In Western Aus there's still a sense of fronteir to some degree. Start driving inland from pretty much anywhere and in 2 hours you can be in the middle of nowhere. I've never done it.
Outlook. Even working class Aussies tend to be more worldly than the Americans, with some exceptions of course. They're nationalistic here too, but in nowhere near the same degree and there's a national self deprication which you never find in American society.
Religion is presented much more politely if it's presented at all. I swear to god, the only zealots I have met have been Jehova's at my door - and they were from the US!
The Aussies tend to have an even greater sense of entitlement tho, if you can beleive it. Racism is much more out in the open here, although it is less organized (no KKK etc). The shopping hours are joke (I think that's WA only tho). The people can be a little more prickley but there's no have a nice day bs either.
It's more like the UK but with great weather and less moping around, with a good dose of fronteir manliness. That's WA - I can't speak on the rest.

Not being sensitive. I have only ever lived in Sydney. Obviously there are differences between Syd and Perth, but like i said, you have lived in both the US and Aus, so i will take your word for it. ;)
