First, the woman needs to move to a more affordable community.  Second, it just amazes me how the us gov't can go all over the world spending billions of dollars helping other people when we still have people here that need help.

""I didn't think this would happen to me. It's just something that I don't think that people think is going to happen to them is what it amounts to. It happens very quickly, too.""

that says it all; she didnt "think about it", here is the result.

we're giving $12,000,000,000 per month to iraq.

Yes, we're borrowing twelve billion per month - from China using our roads as collateral - to pay for Iraq's reconstruction.  By the way, Iraq had a $30 billion surplus last year - they can't find ways to spend their $, it just sits there.

twelve billion every month.  Please don't bitch when you 401k devalues, or social security funding isn't there when you reach 65.  Bush borrowed $5 trillion dollars in 7 years, more than all other presidents combined.

Oh, and mcCain says he isn't going to change it.  Ta-ta!

it is sad, but there is some irony here, she's a former loan processor that was laid off...it's not like her job moved overseas like so many in this area...i wonder what kind of loans she processed, mortgage?

feel bad for the dogs, i'm sure they're going to bake in that car this summer with just the windows cracked while she's working...

definitely not ideal but better than a cardboard box, personally i think i'd sell the car and buy a bus trip East and start over.

When I first moved to Hawaii there was a homeless lady who hung out near the zoo in Kapiolani Park.  She had a grocery basket full with clothes and trash.  I always thought that if you were going to be homeless, Hawaii would be the best place.  Obviously other cities around the country thought so too.  What cities like Chicago did was they wrangled up some homeless people and gave them a one way ticket to Hawaii.  This was there way of getting rid of the homeless in their cities.  I found that to be a great idea.  I can't remember what happened but I know our mayor or was a feisty old dude (Mayor Fasi) did something like ship them back.  Anyway, that old lady died in the early 90's and when they checked her basket she had over $600,000 in uncashed checks to her from some kind of inheritance she had.  She just like being homeless.  And in Hawaii it is called being "houseless" cause Hawaii is our home.

Exactly.  With an $8/hr job plus social security she could easily find an inexpensive apartment in many communities.  Instead, she chooses to stay in California and sleep in a car?  ::)

Also, the article said prior to being laid off feom a decent job she had been spending 3/4 of her income on housing?  Perhaps if she had chosen more modest accomodations she could have built up some savings and avoided this situation?

Yes I am that stupid.  Some people choose to do what they do.  There was a big black guy who also lived out of his shopping cart and hung around the front of where my gym was going up.  He would always be reading the stock market section.  Always.  I always thought he was nuts.  I gave him shoes and shirts all the time and he never would change his clothes.  He later died.  The newspaper and city made a big deal out of this.  They found out this guy was some accountant for some Fortune 500 companies out of Chicago and had been in a bitter divorce and lost everything.  He ended up homeless with nothing.  When he died the city made a headstone and gave him a burial spot.  I understand and know many of these people have some mental problems but I also know that some of these people chose to live that way.  Many of them are fully able to work and live a life but they are comfortable with living the way they do.  But I also know that many of them (most of them) would rather live a normal life and have a roof over there heads.  But hard times force them to live like they do.  I have spent many many hours feeding homeless people in Hawaii and in Virginia.  I love it when I used to go out on Thanksgiving and feed the homeless.  I feel bad for them.

The the remark 240 made about how the US dumps so much money into Irag and other countries.  That pisses me off.  I could care less about the other countries.  I truly think we should take care of the Americans first.  Not the people who just live here but the ones who were born here and have worked here, gone to school here and have served their country.  Take care care of our own.  (great campaign slogan)

A part-time job making $8.00 per hour isn't shit. That's enough money for gas for the week.

Actually...

As I spent time in the trailer park, both living then later owning properties -

I've seen people get out of rehab, jail, divorce, whatever, and turn things around.  You can get an efficiency - 1 BR with a bed and tv and bathroom - for $150 a week around here with no problem, and $100 a week if you don't mind bugs.

You go to Labor pool, AbleBody, ManPower, whatever your local day labor place is.  You make $10 an hour, you might be digging ditches, you might be getting walmart shopping carts, who knows.  But you can make $80 per day.  That's $400 per week you can earn, just working 5 days and no nights or weekends.  Spend 100 on rent, and 100 on bus/food, and you put away $200 per wk.

Go down to your local community college on your first day off.  Sign up.  You'll get grants and loans out the ass.  They'll pay for all your classes and you'll have a few grand left over per semester to get yourself a better place to stay, better car, better everything.

I was 18 and dead broke living in the trailer park, playing basketball every day, no plan for college, no car, no job, etc.  No one in my family on either side has ever finished college, and only a few ever walked the high school stage.  I got a job at the grocery store (walked 2 miles to work in FL heat until I could afford a bike, rode till I could afford a shitty car with no A/C).  I got a car, applied at college, got loans, got books, kept working.  Today I'm an MBA with a teaching degree and multiple computer certifications, I work 5 hours a day from home in my PJs while playing with my son, and I play in a band at night for fun.  I do what I want in life now, because I worked so hard as a youth.  My brother and sister are still poor, wallowing in the same mess I came from.

