Title: New Years Eve. Most overrated night of the year?
Post by: Costanza on December 29, 2013, 10:57:04 PM
Not long to go, how do you guys feel about the night?
I've always thought it was massively overrated. People getting drunker than on a typical night out, entry to events/clubs/parties costs 3 times as much as it normally would, singles are made to feel even lonelier than usual (won't apply to Getbiggers as they'll be making out with their 10/10s) and possibly the worst, having to listen to people's 'new year's resolutions'.

I have never felt anything special about new years. Its just a change in some numbers.

Then all these dumb shits start to make new years resolutions and quit about 3 weeks in.

Thankfully it's not required, they must make a killing off lonely guys on the night.

Depends on what you do...

I found that spending it with good friends in a smaller atmosphere was more enjoyable than the crazy parties in the past.  With younger kids, it is different, as being here in the West Coast, it is more fun to celebrate with them at 9pm (midnight in New York, and we can watch that on cable).   As for the Rose Parade, we watch it on our couch, with blankets, and hot chocolate (or coffee for me). That will be our New Year's this time, and I am happy with that.

Now, we have done a lot of various things on New Years.

Fraternity parties that usually ended with someone way too drunk (quite a few years).
Disneyland at midnight (actually a lot of fun with our group)
Helping work on the Burbank float for the Rose Parade (they move it at 1am or so from Burbank to Pasadena)
Stayed at the Rose Parade (you can see many of the floats from 10pm on in Pasadena on the streets).
Celebrated at a cool restaurant / dance club (a few times)
Went to Vegas, watched a concert, and was in the craziness at midnight when all people go nuts at midnight.

I'd have to agree with spending it with a small number of your close friends at someone's place, chilled, fun environment.

Spending it with family and close friends is always the most meaningful way.

I donno I loved it when I drank, was a perfect excuse to be a douche, however it's completely uninteresting now that I've stopped drinking.

Well personally I love New Years, but only reason is I can watch the Sydney Harbour fireworks from a family members apartment on the harbour, rather than battling it out with on average 1.5 million people cramming themselves into the harbour trying to get a good spot.

But if I didn't have that, yeah would seem overrated.

I feel the same. I have always done nothing or just something low key on this day. Too many fools and too many cops out.

Might spend it alone like I have done most of the years...

Its easy for me to interact with people on the street, gym, library, grosserystore, clubs...but going to a party. Cant really remember the last time. U need to be positive and talk, it can be pretty damn hard sometimes, most of the times...specially to average people who is quite normal and act normal. People like that never intrest me...

Musicians LOVE New Years eve.  You make double or triple.  Everyone in the crowd is dressed nice and good tippers.  Traffic sucks bigtime, police everywhere, but it's a good night.

People are happy on new years.  Optimistic.  Excited.  It's a solid night.

Finally I don't need to be bashful about wanting to have a beer at 10 am. It's all fair on January 31st.

I'll be cracking my first one with breakfast. Nice.

Baked a Pavlova last night and left it in the oven as you can't open the oven until it's completely cold.  Anyway woke up early this morning and opened the oven to take out my Pav and it's getting eaten by sugar ants.   :'(  So my friend won't be getting her Pav that I am suppose to take to her place for her party tonight.
