Socialism. International market prices for a barrel of crudel is pretty much the same for everyone. It's taxes that jack up the price. The average tax rate in the U.S. which includes Federal, State and Local is about 20%. When you add in County and local taxes, and the ever present "hidden" fees, it's closer to 28%. And I believe that is way too much since they do absolutely nothing to bring that gallon of gas into your gas tank and considering the average profit margin for oil companies is 9% (profit margin for MicroSoft is around 33%). In Europe it's much more depending on the country. In Italy it's about 58% and in Britain it's hovering at 64%. So rounding off a gallon of gas in Britain at $8/gallon, $5.12 goes to the government.
All those give away programs aren't cheap. So when people take about free this or free that; for instance "free health care" -- there's no such thing. Someone is paying for it. And don't ever think it's the government. The government can pay for and give anybody anything simply because they have nothing to give. Whatever they give to one person they've taken from someone else.
