2014: Crimea is annexed by Russia and by popular vote becomes integral part of Russian Federation. This marks the first time Russian territory expands since the Tsars
2015: Putin declares straight military intervention in Syria, deploying Russian air force and navy in assistance to advisers whom have been deployed in assistance to Syrian government from beginning of conflict
