Jaywalkers in China are to be named, shamed and slapped with an instant SMS fine.

And it’s all thanks to cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

In the southeastern city of Shenzhen, police have set up AI-powered boards by crossings.

If you jaywalk, a CCTV camera will scan your face and flash it up on the huge screens for all to see, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, there are now plans to ping offenders’ phones with quick-fire fines as soon as they violate the grim rule.

The AI company behind the billboards, Intellifusion, is in talks with mobile phone networks and local social media platforms to enforce the new system.

The firm is reportedly speaking with WeChat — China’s all-encompassing messaging app, which locals use for everything from work and personal chat to mobile payments and blogging — and Sina Weibo, the country’s answer to Twitter.

WeChat currently boasts over 1 billion users, compared with China’s 1.3 billion population.

“Jaywalking has always been an issue in China,” Wang Jun, Intellifusion’s director of marketing solutions, told SCMP. “A combination of technology and psychology … can greatly reduce instances of jaywalking and will prevent repeat offenses.”

In the 10 months to February this year, a whopping 13,930 jaywalkers had their mugs displayed on the screen at one busy crossing, Shenzhen police announced last month.

The move is part of a bigger surveillance push in China to track local citizens.

And it’s being powered by a network of 170 million CCTV cameras, many of which are fitted with AI, including face-recognition tech.

These security cams are already being used to regulate traffic and pinpoint drivers who break the rules.

An estimated 400 million more security cams will be installed in the next three years, according to a recent BBC report.

Facial recognition is already being used in the US and we will see even more of this big brother police state/social credit nightmare in other countries in the future, including the US. You'll probably hear the usual "If you have nothing to hide, what are you afraid of?" to justify these measures, along with a liberal sprinkling of "it's for your own good, we're doing this to protect you" and a steady diet of "look how convenient it is for you!".

Watchdog says FBI has access to about 640M photographs

A government watchdog says the FBI has access to about 640 million photographs — including from driver’s licenses, passports and mugshots — that can be searched using facial recognition technology.

The figure reflects how the technology is becoming an increasingly powerful law enforcement tool, but is also stirring fears about the potential for authorities to intrude on the lives of Americans. It was reported by the Government Accountability Office at a congressional hearing in which both Democrats and Republicans raised questions about the use of the technology.

US facial recognition will cover 97 percent of departing airline passengers within four years

The Department of Homeland Security says it expects to use facial recognition technology on 97 percent of departing passengers within the next four years. The system, which involves photographing passengers before they board their flight, first started rolling out in 2017, and was operational in 15 US airports as of the end of 2018.

The facial recognition system works by photographing passengers at their departure gate. It then cross-references this photograph against a library populated with faces images from visa and passport applications, as well as those taken by border agents when foreigners enter the country.

I've never believed that.  It's a terrible argument by those who make it.  You don't have to justify not wanting your privacy violated.
