Best new laptop?
« on: March 13, 2010, 04:36:39 PM »
I need a new laptop.  Nothing fancy, all I use it for is browsing, bit of Office, video streaming, iTunes, maybe a bit of Photoshop.  Not much else.  I just want something reliable, that doesn't cost the earth.

My current machine is a Samsung V25 I bought 7 years ago.  Never had a problem with it, and only need a new one cos the 30Gb hard drive is full and the battery won't charge any more.

Suggestions?

P.S. I use it for GetBig - BB related.

I'm in exactly the same situation as you.

For me it's a choice between this upcoming lappie or a macbook pro:

I'm tired of moving my main work PC around the house, thinking about a higher end laptop myself.  Anyone recommend something awesome in the $1500 range?

Kind of difficult to compare laptops when you use just one, but I do use a MacBook Pro and have been totally satisfied with it since day one about five years ago.

The only advantage I can think of for going with a PC is that I think that the PC has more compatible programs than the Mac has .... but I'm not even sure about that.

The Mac is more 'well thought out' .... so those who use both, tell me.

My kids can brake anything, but so far the Soney lap tops are hanging strong.

I just got a new MacBook, they are pretty nice.  2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU and 4 GB of RAM for $1100.  The battery is great too, it lasts for about six hours.

Not looking for a Mac, I'm far too used to PC stuff now.

Not the "Best new laptop", but I just bought my wife a Compaq CQ60-615DX. It's a low end model.  Less than $400 at Best Buy but it'll do what you need.

We got my mother-in-law an Acer last year, which seems OK, but they seem to be too new to know how they last long term.

Best of both worlds by running OSX on a less expensive laptop.
Apple excel at design and marketing but their hardware is rarely cutting edge.

Sony VPCF115FM/B.  I bought one about a month ago.  Only drawback are low battery life and slower hard drive.  Other than that it rocks.  I use photoshop, premiere for HD etc and it's perfect.
