if you have a power rack , donkey raises, probably as good or better than standing raises.

Calves grow if they have good genetics to grow, otherwise if they have high soleus insertions then you are fucked basically.  I have a friend and he trains his calves so hard but they are terrible.  He has black man calves and yes he is black.  Mine are bigger than his and I train them less but I have a low soleus insertion.

Yes sometimes I am in pain after wearing high heels and can really feel it in my calves the next day.

not saying mine are big, but training them makes a difference. If I don't train calves I look like a chicken :D

I don't train at home but one-legged calf raises, high reps, add some weight (hold progressively heavier things) when it gets easy.