You CAN get ahead in America, you just have to bust your ass and not be stupid with your $.

Agreed.

At some point the "American dream" changed from becoming better because of working harder to living in a million dollar home and driving your bimmer to your $40,000 a year job.  People have an amazing ability to hide from things that should be painfully obvious.

This is going on all over the country. We are witnessing record high unemployment, with the highest inflation since the great depression. We have seen entire industries fold over the last eight years. We are not in good times. I think that is what this article is about.

Props to 240 for busting his ass to get where he's at in life. But, it would be very difficult to do that in today's world.

Our economy is in deep crap, stagflation. Things will get much worse in the next few years. gas is shot up, the financials and housing are getting crushed. Next is the retail sector. We can barely service our deficit anymore and people are now living on credit which will blow up in their faces. Many people just seem to be unable to live within their means. People used to save to buy things. Now it's credit for even small items. This woman should have lived in a cheaper area and saved for retirement. Her part of Cali is very expensive. She's 67. Did she think working forever to just make bills was a long term solution?

I invest ( quite a bit in precious metals the next few years) and live modestly. In the end who wants so much stress later on in life.

I feel bad for those dogs..cooped up in the car all day. hopefully things changed for her. with three kids im sure the majority of her earnings went to supporting them. yes maybe she made unwise decisions with her finances in that she didnt have some type of nest egg, but with raising three kids may not allow for that.
and for the 19 year old posting on this thread..seriously stfu, you have no idea what youre talking about, pay a mortgage, student loans and financially support yourself before you give advice on life

LIES LIES LIES...YOU ARE STILL WITH YOUR MUM....

Here is a little math for you...Work for ten dollars per hour for forty hours per week you get four hundred dollars...RIGHT!!!!...Where do you work where taxes are not taken out??? More like work forty hours per week and get 300 dollars if you are lucky. Take 250 dollars of that and maybe you can find a efficiency... now try and survive on 50 bucks per week. IN the case of this woman who is now homeless and 65 college is out of the question. BTW...I don't know what school you are attending that is so generous with grants, scholarships and federal loans...In case you are a 75 year old man living back in the days of WHEN...grants, scholarships and loans are just about a thing of the past. I had to help my sister pay for her nephew to go to college simply because the government grants and scholarships that he received on top of the bank loans was insufficient.... GREED has taken over college...even local and community colleges are expensive,  and they know there are no jobs available for those who graduate...at least not at a pay scale that is livable, so they are trying to make all of their money off of the enrollees. Soon everyone will be pretending to be a Mexican just to get a job.

BTW you have the same mentality as this woman...thinking that you will always be able to get over and that nothing will happen to you...you are the prime candidate for everything to happen top you and when it does just remember your comments about her

What's going on today is everyone wants to live beyond their means.  Everyone wants to be their own little millionaire.  Compare the average lifestyles today to those of 20 or 30 years ago.  Did productivity and output really rise that much, or did people stop saving and start borrowing?

America is a sick society. the West is rotten at its core. it has abandoned the wishes of Allah (Go) in order to let homosexuals run free and women try to take the places of men, something they are not capable of ever doing.

Western Democracy has failed. The economy has failed in America. Personal happiness has not happened and the gays and women have too much power.
I genuinely do believe that the West could save itself by embracing Islam and stopping the lunacy.

You said we have record high unemployment and the highest inflation since the great depression.  Two widely incorrect statements.  I told you to check the 70s and early 80's so you can see your errors.

Wages have not kept up with the rising cost of living. Minimum wage in the 80's was $3.35 per hour, in the late 80's it was raised to $4.25 per hour. I could be wrong, but believe I'm right. You could rent a decent apartment for $250.00 per month back in late 80's.

Up until last year minimum wage was $5.25 per hour. To get an apartment at $250.00 per month in the 80's would cost you today about $500.00 to $850.00 per month depending on what area of the country you lived in. I'm not even going to go into the cost of everything else.

What's going on today is much different from the 70's and 80's.

ugh.   You're flat out wrong.  Why won't won't you admit your statements were factually wrong?  Why are you using minimum wage as a basis for your argument.  These days the only people making min wage are illegal immigrants and high school kids.  Hell, I worked at sports authority in HS and made $8.50 an hour in 2000.  You're also referring to federal min wage which was 5.15 while states liek FL and NY have erstate min wage.

No I'm not wrong.

The working wage has not kept up with the rising cost of living. What part of that do you not understand? How old are 25? You need to learn simple arithmetic.

we're giving $12,000,000,000 per month to iraq.

