Tom Varga-Middleweight....AZ maybe?

Can you name at least one of the guys standing here waiting for the call outs?

Looks like I see Bob Reis in the background.........

Is the guy in the blue trunks waiting for a call out Larry Jackson, the guy in the bottom pic showing abs looks like the wrestler Rick Rude.
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: Glowboy on December 11, 2005, 08:23:19 AM
Waiting for callouts: Larry Jackson, Bob Reis, Manny Perry, and Fred Shandor.

Crownshep, I think the bodybuilder in the "old shot" is Larry Gordon.
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: Glowboy on December 11, 2005, 08:25:15 AM
In the callouts, if not Manny Perry, could it be Sam Sanchez.

You guys are good! I was there and have a hard time recalling the names.

Thanks for the memory jolt.

This is an old one taken at the start of his competitive days while he was in the Army .....

Glowboy - you are correct on Jackson, Reis, and Perry but I am not sure about Shandor.

Yea, Crownship, that is Larry Gordon. What is Larry doing these days?

619 - Arizona is correct but that is Yokely. Sorry but I forget his first name. I saw him enter the Nationals once but he didn't place real high and I never saw him compete again.

This was taken the year that the USA was held at the Sand's Hotel in Las Vegas. I don't reacall the year.

I think that Peter and the Gold's guys promoted it. Mr T and other celebrities were in the audiance. This was one of the better athletes in the contest but I forget how he placed.

Alan Ichinose won that  year.

Just goes to show you how much things have changed since then.

Stuntmovie, thank you for posting the great photos.  I think the bodybuilder displaying the impressive single bicep/abominal pose is  Don Peterson.  I remember he was a short class competitor and had really outstanding pectoral development.

The photo of the guys in street clothes look like Doc Neely on the right and Dave Rogers on the left.

Ya know, all this time I did not realize that that was a picture of James Hampton and I got to admit that he is one of the most impressive bodybuilders I've seen in the past ten years. Very solid, symmetrical and no protruding gut.

How is Hampton doing today? Thanks for clarifying that, Bix.

Yep, 619, that is Bev Francis and Billy Grant.

Glow, you are definitely right on DOc Neely and Dave Rogers. The original photo includes the rest of Dave's family but I cropped it unless I get permission to post it.

And I think you are right about Don Peterson too. Since  you are getting these names correct fairly easy, I'll do my best to post some difficult ones from here on out.

Another Hampton shot.  In my opinion, he turned out to be one  of the best bodybuilders of all time.

That should start a major argument.

It appears to me that James just took his time and got better and better and better like that Energizer bunny. Did he ever win any major titles?

Title: Re: Who's Shoes?

Everyone can name two but who is the third? He did win a few small contests but even Glowboy will fail this one.

That doesn't look like Eddie.  And I don't think that is is Manny.  The middle guy (blond) looks like an old friend of mine Robert Armbrust

Long while back.......

That is of course Richard Baldwin, who used to train in Florida with the late inaugural Ms. America (1980) winner Laura Combes, and they also competed in mixed pairs contests.

Laura's degree of muscularity was considered shocking in the late 70's and early 80's.  Does anyone remember seeing her featured on the TV show Real People in 1979?  Yet Laura herself made the prophetic statement that women would come after her who would make her "look like a kid."

Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: stuntmovie on December 12, 2005, 12:23:19 AM
Thanks, Dan-O. Never had the honor of meeting Combes but I do remember her and how good she was back then.

Here's a couple that might pose some difficulties ......

I think I posted them earlier but this is another appropriate occasion. How about the bodybuilder's name, approximate date, and location. Here's a hint: He won the Mr International (IFBB) within a year of taking this picture.

Not sure Stunt but kinda looks like Dave Dupre?
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: Glowboy on December 12, 2005, 06:52:11 AM
Thanks, Stuntmovie.  Yeah, you posted some tough ones this time.  I think that is Dave Dupree in the background of the group of four pumping up photo.  I see the great natural bodybuilder Eddie Love seated in the background of the most muscular photo.  Nice photo of Richard Baldwin and Billy Smith.

You have a great and unique collection of photos.  I appreciate you posting them.  Got some thinking to do on some of those other bodybuilders.
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: Glowboy on December 12, 2005, 06:55:38 AM
Stuntmovie, one more guess.  The two bodybuilders with Bill Grant look like Marty and Pete Vranicar.  Almost didn't recognize Marty V. without the mustache.
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: Dan-O on December 12, 2005, 07:23:00 AM

Is that Jon Aranita?

