I've been taking sleep formula pills for 7-8 years now. For the past year or so, I've taken them at least once a week.
If I stop taking them, will I go through withdrawal?
-
What kind are they?

I assume it's an herbal formula; there are typically less withdrawal symptoms in comparison to prescription drugs.
Try to go without it for a few nights, and if you notice any overt differences, set up an appointment with your doctor.

I can sleep just fine without it, it's just that once a week, I have to take it.
I remember 3 years ago, there were weeks where I took it 4-6 nights. I think I've gotten better.

One night a week. What do you think I mean?

I don't know. One night a week, I just have trouble sleeping.
Other than that, I sleep alright.

Is it the same night of the week usually, that you find yourself taking it?

No?

you're fucked.
-
No?
So occassionally you feel a little too amped-up or whatever to fall asleep and you take a vegetable-based pill (i believe it is). No, it doesnt seem like it should be a problem to stop. You're a damn choirboy, ffs. Really.
;D

But shouldn't I be able to sleep well every night of a week?

Yes, you should.
Do you drink coffee or tea, etc?

I drink two sodas a day.
Do I have insomnia?

When you have trouble sleeping, yes. Nothing else to call it.
Since you arent using a sleep-aid every night, though, you are way ahead of things.
Cutting down/out caffeine is normally the first step, since the shit accumulates. But it sounds like you have that under control. If you reduced to one soda, though, you will be surprised what a difference that can make. The only problem is that it sounds like your issue is random within the week, so you need to know how to target that day/night.

So, it's not a HUGE deal? It's mild insomnia?
I'm better off than my older sister, who I'm told takes Unisom every night. Or my aunt, who takes Ambien.

It only becomes a huge deal if you turn it into one. Lots of people have serious problems w sleep, and would trade places with you without a moment of hesitation...so you need to put things into proper perspective. Going to bed to give yourself say 9 hours rest will allow an extra hour for peace of mind. That will ease you if you're worried about getting 8 hours sleep, so it's a good routine to have.

What do you mean trade places with me?
I've tried exercising, and I still have some troubles.
-
And Unisom is diphenhydramine hydrochloride (pretty sure), which is an anti-histimine (sp?) and isnt supposed to be addictive. Chances are very good that it's much stronger and a bigger problem than what you're taking, so thats one way of putting it into perspective.

I mean they'd trade problems w you, because they know it would be easy to beat.

Easier to beat than what they have, in other words.

Yes. You seem to have kept yourself from getting carried away (against someone taking unisom, or certainly ambien), so you apparently have some compass that keeps you out of trouble. Best advice to you is to NEVER lose that feature of yourself.
-
This problem should be easily fixed, I guess.

pretty sure i am. i don't think i'm technically addicted, just totally restless without them and take forever to fall asleep. my mind just doesn't turn off. ill pop 40 mg of melatonin or a benadryl (sometimes two) before bed. the only nights i don't take anything are nights i don't need to be up the next day. doesn't help that some days i have to be up at 6 or 7am but on my free nights i like to stay up til 3 am. really fucks with my internal clock.

Sounds like I'm not as bad as you.
Sorry if that's insensitive.

im not exactly worried about it.. lol
-
Will I suffer withdrawals?
I'm just worried I'll suffer rebound insomnia or have to go to rehab.
-
i had a friend who got addicted to this natural, herbal supplement too. The withdrawal symptoms were so severe that people genuinely thought he was possessed. He ended up getting sectioned for 3 weeks in a mental health clinic. Last i heard, he was back on them again.
Are you making fun of me?
-
what? no of course not. I'm being serious. I myself take diphenhydramine most nights.
Are you really being serious?
-
yes. people take "herbal" supplements all the time because they are led to believe they are safer, when in actual fact they are often incredibly strong and a lot more addictive than the tried and tested brands. opium is natural, cannabis is natural...these things can have very strong sides. I'd personally never touch them.
Did you friend really get put in a mental hospital?
-
Should I get off them?
-
I did some research, and it says that often, people who take OTC sleep aids experience side effects like nausea and constipation. I've never experienced that with the stuff I take.
I've also never had to increase my dose.
-
But shouldn't I be able to sleep well every night of a week?
Not necessarily. What's to insure you are actually tired enough to fall and stay asleep? On those nights when you can't sleep, don't fight it. Get up and do something. The worst thing you can do when you can't seem to fall asleep is to fight it.
Taking a sleep aide once a week, is not an addiction. There is no physical reason you'd have withdrawals if you stopped.

I also rarely have trouble sleeping two or more nights in a row.

You have a problem. Bah!
-
Sorry to bump, but I think the problem is I worry I won't sleep at all if I'm not asleep in 20-30 minutes, so I take one.
-
Get some kava capsules from Maui Medicinals. No narcotic or addictive. Take (3) on an empty stomach 15min before bedtime & its nighty-night. No hangover, deep REM sleep.

Pure poison. No wonder you're having a hard time getting off it. Be careful mate.
Are you being serious, or messing with me?
-
Most insomnia has psychiatric elements so regardless what someone uses your only treating the symptoms. Zoloft has helped me sleep better than I ever have before.

But like I said, I sleep fine the other six nights when I don't take it.
Maybe it's because I just panic if I'm not asleep in 15-20 minutes.
It's possible I don't have a sleeping problem, and it just takes me longer to fall asleep some nights than others.
-
I did it! I slept well every night last week without the sleep formula pills. And I didn't go through withdrawal or rebound insomnia.
I guess I'm not dependent on them after all.
-
Honestly, do not just come off them without the help of a doctor. People have died doing this.
Agreed. At the very least, you can expect to feel like shit if you quit these types of drugs cold turkey.
-
great to know you can always get truthful replies to one's questions here, this thread being a prime example of just that...

I can't even take Benadryl. I hate that hangover too much.
