of the atomic bomb to speak for themselves.
Also, the third target set after Hiroshima and Nagasaki was Tokyo.

No one is denying our supremacy in conventional warfare (even if we include nuclear weapons). All that has been said is that this clearly doesn't apply to COIN operations where winning a population over is required (that means we cannot nuke them, as your previous post implies). I suggest the reason we keep losing these wars isn't due to overly strict roe (how strict were we in Fallujah?) but rather because no amount of military power can force an indigenous population to be friendly. Towards the end of the Bush administration we were spending close to 800 billion USD on defense (pentagon base budget plus some supplementary items), fighting poorly trained peasants that pay with their lives (rather than getting payed anything). This results in the best trained, most advanced force that literally has robots (UAV's) dropping missiles on people from the sky. Fucking ROBOTS! Despite this we can barely stabilize the place well enough for a managed withdrawal which is itself an admission that nation building is nigh impossible. Are you starting to comprehend the point you dastardly internet pseudointellectual you?

Their military isn't 1 billion enlisted, that's the population of their country.
At this point the Chinese lack any sort of serious logistical/transportation capabilities to sustain a large conflict let alone invade Taiwan.
The Chinese govt. is going to need that army to maintain control of the civilian population once the economic shit hits the fan.

Not like they were using Laos and Cambodia (where we couldnt follow officially due to the ROE) to move troops and munitions from North Vietnam and China. Also not like their headquarters and training facilities were in Cambodia. Clearly also werent fighting the NVA, just the VC.
Vietnam, technically, was a military success for the US, but a dismal political failure. The actual bodycounts (which is how we were guaging how the war was going), were in our favor, as were most of our military engagements. They simply did the right thing, didnt give up, waited us out - our own populous turned on the war, demanded it end, and we pulled out. They lost most of the battles, but won the war. We'd go in and take an objective, kill everyone there - only to clear out and let the NVA take it back over.
The way the Vietnam war was ran, was a massive clusterfuck.

I dunno. Im not really informed enough on their military to judge - but from what ive seen, I dont really think theyre a threat to us. (Militarily speaking)
If they actually get a missle to launch, and actually get one capable of hitting us, they may get taken more seriously. But in the civilized world, Nuke's really dont mean much anymore - anyone willing to launch, is willing to watch the whole world burn. No country in their right mind would launch a nuke - the moment that nuke is airborne, our nukes start flying - and everyone has a bad day.

Real question is will they hold that power as they relinquish economic superiority to the chinese over the next twenty years, we live in interesting times, China and Russia definatly starting to flex their muscles in an alliance of force that is weaker comparison to the NATO alliance, but grows with each conflict, three years ago Syria would have been toast by now.

The NVA was the major fighting force during the war, but that's not to say the V.C. were a bit player.
Either way, the V.C. were slaughtered during the Tet Offensive in 1968 and ceased to be a truly effective fighting force. The war shifted to more of a convential-style North-South engagement there-after with the NVA being the primary driver. That's a common misconception about the war, that there were peasants armed with BB-guns routing U.S./ARVN units all over the country, it wasn't the case at all.

Anyone with an analytical mind knows the military and the politicians wanted to see just how much damage these weapons could do to an actual city full of people. It is one of the darkest days in American history, certainly nothing to brag about. The only country in the world to drop nuclear bombs on a civilian population and now they dictate who can and cannot have nukes.
Back to Afghanistan, when th u.s. pulls out what was really accomplished? The Karzai government will have to form some kind of coalition government with the Taliban. That is a fact. The hated enemy will be part of the legitimate government and the US will have to sit across the table from them sooner or later. My head spins from all the aid we are going to give them for the next twenty or so years

But I never argued that the VC were winning conventional military battles against the U.S.; I said that they "beat us" and our superior military, which is still true in the ultimate sense because we were unable to achieve our essentially political goals which were the ostensible reason for our intervention (we didn't just go there to kill as many North Vietnamese as possible, after all). Take your example: the Tet Offensive was a military disaster for the VC yet ironically ended up being a propaganda victory for the North that fed a major backlash in the states and hastened our withdrawal.
I think these facts in conjunction with the results in Afghanistan still support my point that a military, no matter how strong, has serious limitations when it comes to these sorts of operations and that we can't just blame particular tactics, ROE, or what have you, for their failure.

Hindsight is 20/20. They would not have surrendered even under continued conventional attacks, that includes firebombings as well. It is certainly not "one of the darkest days in American history". Instead of firebombing every single city in the country 2x over we simply dropped 2 nuclear weapons on two cities. We didn't tap dance around, the war needed end, to do so you take the gloves off and use everything at your disposal to finish the war as quickly as possible. I believe that using those 2 bombs probably saved more lives than it took. Showing the weapon off to the Soviets and to let the world see American might didn't hurt either.
And the above is simply one mans opinion. But when you say"Well, the Japanese were finished, we didn't need the A-Bomb", you say so 60+ years after the fact. The worlds surveillance, communication and intelligence technology and capability was in the stone age compared to what we have now or even 20 years ago. Plus the Japanese only demonstrated during every battle that they would fight to death and never, ever surrender. That can't be over stated.