Although I would have no idea about when & where as I was never a part of the west coast scene way back when.  I would guess early 80's.
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: Glowboy on December 12, 2005, 09:42:17 AM
Stuntmovie, those other two bodybuilders in the group of four pumping up might be Robert Smith and Joe Nazario.

The bodybuilder posing the most muscular (with Eddie Love seated in the background) looks like Mike Arnold.

The bodybuilder accompanying Arnold and Dave Draper looks a bit like Frank Pantoja.

It has been a lot of years ago that I have even thought of those names so my memory is probably a little rusty.  But, that is the best effort it wants to conjure up.  Thanks for the posting the photos.  They really do bring back many memories.

Oh yeah, I am thinking the Mr. International bodybuilder is Andreas Cahling.  I do not know the location.
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: stuntmovie on December 12, 2005, 10:50:36 AM
Lord and GLowboy, You guys are correct on Dave Dupree in both cases. Anyone know how to contact him?

Correct on Billy Smith and Richard Baldwin too.

Negative on Jon Aranita, Dan-O.

Glowboy, not sure about RObert Smith but that is definitely NOT Joe Nazario who was a great friend many years ago before we lost contact.

Yes on Eddie Love and not sure about Mike Arnold.

The International winner is not Andreas. It is Bob Birdsong who was definitely one solid mass of muscle back then.

As a side, it is interesting to note that most of the guys back then stayed in great and solid shape all year round and a small waist was critical for winning contests. When Bob won the International, he was exceptionally great.

The young guy with Arnold and Dave in the trees is a frend of mine who used to train with Ed Corney at Ed's Gym  in Fremont, California. He won a few contests but don't ask me which ones because I don't remember. He and Arnold hung out for a week of adventures while Arnold was stuck in Hawaii until he managed to get a return flight home... long story there.

Glow, I believe you are correct about the Vranicar brothers too. Whatever happened to them?
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?

What is he doing now?

Billy Smith is running a nutrition company-it was posted on the gossip board-there is a link for it somewhere.

Robby guest posed at the LA Open in 1989-and Arnold showed up- Bill Smith was robbed of a first place finish by some of the worst judging I have ever seen. He dominated the HVY WT's , just as Tom Wiggins dominated the LT HVY's, and the both were given second place. Jeff Snead-not a bad BBer won and should have NEVER beaten Bill Smith.

On a side note Bill Smith worked the counter for Gold's Gym Venice back then..........
Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: stuntmovie on December 12, 2005, 11:14:51 AM
Below - one hell of a great guy. I believe that only he and Tony Pierson were the two bodybuilders to ever win the Jr USA and Jr America the same years. Could be wrong though. Pictures were taken off season if I recall right.

Stopped by Gold's in Santa Monica once to pick Ernie up and take him out to lunch and found him just about passed out on the floor claiming that he still had to train.

So Pete comes over and tells me to watch him close because he just finished one hell of a workout and ended up doing legs with Platz and was a little "fuzzed up" in the head at present and still thought that he just got to the gym for a workout. Then just about that time while I was helping Ernie get up from the floor, another "fuzzed up" competitor walked out of the gym right in front of a moving car and breaks his leg. Those low carb days were tuff to live through.

Joe Nazzario-Mr International.....the only two Mr Internatinals I know are him and Andreas Cahling.

BTW-Cahling  was working out at my gym in Solana Beach in the mid 90's and he looked great. Then he stopped weight training and only did yoga-dropped a lot of weight-looked to be about 160-170 tops, maybe less.

Cahlig has started selling all his clothes-not just posng trunks-on EBAY.......will post a link later.....

Whatever happened to Judy? She went to Las Vegas about five years ago and has not been heard from since!

Here's a shot of Dennis _________ and Larry ____________ who have been posting subjects on a number of occasions here.

Left the blanks so that you "newbies" can make a guess.

If I recall right, I took this shot in the mid 60's at the Embassy Hotel Theatre during one of the Cal contests. This was probably the same night that John COrvello beat Bill  ___?____ for the overall Cal title.

Those were the glory days of this crazy sport. Nothing big but everything great!

The contact sheet is Ernie Santiago.  Billy Smith started Nutrtionanylisis(?) with Neal Spruce back in the early 90's.  Something happened and they split apart.  Nutritionanyalisis(?) was then changed to APEX.  Which has made Neal many and many more millions of dollar.  Last time I knew where Billy was he was operating his own nutrition program out of Gold's Venice where he had an office.  He was a huge guy.

I used to work out with Neal Spruce's old roommate in 1983- a former pro football player (USFL) named  Kenny McGinnity. Neal and Kenny were living in San Jose and training at the California Gym-which was the major hardcore gym down there- and Neal was waiting tables at night so he could train during the day. Neal also owned his own home which is one reason he would not move down to Venice-which Neal eventually did do.

