Title: Need a new phone, HELP (Sorry, OFF TOPIC AGAIN) (No Homo/Negro)
Post by: Roger Bacon on November 27, 2011, 09:40:39 AM
I have a blackberry, contract is up in May.  I need a new phone, what should I get?  I'm not into phones, just need an Alarm Clock/Voice Communication.  Don't care about anything else.

Someone told me something about some companies that will buy out your current contract?  Currently with Sprint.

Wouldn't mind messing with some of those apps, what phone does that?

You're with Sprint... You can get some Android or an iPhone... Go play with them (no homo) and figure out which one you like.

For me, most Android phones are kind of large and the iphone just seems to be a better form factor.

There is an LG gX2 that is freaking awesome though, but I think it's only on T-Mobile.

If you want something that cheap with the necessities that you listed, why not just get a pre-paid phone?

yeah the new phones are getting bigger and bigger, but they are too bulky and shit. I have a Galaxy S, it's dated now as far as performance, but it's still a sick phone and it's the perfect size, and it's cool looking  IMO. The Galaxy S II is out and it's crazy...but it's just a big fkng screen, no style at all. I was at Wal-Mart yesterday, and they are giving $100 gift cards with every smartphone purchase..and the GalaxyII is $100....so I could get it for free basically. But i just don't like the looks of it.

But I'm staying with the galaxy regardless...the AMOLED display is insane...nothing else comes close.

A buddy of mine got it, you're right a bit bulky and the screen is a bit large. Might be uncomfortable to carry around in your pocket at work or the gym. But overall it's a nice phone.

I have the exact same problem... I've tried a lot of phones over the past year or so (We have a "phone bank" for our mobile division, so I can check out phones and test them any time I want) and they are all just massive. I think my hands are pretty average size... not tiny, but not gargantuan either and this year, almost every android phone I've held is freaking HUGE.

Phones today are almost all touch screens, so for me, you should be able to reach all the way across the phone with your thumb to type one handed if need be.

You can't do that with most Android phones today.

I would never type one handed...I'd be afraid to drop my phone. I don't have my phone in a case, whats the point of having this sleek badass phone if you are gonna wrap it in some wonky case ....so i'm really careful with it. it still looks perfect and ive had it a year and a half

I have the encase case.

Doesn't look like more than a bumper, but I can see your point.

Get the Galaxy Nexus when it comes out. I know you didn't ask for a super technical phone, but the Andriod platform has something for everyone.

It's handy as hell having all your Google account into tied to your phone too. My wife's calendar syncs on my phone so I know where she is and what she's got planned. We can video conference, I can connect to my computer and download or stream movies, it's replaced my GPS and I can do a million other things. Granted, I'm probably one of the biggest nerds on this site and definitely the biggest Android fanboy. I still think they're awesome phones.

I'm surprised none of yous have mentioned the iphone? I'm not a big fan of apple products myself, but I dont think the droid platform could compete with the OS system.

The only thing I don't like about the Android GPS is that it's "in the cloud".

If you're away from Cell Reception, you're going to want something that has all of the info within itself. That's why I bought the Magellan app for my iPhone. It's like 3GB of data, but it's got it all right there and if you don't have a cell tower, you can still get where you want to go.

P.I.P. I worked for Verizon in my last job.  From what you've written it sounds like you would not like a smartphone.  Smartphones require data packs which is an additional $29.99 per month on top of your phonebill for most companies. So if you're sure you don't want one then go with a basic phone.

If you want to store music, watch tv, pay bills, GPS, watch porn, take awesome pictures, take awesome videos, have an app market of 100,000 plus apps from games to thinks that make your life easier then get a smartphone....I heard there's an app that turns your phone into a hot pair of lips of your choice and gives you the best blowie ever and it even swallows.

Just upgrade to a better blackberry if you don't want all the bells and whistles. I have a blackberry and my son has an HTC. I'm switching to his type of phone.

I just upgraded my phone last week, picked up the Motorola Atrix 2 running Android, I absolutely love it.... 4G, dual core processor, gorilla glass, 4.3" inch qhd screen which is sooooooo crisp, free voice turn by turn gps navigation, and over 600,000 apps on the android market!

