Santa Monica beaches and parks have too many people working out
« on: December 31, 2012, 02:33:49 PM »
Way to go. People are complaining that Santa Monica has too many people trying to get in shape.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2255025/Santa-Monica-residents-complain-sea-fitness-fanatics-clogging-parks.html

Physical fitness is a way of life on the beautiful beachfront oasis of Santa Monica. From sunrise to sunset, there's huffing and puffing in the city's parks as trainers put their students through the paces of every form of exercise imaginable. All along the 420 acres of greenery paralleling the Pacific Ocean are groups of a dozen or more people furiously pumping iron, doing sit-ups, stepping on and off little benches and stretching on mats. Some flex their muscles with weight machines tied by big rubber bands to pretty much anything that's anchored to the ground.

'It's starting to look like a 24-Hour Fitness gym out there,' complained Johnny Gray, an assistant track coach at UCLA and former Olympic runner who says he's often forced to navigate around weight machines, barbells and other exercise impediments as he runs.

In recent years, fitness classes have become as ubiquitous in Santa Monica's signature Palisades Park as dog walkers and senior citizens playing shuffleboard.  Karen Ginsberg, the city's director of community and cultural services, said other park users are complaining about fitness enthusiasts not only blocking pedestrian walkways but also making too much noise, killing the park's grass with their weights and damaging its trees and benches with all the exercise gadgets they connect to them.

'Some people have also expressed concerns about people operating a business on city land and putting the city at risk of liability because they aren't carrying insurance,' she said. So now the City Council is considering requiring that fitness trainers who conduct workouts in Santa Monica's parks and on its beaches pay an annual $100 fee and turn over 15 percent of their gross revenues to the city.

The council was to take up the issue of regulating fitness trainers this month, but that's now been pushed back to at least March. Meantime, Ginsberg said city officials are looking at what restrictions they might put on the use of weights, bands and other equipment.
Although classes offering everything from fitness training to yoga to meditation can be found at several city parks and all over Santa Monica's beaches, Palisades Park, with its stunning ocean views, is by far the most popular place.

As a result, city officials are considering limiting exercise class sizes there to no more than two students per trainer. Under the proposal being considered, other venues could still accommodate the larger groups as long as trainers pay the fees and provide proof of insurance.
The trainers respond that, like any responsible business operators, many already are insured and also know CPR. They also point out that they currently pay the city for business licenses and police-issued permits to hold their classes in the park. Although they don't have to pay rent to anyone, they believe that's enough overhead.

'I could easily go back indoors but that's what I wanted to get away from,' said Ruben Lawrence, who has been offering boxing and fitness training classes at Palisades and other parks for six years. 'I wanted to provide these programs to the masses at affordable rates to the community in a place people enjoy.'

They are going to tax, fee and nickel and dime people as much as possible.  Beach tags are coming soon.

Cali has done everything possible to chase out businesses.  In a few years there will only be very rich and very poor people there.  I'm glad I moved out of that fucking socialist state years ago.

You have to pay a tax to do a push up in a public park? Isn't working out something to be encouraged? No good deed will go unpunished.

these hyperfeminzed men and women in society look down upon working out and being healthy, last thing the establishment wants is a mass of society to reason and use critical thinking on their own with superbly in shape bodies, they will levy a 20,000$ a year fee on all trainers with the taxation of a trainers cash payments, and if they dont pay up, they will be thrown in LA county jail, then sent to prison like everyone else in LA who doesnt have money and a high powered lawyer. These trainers will be prosecuted for tresspassing, loitering, failure to pay income tax, and many other charges..........which at the santa monica court and LAX courthouse, a sentence of 16 months in California state penetentiary will be handed down.

CA a notorious prison state? Hardly, the prison/justice system here is a fricking revolving door where the most one would do is about 50-60 percent of a sentence. A lot of stupid laws, yes. Not business friendly, yes. Hell even violent multiple felons get let out with regularity

Ya this^^^ Its bad enough if you have some douche bag in the gym screaming doing barbell curls in the squat rack. Now if you take a vacation to go to the beach, you have to deal with these people screaming flipping tires and shit on the beach.

Same thing happening on the Gold Coast in Oz - so many people working out along the beach and board walk, not just Ozzies, but lots of immigrants now moving there from San Fran, LA, and Las Vegas. Good for watching chicks though as they are pretty fit over there.

Depending on the the number of people the trainer is training, I don't have a problem with this. I've seen fitness "boot camp" people and smaller Crossfit trainers take over prime areas of city parks for their business a number of times a week, they should contribute something for that.

We tax street vendors that use the public areas for their place of business, why not fitness trainers.

Put a cap on it, say under 10 people at a time, you're exempt from the tax.

there is a new craze out there called "BOOT CAMP TRAINING" lots of x-marine dude or military dudes get a group of clients and they have no studio or gym to work their clients at, so they train them at the beach.

Its strange that santa monica would complain since they have training stations all long the walk ways up the beach

Who woudnt be upset,
you go to the beach to get you a tan on and relax a bit  after a massive Chest workout just up the street at GOLDS GYM and you get 30 fat fucks and an ex-G.I. Joe with a HardOn to blow his Whistle ever 5 seconds

The problem is that there are literally 20 trainers out on certain beaches all at the same time with 10 to 30 people. That's a lot of fukcing people.  If it was a free type service they were providing than that would be easier to swallow. But these are capitalists using public spaces and becoming a nuisance or at the very least have the potential to be a nuisance. This isn't a health issue. These people are doing it to make money. At least when the skateboarderss took over certain areas around city buildings and became a nuisance, they weren't making money off it.
