Which physique do you prefer?
Please try not to let your biases prevent you from objectively judging the physiques in question here.
This IS a serious question. Arnold's reputation shouldn't play a role in determining who has the more competitive physique.

Why did you use the pictures you did for Arnold? Those look to be about the best shots of Frank I have ever seen. Those are def not pictures that show Arnold in his best shape.

Both have amazing physiques. Hard to say who's more competitive.

Standarts and drugs have changed since Arnold ruled the bodybuilding world. Now a guy that would win 30 years ago can barely get to the Olympia. But nonetheless Arnold would stay on top could he compete today.

If i had a goal for arm size this would be it.

frank. arnold had some poses he looked amazing in, but some he didn't look good in at all. mcgrath, though small, is more complete. and you can all just cram it if you're going to respond with "i guess that's why he won seven olympias you're an idiot lol" and whatnot.

exactly, bodybuilding today is not like it was 40 yrs ago. You cannot win today with only the front double biceps, side chest, and most muscular.

that was my point. I'm not really sure why he called me a fool. Arnold was great for his time, but he's too small and imbalanced to compete with today's top pros. Arnold is like a lighter version of Gunter (with even smaller legs). How many shows has Gunter won?

The only picture where Arnold looks better is the side chest because way back in the day they, being the collective of competetive bodybuilders at that time, posed it differently in a way which I feel is much better than how they do today.

arnold didnt have to have a great back or 32" quads 30 years ago, they werent the standards and the drugs have taken the competitors to a whole new level. Its unfair to compare the standards of today to those of over 30 years ago

That's right- check out the lack of taper on Arnold as compared with Mentzer- likewise with Gunter.
The two have very similiar structures. Flat tris in the side chest, cut quads but not so great sweep, high peaked biceps, massive chests, wide waists, sloping delts in the crab most muscular.
No, Arnold didn't need 32" quads 30 years ago, and it probably is unfair to compare the bodybuilders across different eras. However, a raw comparison can still be drawn- ignoring all 'could have should have would haves'

In my opinion, setting bias aside, I still gotta go with Arnold. His physique is very pleasing to look at. Frank's is like, "Man! That guy is jacked!" while Arnold's is like, "Man! That's what I wanna look like!"

id say about 34", he was wide across the hips but flat, if he had narrow hips then he could have had 31-32

I think a better comparison would have been Frank vs Sergio. But we all know that Sergio blows him out of the water and that Arnold already beat Sergio. This should end this debate.

The pictures of Arnold that are routinely used to show how good he was are either black and white, close up, or just overall better quality and so they heavily work in his favour. Seems as though some aren't quick to point that out though (intentionally I'm sure).

Matt, don't compare Frank to Sergio like you did before. Frank as big as he is doesn't have the shape Sergio had.

the mags (FLEX) ;D love to flood articles about Arnold chest...etc. all his great front shots, and they are great. But just because they ignore the back, doesnt mean you should forget about it...and if you do take a look at the back...it's NOT as good as the front.
All in all, both have similarities, and both have flaws.
It's almost like saying do you like the 70's Mustang? or the 2002 Edition?
They're both good, I just tend to stay away from the Arnold nuthuggers.
People tend to forget that ACTING made ARNOLD, not bodybuilding. People tend confuse his popularity, with his physique. (they're 2 different things)
I just think as a consequence of his acting shedding light on the bodybuilding world in the late 70's, the Weiders saw a great opportunity and started to put arnold left and right in the mags. issue after issue, even to this day he has some article related to him each month.
Just alot of well-thought marketing, so when you think of Arnold as a bodybuilder, figure out how much he really amounts to if he didnt become a hollywood star?
anyways, just my 2-cents....oh yeah, I pick Arnold, because McGrath has yet to start his career in the pro's (figuratively speaking)

I like Arnolds physique more from a pure physique standpoint. But this isnt a fair comparison to begin with. Too many devout Arnold followers who will be bias to begin with (Me included) but McGrath is very impressive. Its like comparing the Cincinnati Bengals who have been good for only a couple years now lately with the New England Patriots who have won 3 out of 5 Super Bowls.
Hope to see McGrath on stage again in 07.

We are talking the victory pose Matt. Take a look at it. It doesn't work well for Frank. Or Lee Priest for that matter.

Doesn't this go to show how underrated Frank is? If I made a post comparing Gustavo Badell to Arnold, I don't think there would be as much debate. Most would say Arnold and leave it at that. But with Frank, it's interesting to see that the crowd is divided. I think they both look excellent, but Frank has a much trimmer waist and more dramatic taper than Arnold, not to mention better arms. Upper arms may be comparable somewhat, but forearms are not even close.
This debate does not really show how good Frank is imo. These pics of Arnold are from 30 plus years ago. I would wager if Arnold was 26 years old today in 2006, he would blow frank out of the water. Frank is not every impressive with the exception of his waist and forarms.

I'm not a fan of Arnold, but Frank's dainty midsection and dainty everything -- other than arms, is not for me.
So I'd have to go with Arnold.

I prefer Frank's physique. SOmething's weird about Arnold's body. Arnold is always the man though gotta love him he's a legend among legends.
