Wow! Thats crazy! Not very safety minded! Is this a gym???
Anyway, I have never trained barefoot, but I don't see any reason to do anything special.

I usually squat barefooted and at time with sandals. Get a better feel and grip with the toes, but than again I also surf (since I was a little kid) so going barefooted comes natural with me. Foot/toe gripping can be important in squatting. Should get a better flex/stretch to the movement too. My regular workouts are barefooted or sandals or flip-flops.
Some guy's ware martial arts slippers or wrestler shoes when doing leg work. A good friend of mine started wearing his old army Airborne boots and say they are the best for serious squatting. Olympic shoes have raised heels for better leverage/balance when squatting. Seen some guy's wear regular work boots. All depends what you feel best doing.
Just to note; some wear shoes when doing calf exercises, which can limit the full effect of that exercise. Try barefooted calf raises for that better feel , grip and stretch to the movement. Can help the front of the calf also. If doing a set of calf raises, at the end of the set hold the position of a full stretch (bottom) between those sets as you pause for the next set. In other words, don't leave the block, machine, etc between sets......just hold the stretch. Some successful BB'ers have suggested taking 30 to 45 seconds break between each set of any calf exercise. Good Luck.

lol Wes Iam serious! ??? only thing the facility has a decent squat rack ! foot wear is not allowed due to lack of civic sense among some folks. :-X

I know people that squat and deadlift barefooted, for reps, heaviest sets always seem to find them wearing some sort of footwear.......on to your question, I don't think you need to do any special moves for your ankle, worst case if you're scared maybe you can get some of those powerlifting ankle brace sock looking things?

I always felt more stable wearing olympic weightlifting shoes while doing heavy squats.
Deadlifts i always prefer to be barefoot or just in socks.

Great advice,a lot of guys today do not know this.
I used to wear gymnastic slippers or karate shoes, wrestling shoes,or just socks when doing deads.

Wow!!
That`s crazy, and very dangerous as far as dropping a 45 pounder on your bare foot.
I`d find a new gym ASAP.

Unless your wearing steelies i doubt any shoe (and its contents) will put up much battle with a 20kg /45Lb disc.
a low heal is better for posture and good posture is very very useful for heavy squatting. the higher the heel the more distorting forces are transmitted up to the pelvis. However before going for barefooted lifting one should redevelope the skil of walking barefooted first - not always easy out of home or in a cold wet climate but it good good for the archs - the one between heel and ball of foot and the one between the big and the small toe.

barefoot anything is stupid shit as far as i'm concerned. i see people doing this or wearing the foot condoms. i'm a little more than ready to see this trend die.

E squat and deadlift barefoot for over 10 years. It's not a trend just feel good.