I'm not sure what you're talking about. You can use Wifi and network data for the GPS to improve accuracy, but it does have a true GPS built into it. In fact, the Galaxy Nexus even has a god damn barometer in it for even more accurate GPS! How nerdy is that!? 8)

I also edited my gps.conf file so it locks on flawlessly. I've yet to see another phone or even standalone GPS match my phone. And BIG ACH, I have the Motorola Atrix as well, except I have CyanogenMod7 on it with a custom kernel. It's blazing fast. And Google Navigation is an absolutely awesome app as well. Any time I travel I use it religiously. Being able to find directions to places and reviews for hotels and restaurants is sick.

I have a few phones right now and usually buy a phone every few months. It's an expensive habit.

Turn off your wifi and turn off your cell reception... Then try to get directions somewhere.

It doesn't work... That's what I'm talking about.

If you were in some remote area and needed directions, the android phones can't help you because the information to get you to where you want to go is on the Internet, not on the phone.

It still works. It's a real GPS so it's not network or Wifi dependent. What you may be getting confused with is the fact that in order for you to be able to navigate and get directions, you'll need some form of data connectivity. You can download offline maps just like GPS devices for this purpose and avoid needing data all together. I have a 6GB data plan though so that's not a concern.

Google Maps also lets you pre-cache areas too. If you're venturing somewhere and don't want to put a 1GB offline map on your phone, you can simply long-press an area on the map and it'll download it. When I'm not in the country and I'm at a hotel with Wifi, I pre-cache the shit out of where I'm travelling to keep data roaming to a minimum. 8)

No. I know the difference. The directions is what I was referring to.

I was unaware of the caching ability in google navigation.

Again. I have no beef with the android platform minus the occasional memory issue. I loved the GX2. It was a great phone.

The rest of the androids that I've used leave something to be desired.

Ah yeah, didn't know you were getting to that at first. Some of the phones are meant for different markets though. There's one for everyone.

Myself, I always go for the next-gen phones. I know there are comparable phones to the Galaxy Nexus coming out, but that'll attract the most third party developers so it's the route I'm going this time. Although I love HTC phones and kind of want one of the newer ones.

apktop.com is great for this. Granted, I buy all the apps that I use. When I help friends setup their phone and they're too cheap, I just download them from here.

Rooting is helpful mostly if you're a nerd. I need root access for the modifications I do, like editing the .host file to remove advertisements and small things like that. 9/10 people don't need to root. The Android platform is way better than anything Apple has ever done. They offer a walled garden which is fine and dandy for the idiots, but for most people you need more than what Apple offers.

In the Android Market you'll find that there aren't as many polished apps like with the Apple App Store, but they're often free or more powerful than the ones Apple provides or authorizes. Apple also prohibits anything that competes with what they offer, so fuck them. They're literally stopping you from having the best apps available because their revenue is more important... fuck them. I want what's best for ME! If I'm paying half a grand for a phone, I want to do whatever the fuck I want with it. And that's why I love Google so much.

Anyway i have an HTC desire, like it a lot. Great video quality and massive screen which helps me out with my business.

I have seen the latest Samsung and Sony's and they are both look very good as well. For what i need i'm not too fussed i think all of those three would be great.

I got the Samsung note. It's a 5.3 inch phone that is basically an enlarged Galaxy S2 with a stylus (which you can never use if you hate them). I've got GH hands so the phone's size is perfectly fine, I can type single handed.

I've been preaching Android to IOS fans for the past 24 months and I've managed to convert some  ;D

I agree with Dustin, Jailbreaking is called that cause IOS is so controlled and limited that changing a theme needs hacking. Google nexus on the other hand is a let down for me for a couple of reasons, two that come to mind are that the camera is lame and it lacks expandable memory.

That's true, which is why the Android Marketplace has all of the root kits in it and shit... Trojans on the marketplace that people download thinking they are safe when they are not.

That hasn't happened to Apple yet and they are by far, the largest cell phone market.

As some of my guys in our mobile division say... The Android Marketplace is like the wild wild west. Anything goes.