Ta-ta!

I know man and it makes me sick, my 401K lost $3,500 last quarter!  Everything you said is true.  And people wanna bash the dems.  Like 240 said McCain wants to keep everything the same??  What is the absolute worst part though is they are throwing that money in Iraq away, NOTHING has changed there and it NEVER will.  What a freeking mess, we will be in a deep depression if things keep going "the same"  So dont vote for the dems cause you think they will tax you, you wont have a job so you wont have to worry about that.

You are wrong.  You said unemployment is at record highs and inflation is near great depression levels.  Both WRONG.  Stop basing your argument on the min wage.  Its not the "working" wage.  Less than 2% of americans earn min wage.  Over 50% of that is people 16-24 years old (people in school)  Yes i'm 25 and I hope your not older than me.

Don't argue with this guy Justin.  You're a self made guy.  He doesn't think people like you exist anymore.

You are getting dumber every post you make.  You might as well tell me to go to bed again, cause you haven't been able to debate the topic.  Where's your degree from?

What would you like to debate? You trying debate something you know nothing about.

I've got a degree in economics and we're talking about the economy.  Reading comprehension?

No one goes wanting in this country without really trying. Our poorest are our fattest, and each has more cars, electronics, and essential brand-name urban wear/bling than the average African has food. Fuck the homeless.

And the dogs'll be fine, as soon as she sets them free.

Exactly.  This is the reason we sit around and bitch about our foreign doctor, the foreign engineer that took our job, and the foreigner that took our (insert highly skilled position).  The sense of entitlement in America is saddening.  The "American dream" is as alive as ever, it is just no longer Americans that are willing to do the work in achieving it.

There is a great story in one of Richard Feynman's books.  He liked to have cab drivers drive him into the "heart" of the city.  They'd pick him up at a large physicist's convention and assume he would rather go to a "nice" part of town.  One particular trip involved a cab driver that lived in a particularly bad part of town.  They drove to his neighborhood and talked about some of the people there.  The cabbie pointed out one individual in a small shack who's son was in an American medical school.  THAT is what the American dream is about.
The cabbie had a dream of opening a business.  (I don't remember what type).  His business plan?  He saved his money to buy lottery tickets.  As soon as he won the lotto, he was going to start up his business......

You do not have a degree in economics. You can't even calculate wages to inflation. ::)

You obviously don't have a college degree, but i do have a BS in Economics from UF.   You used a horrible example.  Its a simple calculation, but a useless one.   Why can't you understand this?

Justin, I respect your positive attitude. However, reality is, it's a tough job market and economy right now. Gas prices and food prices are at record highs. Millions of Americans have lost their homes and jobs due to very challenging economic conditions. It's not going to get better anytime soon.

Why are the same pathetic mutherfockers at the same offramps and intersections, day after day, week after week, month after month - sometimes years! - BEGGING? Yet ten feet away, an illegal is SELLING something to make ends meet.

Better question. Why does America enable this:

We were talking about making a living on a low income. That part you didn't understand.

There are people who's lives aren't turning to shit.  What are they doing differently?

Who was?  The title of the thread is "Is this what America is coming to"  You were talking about the overall health of the economy.  As I stated before less than 2% of Americans earn min wage and out of that more than 50 % are age 16-24.  So you made this whole thread to talk about how less than 1% of this country is having problems living in this economy.   Nice try.

You're right, I agree with. But you can't say the cost of gas, food and the massive amounts of job losses in this country hasn't affected many American family's.

That is just it.
Low incomes suck, the minimum wage may as well be $0.  You can't function and thrive on 40 hours a week at $6 an hour.

Thankfully there are thousands of technical schools offering flexible night classes.  Programs that cannot legally discriminate because of race, ethnicity, sex, or ugliness.   Less than 2 years in these programs can put ANYONE in a position to make upwards of $70 an hour in a variety of positions.

The average ultrasound Tech in Santa Barbara makes $61,000 a year.  The higher end is over $100,000 a year.
Americans are getting older, fatter, and more sedentary.  ANY medical position is going to be as secure of a job as you're going to find for the rest of this lady's life.

I disagree with you here.

There ARE jobs for college grads.  Not as sexy as they used to be, but you can still make a good living with a degree.  And if you go to college right, and go for the SKILLSET and not just a piece of paper, you'll have plenty of options when you graduate.  The world is more competitive, but some industries will never go away.

Inspirational!
I thought you said your bro was a pharmacists?

He was.  Then he shot a guy who tried to rob his pharmacy and then quit and moved.  Now he's bouncing around mgmt positions, just getting by.  Fcked up his head and derailed him bigtime.

I didn't know all that about you, nice work 240.

thanks man.  Life is about being happy, living comfy, and making good lives for your babies.  In 3 years when the rugrat starts school, I will either tackle law school or start a media company.  Until then, these are seriously the best days I've ever had :)