Oh, I'm not arguing those points, especially Afghanistan. The military is not a cure all when participating in global politics.
As for Vietnam, in the end, the North was very close to collapsing militarily. 20+ years of war will take its toll no matter who supports you. I would argue that after Tet, if LBJ didn't telegraph our withdrawal to the North and instead went on the attack without withdrawing American forces we would be having a much different conversation at this point. But that goes back to your point about politics and the military.

Tell me about Tet then, GX. I didn't know it was considered a failed offensive. I heard it demonstrated the ability of the NVA & VC to mobilize a nationwide attack and the failure of our intelligence to get a whiff of it. With all its associated issues like movement of munitions, extensive planning and communications, didn't it show the enemy to be a lot better organized than we gave them credit for? And us to be more poorly informed than we would have liked to believe?

Nice pontificating but I think it has only a tenuous connection to reality. How beneficial to the world economy in particular would an American collapse be? Was the crisis of 2009-2011 to everyone else's benefit?

All of this results in the best military on earth, including a navy larger by tonnage than the rest of the world combined (with over 2,300 ships), including 11 aircraft carriers (China has approximately 0, and that is not slated to change anytime soon).

We always knew how and where they were moving their supplies, we just couldnt do anything about it, as our hands were tied. We were not allowed (officially at least) to go into Laos and Cambodia, which are the 2 primary countries that NVA were using to move everything to South Vietnam.
The initial attacks stunned the US and South Vietnamese armies and took them by surprise, but most were quickly contained and beaten back, inflicting massive casualties on communist forces. During the Battle of Hue intense fighting lasted for a month and the NLF executed thousands of residents in the Massacre at Huế. Around the US combat base at Khe Sanh fighting continued for two more months. Although the offensive was a military defeat for the communists, it had a profound effect on the US government and shocked the US public, which had been led to believe by its political and military leaders that the communists were, due to previous defeats, incapable of launching such a massive effort.

As I understand it, they have a long-term plan to, but this involves getting a lot done before the actual harvesting begins (e.g., testing the relevant technology over and over again, getting a rover on the moon, and so forth). I should also add that the "China Rising" projections, besides depending on absolutely perfect outcomes for the Chinese, as I already said, also tend to project the worst for the U.S., e.g., U.S. growth never again rising above 3%, the U.S. being forced to cut military spending due to its inability to manage its finances (though that part may more or less happen) and so forth.

Hindsight is 20/20. They would not have surrendered even under continued conventional attacks, that includes firebombings as well. It is certainly not "one of the darkest days in American history". Instead of firebombing every single city in the country 2x over we simply dropped 2 nuclear weapons on two cities. We didn't tap dance around, the war needed end, to do so you take the gloves off and use everything at your disposal to finish the war as quickly as possible. I believe that using those 2 bombs probably saved more lives than it took. Showing the weapon off to the Soviets and to let the world see American might didn't hurt either.

Hypothesis: I hypothesize that the subject will be unable to think critically, providing no evidence for his conspiracy theory and displaying fundamentalist, cult-like thought patterns in response to basic questions about the theory in question.
STATUS: Hypothesis confirmed. Subject unable to provide (or even hint at, for that matter) a single piece of corroborating information for his conspiracy theory. Instead refers me in a general sense to wikipedia and to google. Suitably unimpressed. Peppers response with extremist thinking, attacking me for having an "indoctrinated worldview" despite his not having any idea what my worldview actually is, pretending to be victimized when all that has happened is that he has been queried about his worldview (see bolded segment for 'acting like a victim' behavior), dissociating himself from all further inquiry by pretending that he has no obligation to provide any hint of justification for his claims despite constantly rubbing those claims in others' faces and calling them "indoctrinated," "sheep," and so forth, and displaying zero ability to critically examine the asserted claims in light of his inability to muster any evidence for them.
Conclusion: Subject has been thoroughly owned. Pet conspiracy theory has had zero argument in its favor and thus until such argument can be provided, must be assumed to be false.

The British were isolated on their island, it wasn't like they were going to get invaded, Hitler abandoned Sea Lion before it ever got legs. Now the banking collapse was well into it's zenith when Obama was sworn in. Another fact that Obama haters don't like to talk about. The original Snake Eyes was the best. The white one who was part of cobra. I had so many of those, shitty thing was that their thumbs would fall off if you put the guns in their hands too many times. I still have a shitload of those things in my parents attic.

You're right, don't know how I missed that. There was a snake eyes that was all black and had goggles, made in 82 I think with the first ones. Then came the other one in like 85 that had the dark gray visor.