Neal hosted a Saturday afternoon "muscle movie" which came on once a week for a very small, very minor San Jose TV station.  Neal was very close to going pro in the early 80's........finishing in the top 5 at the USA and Nationals numerous times.......Last time I saw neal was in the Cal in 1989 or 1990-he did not place.

FLex. that is Larry Gordon. Glowboy ID'd him correctly earlier.

I'm sorry but I don't recognize Rick Rude in any of the photos I took.

Here's another Larry Gordon shot taken at the "Mr America Parade" when Ken Sprague and Gold's Gym promoted it in Santa Monica. That was one heck of an unreal weekend.

Title: Re: Who's Shoes?
Post by: stuntmovie on December 12, 2005, 11:14:04 PM
The Mr America Parade....... I think this was the same weekend when Mae West handed out the overall winner's trophy to Dave Johns at the Santa Monica Civic.

Her eyesight was not too good so Burt Goodrich escorted her onstage. She was just a little old lady while waiting backstage but when she walked out front of that curtain she definitely was Mae West. An amazing and immediate transformation.

She invented that persona/character completely.

The only other person I've seen pull that kind of transformation off completely was Paul Rubens/Pee Wee Herman. Another show business genius.

I'm surprised that no one has identified Rory Leidelmeyer  yet.

Here's another Mr America Parade shot.

I think that Ken Sprague was the only contest promoter who actually used a real live symphony orchestra for the contestants' music. It was a high school symphony orchestra but I do recall them being pretty darn good.

He even had a special SM newspaper (special edition) published for the event and every judge in attendance got paid in accordance with the number of miles they traveled to show up at the contest.

I sure do remember that, Only.

Be honest here ........ Would you agree when me when I say that BODYBUILDING and the SPORT of Bodybuilding and the whole damn shebang including the gyms - was something completely and totally different and lots more fun and reputable back in the 70's?

It kind of all made a change for the WORSE when the gyms got bought out by BIG BUSINESS and when the idea of PERSONAL TRAINERS came into existance. I do recall those first few years when you had to attend a "school" to get "licensed" to become a trainer so you could train your friends in the gym.

That "trainer" was one of the most obnoxious SOB's I've ever met and she flunked all the competitive bodybuilders who took her course.  And she kept on telling me all sorts of bullshit about how she could train a Bodybuilding Champion in half the time that I could.

I think she had a track background and ................ ahhh, forget it.

Back in the old days, eveyone in the gym helped eveyone else for free and never had their paws out for $60 plus an hour. In my humble opinion, the PT business is one of the biggest scams since the days of Snake Oil Salesmen, and we still got a lot of them around too.

OK, back to some photos. Here's a relatively new one. Easy to ID.

Easy to ID.

I agree with you Stunt.

PT is a scam & trainers should not be making as much as some are.

I do believe some people need a full time work out partner to crack a whip on them because they have no drive.

Out here in so cal....I know plenty of trainers that make $75-$100 per session & most of it is just counting reps & rotating a schedule.

hahahaha........Reminds me of Rick Stephenson's GF/wife at San Diego Gold's.

Her name is Agnetha-a real hot chick from Sweden. Anyway Rick, who was the main manager of Gold's back then, steered some clients to her for personal training....lol.....

Agnetha did not know a bicep from a latsisimus dorsi....and she would basically just try to encourage people as she trained them....the funniest thing was when she would count reps with her Swedish accent....NOW...that's a vvvonnne....and a vvvTvvvwwwoo.....and a vvvvthrrreeee.....funny as shit. Complete idiot when it came to weight training though-but good eye candy ;D

Absolutely Stunt.  I loved it back then to compared nowadays.  Nearly everything I know or learned I learned by simply asking Louie, Franco, Dennis, Waller, Tony Pearson and many others.  They would let me work in and tell me how to do it while I was with them.  I'll always remember Louie telling me to do barbell curls with your elbows alway in and you hands wider than your elbows.  I leanred more doing the exercises with the people who really knew how to train than anyone PT can learn from a book.  I am still surprised that people all the time ask me questions on how to do a certain exercise or how to do this or how to do that.  And I look the way I do.  But at least my mind is the same.

I hate it when I hear how much a PT will make and then watch what they do.  I ran a club back in the late 70's and all we had was an index card with the name and all the contact info on it.  No computers, no nothing.  Like I've said on here before, I'll never forget the board behind the front counter at World's Gym and seeing Arnold's (among others) in big writing telling them they are late with their dues.  It was $150 a year back then with no money dues.  Very simple.  Joe didn't let anyone slide.  Those were the days.

