Tea party activists are divided roughly into two camps, according to a new POLITICO/TargetPoint poll: one that’s libertarian-minded and largely indifferent to hot-button values issues and another that’s culturally conservative and equally concerned about social and fiscal issues.

The survey, an exit poll conducted Thursday by Edison Research at the massive Tax Day protest on the National Mall, found that the attendees were largely hostile to President Barack Obama and the national Democratic Party — three-quarters believe the president “is pursuing a socialist agenda.”

Yet they aren’t enamored of the Republican Party as an alternative. Overall, three out of four tea party attendees said they were “scared about the direction” of the country and “want to send a message to both political parties.”

The results, however, suggest a distinct fault line that runs through the tea party activist base, characterized by two wings led by the politicians who ranked highest when respondents were asked who “best exemplifies the goals of the tea party movement” — former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), a former GOP presidential candidate.

Palin, who topped the list with 15 percent, speaks for the 43 percent of those polled expressing the distinctly conservative view that government does too much, while also saying that it needs to promote traditional values.

Paul’s thinking is reflected by an almost identical 42 percent who said government does too much but should not try to promote any particular set of values — the hallmarks of libertarians. He came in second to Palin with 12 percent.

When asked to choose from a list of candidates for president in 2012, Palin and Paul also finished one-two — with Palin at 15 percent and Paul at 14 percent.

In general, those who turned out for the April 15 event tended to be less culturally conservative than national Republicans.

Asked to rate their level of anger about 22 issues on a scale of one (not angry at all) to five (extremely angry), the issue that drew the most anger: the growing national debt. The least: courts granting same-sex couples the right to marry. Twenty-four percent said they’re “not at all” upset about gay marriage.

Paul performed best among those who don’t think government should promote any particular set of values, but Palin dominated among the family values set. Of Palin voters, 59 percent said they were either very or extremely angry about same-sex marriage. Among Paul voters, the number was 34 percent. Half of Palin’s tea party supporters attend weekly religious services; a quarter of Paul voters do.

Ron Paul and Sarah Palin are very different on the 'conservative scale'.

She supported capping emissions.
She supported the Bailout for banks.
She supported Amnesty.
She spent a ton of $ as governor - wasteful spending.

These are things that dems do.  Ron Paul is against all of these things.

No surprise that liberals are trying to discredit this movement.  The Republican Party shouldn't be too comfortable either.

Sarah endorsed Rand Paul for the the Kentucky Senate race.

This is another non-story.  I dont like that Sarah has stood up for McCain, but she did what she had to do.

The Tea Party movement is only going to grow as the govt is getting worse and worse by the day.

What I think is funny is that all these left wingers kept saying that the tea party would run third party candidates, instead we are seeing the fool ass republicans getting their ass handed to them, like Crist, and being cry babies and attempting to run as a third pary candidate. Its the RHINOS who will destroy the republican party and help democrats ,which is what they are anyway-democrats.

The face of your tea party is Pro-RINO and supporting them as much as possible.

What does that tell you?

part of her supporting Rand Paul was cozying up to Ron Paul revolution voters, about 5 min before she declared herself the leader of the tea party movement.

I dont think Palin is the face of any party.I think the left wing media WANTS her to be and paints her as such, but I dont think most conservatives really care what she says other then she is entertaining to listen to.Its like me saying the face of democrats is Ed Shultz or Chris Mathews.

if palin isn't the face of the tea party, then who is?

FOX and msn paint her as the leader - and she's the headline speaker at every event.

Plus in that inaugural event, she declared herself the leader of the tea party.

She is a private citizen who rallies people, is a media person, and gets people like yourself, lurker, blacken, benny, and TAs' panties all in a wad.

People are pissed off and are in the streets not because of Palin, but because of the govt and bs it is doing.

240 - you watch WWWAAAYYYY too much tv and buy into the msnbc hype and drivel and dont realize that most people going to these rallies dont need ron paul or sarah palin to get them pissed off.

The face of the tea party movement is obama, pelosi, geithner, graham, and all the rinos, the state govt hacks, etc.  They are the best advertisement for the tea party, not ron paul or sarah palin.

She is a good speaker, she is entertaining to listen to and she was the vice presidential candidate.I know your consumed by Palin and she is in your head all day long but your wrong, there is no leader of this movement. She is no more the leader then Bachman,or Beck or Brightbart or anyone else.

I watch fox every day, as do most tea partiers.

every night, it's all about palin.  She gets way more airtime than any other tea party voice, with bachman a distant second.

this is undeniable.  And airtime = political viability, we saw that in 2008.  In 2006 and 2007, it was the RINOs all over FOX, and FOX supported them in the primaries over the quiet non-obxosious 'true' repubs.

And they'll do it again.  Steele and Romney and Palin talking about tea party ideals?  Are you FCKING HIGH?  They're as RINO as they come.

Please show me the clip because I remember otherwise.  Surely every other palin moment is on youtube so this should be too.

Palin has said numerous times that there is no leader of the tea pary movement.

. We Don't Need a Leader
"The tea-party movement has no leader, and ... neither did the American Revolution," thundered talk-radio host Phil Valentine, who spoke before Palin at the gala dinner. Leaving aside poor old General Washington, if there was one thing all tea partiers could agree upon it was that no one is their leader. And that was a condition Palin was happy to encourage. "This is about the people," she said. "It isn't about any king or queen of a tea party and it's a lot more than any one charismatic guy with a teleprompter."

Bettina Bibiano, a 47-year-old filmmaker from Los Angeles, said the tea-party movement doesn't need an iconic Obama-like figure. "It's hard for us to unify behind any one person," she explained. "We're not a cult."

The tea parties have no leader.

Then you best be getting one.  Pronto.  One that actually believes in the tea party ideals and reflects it in their actions.  That way you can send little Carbiou Barbie on her way to hang out with the RINOS that she lovesssss to smooze up to.

Then you might have a chance.

ANYONE HAVE PROOF THAT PALIN EVER DECLARED HERSELF LEADER OF THE TEA PARTY?
