Buckethead! :P

John paul jones, mostly due to his legacy and such.
However the best as a musician I think is Jaco.
And the bass player I'd wanna be is james jamerson, dude was in the perfect time, with the perfect job, with the perfect lines.

That psychedelic shit at 3:00. 8) Great drummer too btw.

There are many well-known virtuosos from jazz and rock scene, who always sound entertaining.
For me it was these guys -
Stanley Clarke 80's jazz-rock/pop albums.
Billy Sheehan solo albums were nice.
Shawn Malone from Cynic and Gordian Knot.
Steve DiGiorgio for work with Schuldiner.
Some of Brian Bromberg.
-
Nikki Monninger.
-
Victor Wooten
-
Sir Paul
and here's an example of some pretty cool bass playing

Steve Harris - Iron Maiden
Joey DeMaio - ManOwaR

Miroslav Vitous
Steve Swallow
Early, early Jaco (though he died young, he was already going downhill)
Stanley Clarke (also his early work)
Double-bass is a such nobler instrument then electric bass though.
-
Lakers.
-
Geezer Butler. Really listen to ozzy era Black Sabbath. He's flying all over the place on the bass.

No mention of Les Claypool, or Flea for that matter? What the hell is wrong with you people?

Probably the most creative and melodic bass lines in all of pop music right here...
-
Iron man.
Geezer knows how to fill the gaps and doesn't just mimic the rhythm guitar or drums. Very few bass players can really play and give bass lines character.
-
1- victor wooten
2- jaco pastorius
3- John Taylor
-
Easy for me.
The great Steve Harris (for the Maiden fans out there).
And Les Claypool of course (did anyone even mention him...jesus...)
-
Yeah, liked Claypool until I figured out he was a stoner trying to copy Tony Levin. ;D
-
only thing impressive during that solo was the downing of the JD.
-
Mike watt.

(http://image.blog.livedoor.jp/quu_2004/fadb9287.jpg) Mark King. That guy can play some deep locker room armpit funk, sing, and chew gum all at the same time... :o I have so many others. Dont care for pick players.

Awesome, Abbey Road was such a good album.

Andy Fraser (No homo)
Free, IMO, the most underrated band, ever. They were the best of the best:

John paul jones, mostly due to his legacy and such.

Jaco's son Felix plays a mean base too. Saw him play with Jeff Coffin at a friend's music school.

Bass players are just failed guitarists
-
Flea from the chilli peppers brah
-
Jack Bruce.

Bass players are just failed guitarists
most of them. Some are extremely obnoxious artists too, just trying to be weird and alternative.
Me, I consider myself the GLUE that holds the band together.
I'm better than 99% of the guitarists I play with, on guitar. But my role is so much more. I keep the drummer calm. I control dynamics. I give the guitarist room to shine and quickly take it away if he gets too obnoxious. My little pauses and slide-in notes tell the singer what to do.
I also book/own PA so I make rules. :) I could play lead guitar 7 nights a week, but then I'd have a hard time dealing with a douche-bag rhythm section. I get to control more when I'm on bass. I create dynamics in every band... Or I replace the musicians lol.

Billy Sheehan
Stanley Clarke
Les Claypool
Geezer Butler
Michael Anthony
To name a few, gotta think about it! Gotta put Paul McCartney on there!

And then one of the guys, who have been inspiration for all modern bass players, and with one nice song. It starts quite slowly, so be patient:
-
Bass players are just failed guitarists
Of course, if you say so:
-
-
Esperanza Spalding
-
Esperanza Spalding
Why does it not surprise me your pick would be a jazz player. ;D
-
Gene Simmons of course..
