Does lifting weights make you lose height?

We know almost all the old time bodybuilders have lost a ton of height (Arnold, Lou, etc). Wrestlers who did weights have also lost a lot of height (Hogan, Superstar Billy Graham, etc). So, does lifting heavy weights prematurely compress the discs in the spine, resulting in premature height loss? When I used to lift heavy weights, I always felt more compressed. Does anyone know?

I've lost about an inch since my last high school sports physical my senior year.

compressed disks in my back and neck, degenerated disk(s) in neck, ect...

powerlifting/squatting takes a toll.

but atleast if you dont have barrel gut, and are lean you will seem taller than you are.

I think this is absolutely true. I def think that I'm a few cm shorter than when I started lifting.

squats i think in particualr.

its not the only thing thatll shrink, though. ;D

i dont do deadlifts or squats


the only compression would be during seated press and standing curls

i think it would be ok

I feel compacted sometimes so make a point of hanging off a chin up bar for as long as possible.

Think it helps because I always feel slightly better afterwards. I am six foot and want to grow not shrink.

my spine feels much better since giving up squats and deads


didnt have any problems, but since quitting i noticed i feel much better and it doesnt pop like crazy when washing my back

I noticed my shoes got very loose after the first few years of training, so now I wear an extra pair of socks.

Doesn't even have to be "slipped discs" (FYI that's a very outdated term...discs don't really slip, they bulge, protrude, sequester, herniate.)

Most important is degenerative disc disease brought on by heavy compressive loads and poor biomechanics. You I'll absolutely lose height by the continual compression of these discs. Anyone who lifts big weight NEEDS some form of decompression therapy, it's crucial.

You might lose 1-2# over the course of a lifetime, not like half a foot

During times i do squats and deads i shrink an inch at max.
You can also do some kind of spinal streching at the end of workouts.