Some of the military guys with great potential can diet for five weeks and win state contests or place well fairly easily. Here are a couple of guys who were just starting with great potential.

Air Force, this guy saw a notice in the base gym, entered the contest the next week, won it, and was never heard from again.

Rules, that is a good friend of mine doing the side tricep shot by the name of Chad. He movied many years ago but I usually contact him during the Christmas holidays so I will ask him how long he was training before that picture was taken.

He was/is one hell of a down to earth guy and won every contest he ever entered and never could believe that he actually won it . We sent him to compete in a state contest in Las Vegas a while back and he won that one too plus the best poser trophy. He couldn't believe that either.

One of his friends in the AF wrote a great article on him and his low keyed personality which I sent to some of the magazines but none ever published it. Great article of an exceptionally great person and if I can find it, I'll post it on here.

Here's another shot of one of the Marines we met while giving a seminar on base. He was a little guy on the base football team who was a hard hitter and wanted to gain some size so he could put some hurting on the opposing teams, so we set him up on a program and checked him out a couple of months later. It was like night and day so I encouraged him to diet down a bit and enter a local contest scheduled six weeks later.

He did and won and eventually moved to LA to train at Gold's and was known as the Mayor of Gold's Gym because of his southern ways and willingness to help anyone in the gym train harder.

This all happened a long time ago when Peter and the partners were just getting organized on 2nd in Santa Monica.

Not a real great photograph, but he was one of the hard trainers at GOld's Santa Monica who should also get some recognition.

Recognize either one?

The girl is Alison who lived on the North Shore in Hawaii. She was a nurse out there and helped a lot of people who had lots of problems. An exceptionally great lady who actively competed for about 5 years. A great pioneer in ladies' bodybuilding.

I forget the year this picture was taken but the location is the old pool area at Caesars Las Vegas during the NPC Nationals. Jeff and Cory won the couples competition that year and Belnap won the overall men's.

Always yelling Marco Polo, they were asked to leave the pool.

This was taken at Caesars pool during a well deserved rest after taking Timmy Belnap shopping for fud. I think that Puffed Rice cakes were brand new on the market that year and we had to find the ones with the lowest carbs.

I guess none of you recall the days in Santa Monica when the House of Pancakes was mobbed with competitors  before the nationals prejudging. You'd have to fight to find a table and get to the contest on time.

And how about Craig Core?

A few years back there was a lot of talk about his bright future in the world of bodybuilding, but then some problems arose in England and he disappeared from the scene for a year or so.

Did he ever return and, if so, how is he doing now?

Thats a dolphin.  We had them in the waves in Manhattan too.  There are some really nice posters they sell with a surfer on a wave with 4 or 5 dolphins right alongside him.

I showed that picture to a surfer friend along time ago & he said immediately..."thats a dolphin".  He said the shape of the dorsal fin gives it away.

I told him.....if I was in the water....I'd be screaming...."SHARK"

OK, thanks on the fish ID.

Back in the early 60's, they held bodybuilding contests in an outdoor theater a bit north of the basketball courts at Venice Beach. These events were held on early Saturday afternoons without a prejudging session and they were run pretty damn well.

There would always be about 8 to 10 pretty impressive contestants along with a couple of very impressive stand-outs.

The contest was always held on a stage full of props from the play that was appearing there that week. These were unsanctioned events.

I do recall one contestant in particular who was ultra ripped and had the opportunity to discuss his training routine and diet immediately after he won the contest.

He told me that he dieted all year long and ate only tuna fish and uncooked vegetables along with a small portion of rice each week.

But his main "secret" was how he prepared his tuna at each and every meal.

ANd it was time to eat so he proceeded to "prepare a meal" right there in front of me.

He opened a can of tuna (water based was not available then) and pulled out a lady's nylon sock. Then he emptied the can of tuna into the stocking and proceeded to twist the sock to remove every last drop of oil and moisture from the tuna fish.

When he removed the tuna from the sock, it resembled fresh, dried out sawdust. Then he dumped it on some rice he had in a paper cup and sat back to enjoy his meal.

He claimed that he ate that way every day and that and his training kept him ripped to the max. It worked well cause he did win a good number of LA events in those early days.

I wish I could recall him name. ANy help?

Here's an unrelated photo ......... Merry Christmas to one and all ........................ ..

Weider probably does this for the same reason my Unlce puts almost everything in his wifes name.  Just in case a lawsuit or bankruptcy happens the good stuff doesn't get touched.

Wow....I never thought of that as a reason....Smart move on Weider's part..........I thought that was odd as hell when I saw how much real estate Arnie and Betty had together............but what you said explains it all.............. ;D
